Breakfast very good and variety of food on offer. The evening food also good and service also. Nice bar and atmosphere. Staff very friendly and well stocked bar.

We stayed Saturday and Sunday evening. However, on Sunday our beds were made and towels changed, tea bags cups etc renewed, but the bathroom was not cleaned and no bottled water renewed. Was this because it was Sunday? It’s convenient place to stay for our family, it’s a lot of character but also a little too old fashioned maybe, far too many cushions in the room and on the bed, maybe needs freshening a little.

The character, garden, courtyard, amiable staff, decor, room layout and facilities

Some room lights didn't work, no bottled waters in my parents room, although an accessible room was booked for my parents, and Sunday lunch and breakfasts were booked, there were so many stairs, some very steep, and differing levels, and not one ramp, that we had to be seated in the bar instead each time,, and couldn't enjoy the restaurant, the building, or some of the grounds. The staff tried their best to be accommodating, and half of the building is very old so some inaccessible areas to be expected.

general ambiance, furnishings, size, amenities; eating areas and food to be able to control own heating arrangement.

lights on fire censors on ceilings + emergency lighting facilities also on ceilings above beds that glowed brightly all night. Having to reach behind table lamp for bathroom switch. In coming light round sky light. Good supply of soaps etc. but no flannels. Bare wooden floors particularly when get out of beds, since no complimentary slippers were provided. Position of radio, good to provide but taking up too large an amount of the bedside table. Hangers you have un-hook- tedious.

The warm welcome and way in which we were looked after really made the stay. The staff without exception are clearly a happy team, the importance of which cannot be underestimated. A range of local ales and good food makes for enjoyable evenings; one MUST on the menu is the tasting platter of 6 or 7 Stilton cheeses from around the permitted 3 counties. The next morning a decent full English breakfast will start off the day, after which a relax in the small sitting room adjacent to the restaurant to read the history of the pub and its role in promoting the World's greatest cheese. I trust I will be forgiven here for also giving a plug to the good pub across the road, "The Talbot Inn," which provided a change for an evening with well-kept beer and the greatest value rump steaks we've had for a while.

Not intended as a negative comment, but was slightly disappointed that the main restaurant was not open during midweek, which covered our stay, and evening meals served downstairs off the bar area. I can understand the reasons for this, but had been looking forward to it from our last visit some 26 years previously. However the breakfast was in this fine old room which made up for it somewhat.

Delightful - it felt a very loved building - staff were very pleasant too Excellent breakfast

Disappointing evening meal. What we had was pleasant and well cooked but it was difficult to find anything to order that excited us. All seemed too hearty for our taste. Quite an old fashioned menu dominated by roasts and pretty standard fare . I’m pescatarian but don’t want a calorific fish and chips though I’m sure many people would love it. A restructuring of the menu to include inspired vegetarian options would bring people into the restaurant. We chose the hotel because the food shown on the website looked more fine dining and we hoped there was a young inventive chef in the kitchen. We’d def stay here again, lovely hotel, but sadly would find somewhere else for dinner unless there were greater choices.

Well, where to start. We had excellent service even before we arrived, being transferred to a quieter room to avoid the potential disturbance from a wedding party. The room was superb in all respects, even down to the dressing gowns provided in the wardrobe, the water bottles by the bed, the coffee maker - every aspect was good. The evening meal was very good, even down to the waitress approaching us with gluten free options, having informed them when we initially booked that my wife needs gluten free food. And the breakfast was off the scale - an amazing granola made in-house by the chef, (a recipe for which I was given on request) yoghurt, croissant, fresh fruit, fruit juices, coffee, toast - and that was just the continental board. The full English for my wife was also excellent.

Absolutely nothing.

Beautiful, large, room - with original period features. Classical music playing on arrival was a nice touch. Complementaries were above and beyond price of room; different coffees, chocolates, teas etc to cater to all. The reception, hospitality, and cleaning staff were all delightful, friendly, and helpful; clearly a good working environment for staff. Breakfast was lovely and the bar and restaurant very nice.

Perhaps a few more comfy seats in the 'bistro' area would be nice, little to distinguish it from the pub/restaurant. But other than that it was lovely, the staff were really nice and knew their stuff.

Beautiful old building with modern facilities. Our room had a four poster super comfortable bed. We had everything we could have needed - except a hairdryer. We asked for a non dog friendly room and I think we may have been slightly upgraded to accommodate our request. Fantastic breakfast.

We didn't have a hairdryer. The bistro restaurant is a little soulless but the bar is fine. The morning breakfast room is their main restaurant and it's lovely
