Friendly hosts, nice common dining area, spacious yet compact, very new, nice eateries on the main street, lovely tub to soak in with bath salts provided.

Something to note and not a complaint. Laundry is a distance away because our room wasn't equipped washer or dryer. Traditional blinds do not block out sunlight well so an eye mask would be good for those who like to sleep in.

We are so happy that we chose to stay here! Echoing other reviews I will say this was one of our best stays during our two weeks in Japan. The room was so thoughtfully designed/decorated and the beds were super comfortable. Lots of storage, a desk, a cook top, coffee grinder, and local coffee provided. We liked having the tatami mat seating area/table as well. The staff went above and beyond to make sure we had everything we needed while we were there & they also helped us schedule a Yamato pickup for our luggage. Great location close to Gōjo metro station and walkable to a lot of other areas in Kyoto. Quiet location. The restaurant recommendations were great! Thank you!

Stay at this hotel if you are going to Kyoto!!! It will be one of the best decisions of your trip to Japan. My partner and I stayed here for a week and could not be happier. The staff are all wonderful and extremely helpful. They will go above and beyond to check in with you to make sure your stay is going well or to recommend places to visit in the city. They also helped us ship our luggage to Tokyo. The room is huge for any hotel room, but especially in Japan. It is extremely clean and beautifully designed. The beds are the most comfortable of all of the beds we slept in during our trip. There is a small kitchen and dining area and a great desk for working. The bathroom has laundry for long stays and a nice bathtub. The location is great! The hotel is on a small, quiet street close to all major landmarks, a Family Mart, and Kyoto station. We could walk to many places within 20 to 40 minutes. I have never given a perfect review to a hotel, but Tanakaya Kyoto Karasuma really deserves it!

Nothing that we can think of!

Very centrally located with 5+ min walk from Gojo Subway Station and a min walk from Karasuma Matsubara Bus Stop, which is very convenient no matter which part of Kyoto you’d like to visit. Besides, this is not just an affordable business hotel. While the building structure might be simple, the young owner really took his time to decorate rooms with real hints of Japanese craftsmanship (you’ll see when you stay). His staff are all very friendly and resourceful and genuinely demonstrate Omotenashi attitude and culture (and we are well travelled in Japan and are Japanese). One floor only has two rooms on each side of a hall way. Recommend for families.

Given its central location, you might notice the noise from streets (especially heavy trucks running on the main road only two blocks away).

After a huge day with the kids at Universal Studios Osaka and the subsequent trip from Osaka to Kyoto, I was feeling pretty tired when arriving at the hotel, as was the rest of the family. But from the moment we stepped inside, I felt looked after beyond belief from host Yoo ki ko. From the beautiful linen, towels, the amazing cleanliness and all the little extras like bath salts for a soak in the bath, it went well beyond my expectations. No other way to make a mum happier than the ability to have a soak in a proper Japanese style bath with beautiful salts after a big day. The hosts were amazing, went above and beyond to help in any way possible. and even helped us in the planning of our day trips. We had an early flight home and not only did they help book our taxi but made sure we were up early to not miss it and waved us goodbye at the front door. I have travelled the world and stayed in many hotels. This one was by far one of the most memorable. Would highly recommend.

Our stay at Tanakaya Kyoto Karasuma was a very special experience, the room was beautiful and allowed us to experience a functional Japanese living and sleeping room, this parallel to very comfortable beds. Besides the very positive reviews and the looks, we selected this hotel because vegan breakfast and dinner were offered; we had reserved one dinner and breakfast for every day, all the meals were served in our room in the Japanese living; it is not easy to put in words how delicious and delicate the meals were, we can just add a couple of pictures to show the presentation, and tell that these were one of our best vegan experiences in years. the team at the hotel was more than helpful, explaining every detail of the meal elements and offering good advice about vegan dinner options and sightseeing in the area. We can recommend staying at Tanakaya Kyoto Karasuma without any reservations; in a future stay in Kyoto, we will come back for sure to repeat the nice experience and to enjoy the vegan meal.

We had a most enjoyable and unforgettable stay at Tanakaya. The staff were friendly, attentive and very helpful. They made my kids feel special with gestures such as origami ninja stars and paper cutting decorations on our room door. There was a lot of attention paid to details such little vases of fresh flowers. The room was comfortable and cosy. The location was great! Lots of restaurants and shops and close to Gojo station. Our stay at Tanakaya was definitely the highlight of our time in Kyoto, which itself is an amazing city.

Nothing.

Cozy, nicely decorated Japanese style room had plenty of room for our family of 4. The kids enjoyed sleeping on futons in the tatami. It was nice to stay in a family run business. Tanaka-san and the staff were very helpful with advice and helping ship my luggage. Cannot comment on the catered meals offered except they were a bit pricey and we only ate out. Places to eat in the immediate area around the in were limited but if you walked 10-15 mins or cheap taxi to the train station or nishiki market there were many options.

Nothing.

I was travelling with my family a big group of 10! The host was very patient with our requests - kids + elders. They have also made great suggestions and recommendations for dining and tour transport options. The rooms were also extremely spacious which is important for me as I have 2 little ones in my room. Overall one of the better hotels I've stayed in Japan!

The rubbish bin in the hotel room is alittle small. However the host has no issue with us bringing them to reception for disposal. It might be the culture (I'm not too sure!)

First of all, the room was spotless clean, and I have high standards. It is designed in Japanese style, very authentic and beautiful. The bathroom is stocked with a high quality shampoo, conditioner, and body wash. The staff is very welcoming and helpful. The location is very good, too. There is a Family Mart store right around the corner- it's a two minute walk from the hotel. We bought water, ice-cream, snacks and breakfast essentials there. We used the washing machine twice, and it was very helpful, as the weather was hot and humid during our stay. We used the rack provided by the hotel to dry our clothes. Overall, we are very happy with our stay at Tanakaya Kyoto Karasuma. And highly recommend it!
