This small hotel is located in a fully renovated building. This building has always been an inn for centuries. The owners managed to get modern comfort like shower, toilet and even USB charging in the rooms and yet keep the authenticity of the building. It is a pub as well, and they serve excellent meals. The garden is beautiful and it is lovely to sit in there with a drink, enjoying the moment. Personell is very, very friendly and make you feel very much at home. The location is beautiful in one of the most characteristic villages of Kent. The landlady offered good advice for visiting some lesser known gardens and always had a friendly word.

In order to get a shower and toilet in the room, these were a bit small.

For a place to stay, our room was well designed and comfortable with a comfortable bed and many plugs and storage. The plugs, some with USB, made charging mobiles etc very easy. There was good hanging for clothing and drawers for clothes. The en-suite had a good shower. The food was excellent both for dinner and breakfast and the staff were all friendly. Although we were not local customers in the bar were friendly. There was very good WiFi which is always a benefit. We would stay there again!

The nice bathroom in general would have been a bit tight for a larger person, but this was not a problem to us. The stairs to the room are quite tight and steep, which was not a problem to us but could be for some.

Staff were very attentive, and the food was great. The room was well decorated, and the bed was super comfy. We spent the afternoon in the sunshine drinking cider in the well maintained and beautiful garden overlooking the pond. In the evening, we ate a fabulous meal and had a lovely walk around the local area, which was full of chocolate box cottages, beautiful gardens, and a stunning church. All this was then topped off by a very peaceful and undisturbed sleep. Perfect.

Room was perfect for our needs. Clean and really nicely furnished. Meals were very good and good value. Breakfasts were delicious with a good choice of cereals, fruit and hot food Impressed with the lovely proprietor, she made us feel welcome and nothing was too much trouble. Well done to the staff who worked hard to ensure we were served promptly. We would recommend this family run hotel.

This is such a lovely place. We have stayed here 4-5 times now since discovering it about 7 years ago. It’s our little safe place to escape to whenever need a little break. The staff are welcoming and friendly. The rooms are full of character and charm. The food is first class. Lovely beer garden. Plenty of parking. Very peaceful place in Smarden which is a lovely village. Close to other parts of Kent which are worth a visit too.

We booked in and found that we had booked for the wrong day and weren’t expected but the owners were so helpful and made up the room and even made me a coffee while we waited. The room was lovely with a big old fashion four poster bed which was very comfortable but the bathroom was very modern and clean. The breakfast was really good and all freshly cooked. Overall a lovely stay and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it.

The rooms where quaint, quirky and absolutely steeped in history, we had the garden room, complete with four poster bed, which I expected to have doors opening out into the communal garden but no we had a secluded garden all to ourselves, gorgeous as Gwen loves her gardens. The bathroom was fitted with walkin shower and was of a very high standard. The food was beyond delicious and would be deserving of any michelin star. Very reasonable prices, would definately stay here again.

lovely old Inn with a stunning garden at the back. Olde Worlde en-suite room with lots of charming character. We enjoyed a Sunday roast and breakfast was exactly what we wanted. we had plenty of tea and coffee with fresh fruit, cereals and of course a full English breakfast. Smarden is quiet and very pretty - we enjoyed our stay very much. Parking is at the rear.

can’t think of anything!

AMAZING ***** took my boyfriend to the Chequers for a 2 night stay for his birthday treat and it did not disappoint. Everything was amazing from the minute we walked through the door. Staff were very welcoming and very attentive. We had 2 breakfasts and 2 dinners in the restaurant and all were excellent. Staying in the room with the brass bath was a beautiful extra touch. Praise to the whole team at the Chequers who do an excellent job, especially in the times we are living. Keep doing what you are doing because it clearly works. THANK YOU xx
