The food was next level- the dinner and breakfast were both absolutely delicious. The ambiance was great, the rooms were comfortable and the staff was extremely friendly and accommodating. Staying here was definitely a highlight of our trip to Japan

The bathrooms in the physical room could have been a bit bigger, or a least have a mirror outside the bathroom so it could have been easier to get ready in the morning- there was nowhere to place my stuff to get ready with.

We loved our stay in this beautiful and traditional ryokan. Our room was large and comfortable and the beds were great. The shared bath and showers worked very well. We didn’t ever have to wait for a shower and we were first in to the bath every day by booking it for 5pm. We loved wearing the Yukata to breakfast and also to the special dinner that we booked on our last night. The food at this dinner was great and we were lucky to sit at the counter with the chef cooking in front of us and at the end sharing his family history of the ryokan over seven generations. The Japanese breakfast, especially the rice porridge was amazing each morning. Location is brilliant in the old town and is very close to the railway station and restaurants and cafes. The staff are friendly and very helpful. We thoroughly recommend it.

Only problem was the prior guest had smoked in our toilet (against ryokan rules), but this meant our toilet smelt of smoke for much of our stay which was quite unpleasant.

The whole experience was incredible! Food, with dinner largely prepared in front of us, was exceptional in both taste and presentation, the room was spacious and comfortable, and the onsen bath with the amenities provided made the whole stay and experience unique and relaxing. If I wasn't interested in staying in other ryokan in the future, I would for sure book this one again for a stay in Kyoto.

Overall, I would recommend that anyone staying at this ryokan (or any ryokan really) temper their expectations for tatami mat bedding. My only gripe about this location was that the mat bedding was not quite as plush as I would have liked for having to sleep on the ground. Still, I think this place offers mattress bedding as well for folks interested, but I cannot speak to those rooms, and I do feel the floor mat bedding is part of the authentic traditional Japanese appeal.

The hospitality, service, and meals at IZUYASU highly exceeded our expectations! Holly was wonderful and kind, and we loved hearing from the chef/owner at dinner. We stayed at another ryokan during our 2 weeks in Japan in Hakone, and the food here was exceptional and especially compared to our other experience. It's your traditional kaiseki experience so you should have an open mind to trying new things and seeing what the chef has seasonally curated for you! The overall ryokan maintains some of the original, authenticity of the historical inn - while having some newer, nicer, modern upgrades. The only downside to staying here is scheduling the baths (toilets and sinks are in the rooms). Thankfully we had full exposure to these amenities during our stay as there were no other overnight guests, but I can imagine when the ryokan is fully booked this can be a bit frustrating as sometimes it's nice to not have everything so planned out when you're traveling and out and about exploring all day. I would still highly recommend this place if you are okay with that.

The hospitality of the entire staff was outstanding. Everyone spoke English and this made things so much easier for all of us. All of them were also willing to teach us Japanese phrases and learn English phrases from us. We really enjoyed speaking to the young lady who sounds like she just started working there and is learning to speak English. She was so friendly and hospitable and made us feel so welcome as did her counterpart, explaining all the different things we ate for our meal. The gentleman was so friendly, showing us our rooms, where the baths were, took our luggage to our rooms - EVERYONE was so wonderful!!! Thank you for a most enjoyable time.

Although we enjoyed the private bath at our designated time, it seemed like people who used the bath before us did not know how to use it - they left soap scum and little white things were on the sides and floating around when it was our bath time. It seems like the water automatically drains and fills up with fresh water, but the sides of the tub did not seem clean in between bathers.

This was our first stay at a ryokan and we thoroughly enjoyed it. The included traditional breakfast was excellent with a good variety of quality side dishes and fruit. It was probably the healthiest and tastiest breakfast we had our whole trip. We were also able to wear the provided yukata around the house which made for a really fun cultural experience. The service at breakfast and overall was 10/10. The baths in the ryokan were also such a good way to unwind after a long day of walking. There are 3 separate rooms (each with a bath), shared by all guests, and the staff accommodated for our bathing times very well, ensuring we had private access to a bath every night at the times we wanted. We also booked a traditional massage which was done over our clothes, and it was the perfect way to relax. The little touches like providing good quality coffee bags and traditional Japanese snacks, as well as tea when we arrived made us feel very warm and well looked after. The location was also a short 10 min walk from Kyoto station where all the hustle and bustle of night life is, and yet was also tucked away in a quiet and peaceful neighbourhood. It was also quite close to Nishiki markets and a short train ride to Fushimi Inari Taisha. This was the best place we stayed in our whole Japan trip and would definitely recommend it!

