My stay at the Hotel Californian was excellent. The hotel is right in the center of Santa Barbara, so it's easy to go shopping or see the sights. The hotel looks really nice, with a mix of old and new styles. My room was very clean, cozy, and had everything I needed. Every little detail made me feel special and comfortable. The staff were very friendly and helpful. They always made sure I was okay and helped me with anything I needed. They were very kind and made me feel welcome. In short, my stay at Hotel Californian was a great experience. I recommend it to everyone visiting Santa Barbara.

Location is excellent, near the beach and a number of great restaurants nearby. Room service food was the best I've ever had! The rooftop pool and hottub were amazing. We spent most of our time there and loved every minute of it! Our room was spacious and very quiet.
Our room had minor damage on the furniture and cabinets, like a dog had chewed on things and they hadn't been fixed. The beds were too soft for our taste, but that seems to be a luxury thing in most hotels. The hotel is REALLY expensive and there is no option for parking except valet which was more $ than advertised.

Differing venues were available for breakfast which if you hadn’t booked in advance you would queue with non-residents to secure a table which I found slightly surprising giving the room rate.
Clearer guidance on arrival - Reception seemed to be keener on explaining the charge to be taken from my card for additional charges rather than taking time to explain the facilities and options for dining, bar and breakfast. A simple map would be useful given the hotel is multi-site.

Our suite was impeccably clean, spacious, furnished beautifully. We had a view that overlooked the ocean and it was an great space to hangout in.
The pool experience needs improvement. The water in the pool is cold. For a luxury hotel this should be heated to a warm temperature. The hot tub was cold too. Service on the rooftop was terrible. No one greeted us and no one asked us if we ever needed any drinks or food. Anytime I needed to order something I literally had to get up and walk over to the waiter or waitress. Once I did receive my order it was wrong and they forgot a few things that never arrived. I also asked for water 3 times and finally gave up. Disappointed in the pool experience and there is much room for improvement.

My second time staying at this hotel and I love the design and location. The rooftop pool is something I looked forward to returning to after my first visit, and it did not disappoint.
Expected bathrobes in the closets. I also enjoyed the (lower-tier) room on my last visit more than this one with the fireplace b/c the views weren't as good, and the fireplace wouldn't work.

We really enjoy mini-vacations to Santa Barbara and Hotel Californian has been on my list. Unfortunately, because of all of the choices in this area and for much better prices, I wouldn't come back. My biggest disappointment with this hotel is the pool area. It's across the street from the hotel, on the rooftop of a different building. My daughter and I were envisioning laying by the pool, ordering snacks, and just enjoying the ambiance, In reality, the pool is tiny and most of the chairs are not around the pool. There was no staff at the pool to help with umbrellas or to order drinks. For the price of a room at this hotel, I expected a much better pool experience. We didn't even stay by the pool, instead went to the beach.
