This friendly family run inn is very close to both the train/bus station and castle, as well as a wide variety of food restaurants bars and attractions. Check in was easy and they strive to provide English in written instructions and using their phone. The room was clean with a nice window and good bathroom. Breakfast was extensive with a variety of options and coffee always provided. It’s a great value for the location, room and breakfast.

Make sure to get to breakfast before 8:50 to get ample food (by 8 am is best). The room is very small, and the bed and covers really aren’t designed for two westerners (and we are not big by US standards). Mattress for us was hard. But honestly for three nights it was great given the price and other benefits.

The gentleman at the front was genuinely nice. The buffet breakfast was great. The gentleman was able to answer my questions regarding ingredients, which was very helpful for an individual with allergies/ intolerances. They had complimentary Japanese ceramic tortoise charms at the front. The location is close to the Castle and they were happy to look after our luggage after checking out. Our stay in Matsumoto was such a pleasant one. Also, I liked that they maintained the good old door lock and key. We would stay at Southern Cross Inn Matsumoto again.

The Southern Cross is perfectly located for sightseeing in Matsumoto. The staff are really helpful and it has nice touches like free coffee in reception 24/7, plus a couple of vending machines for soft drinks and beer. If you are travelling by car they have 4 parking spaces in a lot around the corner, available on a first come/first served basis, but there is also a paid parking lot almost opposite the hotel. There was a mix of Japanese and western food available for breakfast. The location is quiet but its only a five minute walk to the castle one way or the downtown area the other. It's an older hotel, but was spotlessly clean.

Matsumoto is not a large town so the hotel was within walking distance of most places. The castle is literally around the corner and is a fascinating place to visit. Breakfast was good. The stay was very good value for money. The twin room was very spacious (it may have been an upgrade). Fresh towels were provided every day.

Our group booked one twin room and one double room. The twin room was spacious but the double room was absolutely tiny and cramped.

The hotel was very affordable, and a short walk from Nakamachi-dori and Nawate-dori, and pretty close to Matsumoto Castle too, with local chicken dish specialty izakaya Ippo on the way there. I only used public transport once during my whole trip, other than that I walked everywhere. The hotel room was bigger than I thought, and pretty clean as far as I could tell. Even though we paid next to nothing for our stay here, a breakfast was included in the prize of our stay. There was free tea and coffee in the lounge too.

It was very nicely arranged. There was a good variety of foods. The dishes were sparkling clean.

I had never seen a hotel that did not offer on-site parking; that colored my experience. I was unable to locate the parking lot with the aid of the map I was given, & after driving around the neighborhood for awhile, finally returned to the hotel. I was very grateful that the desk clerk offered to accompany me in search of the parking lot, but next morning, when I handed the map to one of my passengers, & asked him to take us to the parking lot, he said, "This is not a map." I.e., no North, South, East & West were marked on it. It didn't work for him, either. As a lover of natural woods, I ached to see the counter under the miso serving utensils downing in standing water.

Location was awesome (walkable to the key attractions nearby). Price of the room was really good, especially when it includes breakfast. There is no doubt we will stay there again if we are back in the area.

Parking was not on-site. We paid 600yen (i think) for the parking but ended up parking at the wrong off-site location in the day which we paid additional. Got to read/analyse the car park directions they provide properly.

The hotel has a very convenient location, like 13 mins by walk from the JR station. There are convenience stores near, restaurants and the Matsumoto castle is also near. The staff did their best to kindly explain everything we needed to know during the check in and we found the room very spacious and clean. The breakfast was good with both western and eastern options.

super awesome location, for the price you cannot beat this place. the breakfast was great and included eggs, sausages, a few side dishes, some buns from a local bakery with butter and jam, soup, rice, coffee, tea, juices etc - super great value all together. only about 12 minutes walk from Matsumoto station and so close to the castle and shopping street.

The location of the hotel is within walking distance from the Matsumoto castle and all the major tourist attractions. The room was a bit on the compact size but it was well prepared and cleaned. Bathroom size was good. The hotel also offers vending machines.

Double bed could be a bit bigger in size.
