Wasnt sure what to expect but it was really lovely. Beds were super comfortable; clean; bathroom perhaps a little tight but was fresh, and perfectly adequate. Location was great for waterfront walks a couple of streets away. Didn't dine in the restaurant downstairs but found an amazing Indian Restaurant down the street (Arranged Marriage). Small sitting area available for reading and relaxing was a nice idea. Would definitely stay again. NB - Stairs and Drop off / parking spot could be a challenge for mobility impaired. Appreciated parking being available.

Parking was available but @ 50m up the street past the hotel + drop off option was a little challenging for luggage. Security was present over the car park, but is street side. Small walk down the street with our luggage - not a problem for us, but for some could have been a wee challenge for someone mobility impaired or with a lot of luggage they didn't want to leave in the car. Would not put me off staying again, as will know what to expect.

We really like this place. First of all, communication is very smoothly and helpful. Secondly, friendly to “I” type people, as you can help yourself with all the process just follow the information through the email and message. Honestly, I would like to book again if I plan to visit New Plymouth next time. The lounge room, the whole hotel more like an art gallery, you can see a lot of artworks including some Chinese paintings, sculptures. Room is not very big but with everything you needed, it’s tidy and clean, showers are brand new, I believe they maintain the facilities well. We did not get a chance to try the restaurant as we arrive on 24th, Christmas Eve, while all the restaurants are closed on Xmas. But when we passing the bar, it seems very good, maybe we can have a try next time. The location of the hotel is really really really convenient!!! Close to all the places, the KFC, PNS, light show park, art gallery.

Honestly, everything is good!

Everything was of a high standard and the room and bed were very comfortable. Luke, Ellie and all the other staff were very friendly and helpful over our two day stay, for example helping us with our laundry in the guest laundry room (a very useful resource for travelers like ourselves!) We definitely recommend staying at the State Hotel.

Breakfast discount was available at Joes Garage which is basically a pub restaurant below the hotel on street level. This option didn’t appeal to us but there are plenty of other places nearby so it isn’t really a problem.

The State Hotel is lovely and everything I expected. As I was only going to be in New Plymouth for around 12 hours total (unfortunately, it was just a transit stop for me) I booked the most compact room which was fine for me as a solo traveller. The vibe and decor of the hotel is beautiful. The guest lounge is a lovely addition, as is the streaming jazz music. The personal welcome note and whittakers chocolate (my favourite) a great touch. I had a nice chat with the manager Luke which really made me feel welcome, and he helped me with airport transfer info. The room itself is nicely appointed, clean and well maintained - just like the photos. The location is central near shops and restaurants. I would definitely recommend to other travellers and my only regret was that I did not stay longer!

Just 2 suggestions: the noise from some cars hooning past the hotel (Friday night) was pretty obtrusive, so if the owner is looking to improve in future I think that double glazing would be a good idea. Also, there was nowhere to put my toiletry bag (there are 2 shelves in the bathroom but they're used for towels and supplied toiletries etc.) Perhaps a third shelf or similar.

Changed my booking from another hotel to The State Hotel based on the Lonely Planet recommendation and I am so glad I did! The attention to detail (guest lounge, music throughout the property, little sweets on check in), cleanliness, style and overall vibe are amazing! I called last minute to request an early check-in and was very happy to learn that my room was ready (usually unheard of)! I had a great stay and will definitely recommend to others.

Everything was great.

Nice room, small but comfortable for one. Quiet, could hear people talking in the hall but that was it. Double glazing on the windows blocks any noise from the KFC across the street and Joe's Garage bar/restaurant at street level. Good blackout blinds. Plenty of cafes and great restaurants with easy walking distance. Midway between Coastal Walkway and Pukekura Park. 25 minute walk or short drive to fantastic East End beach. Neighbourhood felt safe. Easy parking.

Windows only open a hand's-width at the bottom, not at all on top. Had to rely on the heat pump to cool the room in early evening. Sink is tiny, no soap dish. No towel racks, just a knob on the back of the bathroom door.

Love the detail in the design and decor. The aesthetics and functionality for such small spaces was well thought out. It was very centralised and the parking was great considering it was in the middle of town.

Toiletries were a bit thin, but really wasn’t a huge deal other than the fact that I forgot my lotion. I was initially hesitant because the total ammenities were minimal compared to other places, but it’s well worth the ambience and location and staff friendliness.

Great boutique hotel, well designed and lovely old style features. Good that it has the additional shared living area. Convenient location, easy to come and go and parking was available. The staff were excellent, very friendly and helpful.

We had a room with a double bed and they did advise that they recommend these rooms for single occupants, so it was quite small, but we were prefectly happy.

We often visit Taranaki as we once lived there, and I love the atmosphere and vibe. We only stayed one night but I wish it had been more. The State was in a perfect location in the middle of great food options, near the seaside and close to shops. The room was lovely with a lounge on the same floor to sit and read, play music, or just chill. The bathroom was small however the shower was awesome! I would stay again and plan to.

nothing was perfect.

An exquisite property with great attention to detail and decor. they truly have gone above and beyond

the room was exceptionally small, an oversized person would not be able to utilise the bathroom. There was a speaker located adjacent to the room door playing music which I could hear all night. to match the exceptional decor an investment into some better more comfortable pillows would be worthwhile to ensure guests get a better night sleep. other than that thank you for the wonderful stay.
