It's a lovely old hotel that provides a break from chains. A couple of small parlor like rooms in the hotel are nice for people watching. And the breakfast is more complete than the continental breakfast indicates (eggs, sausage, pastries, waffles, yogurt, cereal, oatmeal, toast--all self serve). There is a nice outdoor patio for sitting in the sun. They have coffee and tea out all day and put out the coffee at 6:30 in the morning on each floor. For an old hotel, they have lots of outlets. The location is great, right next to Rocky Mountain Chocolate factory.
We had an exterior room. It did not have a room darkening shade and our room was quite light all night. The closet is in the corner and difficult to access. There is no access to fridge or microwave, which we've grown used to having for our restaurant leftovers. The coffee was not very hot--it sits out in the coffee urn and cools off quickly and without any microwave we couldn't reheat it. The carpet in the rooms is in bad shape. It seemed cleaned but it's stained and dark and just detracts from the room quality.

Nice old hotel. The lobby is full of charm and the veranda is nice to take breakfast or have an afternoon coffee and cookie ( all complimentary). The beds were confortable and the bathroom was nice. Durango is a charming, albeit touristic, city where one can actually wander by feet and eat on nice terrasses in the summer.
We had a family suite with two rooms and a smallish saloon. It is in the 'palace wing' ie the annex. Even though it is just across the parking lot and just as old. It doesn't have the charm of the main building. You just enter straight on a staircase (with no lift). To improve things we would always come back through the main lobby and through the back entrance on the parking lot, which goes through a nice terrace and has a lot more charm. Some windows give in a roof with the air con installations which lack a bit if charm, though beyond you see the mountains. Another point of attention is that it is next to the station if the Durango Silverton, which whistle from 7:45 in the morning. It is not horrible but this is not a quiet as it could be.

Staff was great. Little touches were appreciated like the cookies and the coffee availability. Ceiling fan in our room was nice for circulation (otherwise could have been a little stuffy in an interior room with no external window)
We had one of the rooms that had a little stained glass window above the door. The light from the hallway shone through all night so the room was never completely dark (which is something I personally need to sleep well). Not a deal breaker but if I come back I would ask to have a different room. Also it could be a bit loud at times in the morning when the staff brought up the coffee to the second floor.

We absolutely loved our stay at the hotel! The breakfast was fantastic, having fresh local coffee and tea at all hours was a bonus too. We loved the atmosphere and how unique the hotel was, it was refreshing to have character in a hotel rather than the same modern layouts and decor. Having the hotel right next to the train was perfect, and we were right down the block from tons of shops and restaurants, we didn't need our car the entire weekend! Would definitely book again!

Beautifully restored Victorian hotel at the south end of town. Beautiful furniture and lamps throughout, and a really cool old elevator. Excellent location to walk to just about all there is to see in the downtown Durango. Very very clean! Unlike other restored hotels we've stayed in, water, electricity and wifi access was excellent and the solid construction of the structure made the room super quiet. Hot breakfast was included which was a definite plus. And parking available! We loved it!
Would've loved to have had a small frig and microwave in the room, but they had a tea station right outside our room, although no coffee - had to go downstairs for coffee.

I have always stayed at a different historical hotel in Durango. This was my first time at The General Palmer. I was in room 306. I did not realize there was a balcony that overlooks the train. This was such a treat. I was able to video the train leaving the station from the balcony. The decor is a step back in time and so tasteful. I love that coffee is always available, with real china cups. I also love the porch with seating for relaxing. This would be a perfect place to stay for several days. The shower was hot and the bed so comfortable.
The elevator is difficult. I have severe arthritis in my hands, but it would not deter me from staying again. Also, I did not sleep well. In Room 306 there is constant sound that I could not figure out. Next time I will bring a sound machine to try to drown it out. The machine will be handy also because of the hotel's location on a very busy corner, loud partying outside until late.

Beautiful, very clean, well kept, great Durango location, great staff, lots of available self serve coffee, tea, water, hot water, easy to use ac, decorations to fit the design, easy parking, plenty of beautiful sitting and relaxing spaces. Lots of windows
Not much light in parking lot Stairs were not easy to manage with luggage Elevator was a little tricky and small to manage but gorgeous Did not see a ramp to roll your suitcase up into the lobby (may have just missed it)

The location is great, especially if wanting to take the Durango to Silverton steam train. Parking is good. The check in staff, particularly Oksana were extremely friendly and helpful. The antique feel is quirky. The bed was very comfortable and good pillows.
The bathroom/wc was a little cosy. The breakfast room does not have enough tables for guests and it is first come first served. You may be left standing or looking for a seat without a table..The breakfast itself could have more variety.

Staff was friendly when we arrived, they even offered if we needed help with our luggage. Breakfast was delicious and worked with my time by starting at 7am. The location was very good for me, as I was going on the train the next morning. I was able to find my train parking which happened to be behind the McDonald's near the hotel and near the train station for easy access. My children also enjoyed the hotel calling it "The Fancy Hotel".

I loved the effort made to keep this an authentic hotel of the 1890s. The furnishings and woodwork were beautiful. The bedroom had a very generous size,
The authentic elevator was difficult to use, particularly with luggage. I found out on arrival that I had an interior room with no windows. I had a choice between it and a room in another building with no elevator. The interior room turned out to be OK, but I wish the description of the rooms when you are making the reservation was more clear and fully disclosed the choices.