The 11pm curfew for returning to the ryokan was a little restrictive as we found ourselves rushing back on a few of the nights. It is understandable however why this is put in place as sound tends to travel in the house due to its traditional build and it prevents disturbing other guests. An unexpected plus was that it added a bit of structure to our day, ensuring we got back to the ryokan at a decent time to get enough sleep.

Spent a night here with my sister on our last day in Kyoto. Customer Service: They have both Japanese and English speaking staff (shout to Holy from England) who are all attentive and give the best service possible. Check-in: We went there early so we left our luggages with them and borrowed an umbrella (rainy weather) as we explored the surroundings. Actual check-in was great. Staff was there to greet us with tea and discuss our stay. We were able to book our bath session and massage during this. Check-out: Was a breeze, we left our luggages to be picked-up by LuggAgent for delivery to Osaka. We did not know that Izuyasu offered this service as well, unfortunately the LuggAgent booking was non-cancellable / nonrefundable. We would have preferred to avail the in-house service otherwise. Appreciated that the ryokan staff updated us when our luggages were picked up. Room: We stayed in the "Ki" room which meant "Happy", absolutely loved the room. Also, the Yukata and Pajama made the whole experience even more immersive. We used our Yukata during the Kaiseki Dinner and breakfast. HIGHLIGHT FOR US IS THE... Kaiseki Dinner: We were lucky enough to have the Dinner in the counter/dining area instead of our room, there were only six seats available. Dinner was absolutely delicious. The Sake recommended went well with the dishes served. There is a story re: the meals presented and since we were all english-speaking clients the dinner was explained by the English staff. BONUS: The chef preparing our dinner was the 7th generation owner of the Ryokan, there is a great story behind the history of Ryokan that will be shared by him at the end of the dinner. Loved his perspective of preserving heritage of the 180+yr old tradition of the their family as well as introducing new traditions. Thanks to everyone who made our experience wonderful!

Bath: Could have been hotter, not sure if they purposely controlled the temperature since we were foreigners. However, since we have experiences with hot springs/hot baths it was just not hot enough for us. Still worth a try though :)

This Ryokan was absolutely amazing... The staff were so friendly and helpful, especially Holly, who checked us in and looked after us during our stay. . The rooms were beautiful and huge, with pyjamas, yukata, and slippers provided. We were very comfortable. We booked the kaiseki dinner (a nice experience to go to dinner and breakfast in the yukata) and this was a definite highlight of our stay and of our trip. The food was delicious and the chef/owner, Yasujiro Izutsu, was very hospitable, even giving us a talk about the history of the ryokan afterwards (he is the 7th generation owner of this beautiful inn).

Stayed with a friend for one night, upon arrival staff was very attentive and spoke very good english! We we're the only guests that night, and so we had the leisure of freely using the baths which was heated when we requested it. I don't think the baths used natural spring water due to the location, but the experience was lovely nevertheless, and its nice that you can book it privately as well. The room and building itself is a authentic, renovated ryokan, and they provided all the amenities you could need, as well as local matcha tea and yukata. I felt the place was authentic, and is owned by a family and not a commercial business like some others. Location is perfect, very close to Kyoto station but not in the busy parts of town where it would be too noisy at night. The breakfast is amazing and lovingly cooked by a older lady - one of the best meals I had during my stay in Japan! And when we left we we're gifted a personal Furoshiki and seen off by the staff. Overall I would definitely recommend this place, especially as a introduction to Ryokans, and I'm excited to try more during my next visit to Japan. Thank you for the lovely stay!

Nothing!

Kaiseki dinner cooked by the owner-chef was the highlight of our trip. Host Holly (British lady who worked there for nearly 2 years) was a pleasant surprise - she's able to explain everything about our stay, answer our questions etc. in perfect Queen's English and Japanese mannerism.

It's a Ryokan so the building is a classic - some folks might not like it, but we thoroughly enjoyed it. Bath is from a large modern tub, so if you are expecting something traditional, look elsewhere
