San Anselmo is a wonderful small hotel set in its own orange gardens at the top of the Aventine hill. It is a peaceful retreat away from the noise of the city but only a short walk to the main ancient ruins, the Tiber and some of Rome's principal piazzas. The park-like Aventine has its own unique attractions, as well as number of restaurants and shops. within easy walking distance. Public transport is also accessible nearby. My room was huge and beautifully appointed with a terrace surrounded by orange trees. Among the hotel's public spaces, many of which open out into the gardens, are an elegant sunny breakfast room where a lavish breakfast is served, a number of small bar areas and a wonderful wood-paneled library. The garden itself contains clusters of benches, tables and chairs. Everything seems beautifully designed to make guests feel welcome, comfortable and exceptionally well attended to. But this atmosphere is also in large part due to the wonderful staff who were always gracious, informative, and ready to help with anything.

The location is close to the Circo Massimo and the Colosseum, as well as a quiet neighborhood. Another fun fact is that it is located right next to the door where you can look through the famous keyhole to get a view of the Vatican. It also is close to a beautiful park with a full view of Rome from above. The location was a great way to start discovering Rome. I booked the place not having a high expectation apart from the convenient location. Still, not only was the location a perfect fit for touring Rome the hotel itself was very beautiful. Each room is decorated uniquely. We stayed in the 'written room' and had poetry written on the walls. The bathroom was spacious and well decorated, and the room was spacious with big windows for good lighting. I never write a review, but this was an exceptional experience I thought I would leave a recommendation!

The hotel is located in a quieter - yet walkably close to the main tourist sights, area of Rome. It was also very close to the culinary district Testaccio. Front desk staff helped us out with everything from hard-to-get dinner reservations and airport transfers. The building has maintained a comfortable yet elegant decor, and the breakfast spread was fantastic.

Due to an administrative error I was upgraded to a luxurious room with a remarkable sunken bath in a room that felt like a spa in a resort. Beautiful grounds in a leafy area a bit removed from the chaos of Rome but just a five minute (steepish hill) stroll to a transport/dining hub. Very pretty hotel overall. Just large enough to have all the services one might need, yet small enough to be intimate. The fin de siecle Liberty style is fresh and fun-- somewhere bettween deco and rococo.

A bit of chaos on check-in, as they had given my room to someone else by accident. However, they ultimately remedied the situation by giving me a free up-grade to a more luxurious category of room. The breakfast is elegantly laid out, but the juices and meats were not the finest.

Absolutely amaizing hotel. The room was amaizing, it is so authentic and you can feel real Italy here. The staff are outstanding, 5 stars service! Location is amaizing too, just 20 minutes walk from famous spots.

It was perfect, nothing to complaint about

This hotel did not disappoint. Evertything was as advertised. Staff were very helpful and attentive. Room was comfortable. The Aventino neighborhood in which it is located is lovely. Can walk to Circus Maximus and the Coliseum. ,

Other attractions like Vatican City are more difficult to reach. There is a bus, however, that can take you there in about 1/2 hour.

Excellent location in Rome - we stayed at this hotel 21 years ago for our honeymon and loved it so much we brought our kids here. The hotel has been updated and it is very tastefully done and the location is excellent.

The only thing I didn't like is that we were only there for one night - should have booked more time but we were flying out after 10 days in Italy.

The hotel was beautiful. A stunning building with tasteful, in character furnishings. High ceilings and marble finishes throughout.

The breakfast was a continental offering, which was perfectly adequate. however I do prefer a hot breakfast.

The staff were friendly and helpful. There was a good choice at breakfast. It wasn’t right in the centre of Rome but it was only 10-15 minute walk.

I was on the first floor and at times it was a little noisy.

Hotel San Anselmo is a wonderful place to stay for visitors to Rome. The hotel's rooms are comfortable and nicely furnished. Breakfast is served in a beautiful quiet and shady garden by a highly professional staff. The desk staff is willing to oblige guest's requests with good advice. The Aventine hill is a good staging area as it is close to many bus and metro lines but it requires a walk up and down the hill. It is easy to get everywhere, but quiet, leafy, and far from the frenzy of tourism. There are several fascinating historic sites within a few minutes' walk of the hotel. At the end of a long day in madcap Rome, Hotel San Anselmo is a peaceful place to relax.

The marble bathroom floors get mighty slippery!
