Lovely old building that has, for better or worse (for it), been chopped up into hotel rooms. Room 14 is huge with three large windows overlooking Rapenburg. Nicely furnished; nothing fancy, but stylish. Smallish bathroom but good water pressure and very hot water. The managing brothers, Franz and Willem, were very attentive, helpful, and pleasant. They were very helpful when I had special requests. Really perfect location with tons of restaurants and bars. Reasonably priced.
Paper and plastic cups in the room! Tiny sink so it was hard to fill the kettle. No mini-fridge, but cannot reasonably expect one in a historic building.

Very helpful, kind and client-oriented staff. Original old building in its main part. Great location next to the Antiquities and Japan Museums, close to most of the other ones, as well as other attractions. Bathroom in the room. In general, definitely a place to come back to.
One thing that did not bother me, but could bother those who strictly like silence: day&night parties of the introduction of the new students (outside, by the canal), which however obviously do not happen all the year. The door to the bathroom needed re-painting, and bathroom a working fan removing humidity, but otherwise the room and bathroom were very clean.

Bill, owner, was very pleasant and helpful with check in - even carried our bags up to our room. He was fun to chat with and gave us great advice on finding places, dealing with a sore throat, providing a vase for our tulips, and even what to see/do at our next location. Our room, looking out over the beautiful canal and busy intersection, was spacious and comfortable. The property is older but very clean and functional and charming. Property was excellent location for walking and sightseeing, and even though it's busy outside, the neighborhood becomes silent and still after about 8 pm making for a good sleep. I'll stay here again for sure!
Nothing really...our stay was perfect!

I really enjoyed staying at De Doelen. It is an old hotel and does not have elevators. I was met by Frans who kindly carried my suitcase up the stairs to the fourth floor. Every time I left or arrived, Frans was always there with great friendliness. It is a simple and cozy hotel, I felt very good. The location is exceptional, right in the historic center of Leiden, just a few blocks from where Rembrandt was born. It is possible to walk to Leiden Central station, about 10 minutes.
I had no issues in the hotel, quite the opposite. The only thing I will put here as an observation for future guests is that by morning I could hear movement and conversations in the hall. If I needed to sleep more It could have been a problem but, I was awake and getting ready to leave.

The room was charming, and the bathroom was well appointed. The location was excellent and easy to find. The breakfast was good and well served. William at the front desk was kind, accommodating and helpful. The building itself is magnificent - 18th century with many original things like the beautiful staircase and the plaster work.
It would have been good to be able to sit at the desk on the chair provided but there wasn't enough space. It took some time to get the lighting next to the bed working. I had to move the bed to see what was going on. Even then the wall light didn't work. I would have liked cotton sheets and real feather pillows. They make a hotel especially good for me.

The period features are amazing. Good communication with the owners. Breakfast worth the money. Location is the best you can get in town. The bathroom was recently refurbished and shower was good, though an additional tent is needed to keep all water inside.
As part of being an historical Dutch house, walls are pretty thin. I could hear everything my neighbours were doing and the floor is wooden and squeaky. The room arrangement is a bit chaotic, but could be that it's according to the old plan. Doors and some item of furniture are worn down.

Best way to describe it as " shabby chic " - very old merchants house on posh canal and right by centre ( withing a hundred or so metres) . Great experience . Would visit again . Room we were allocated was huge .
signage was terrible - coming as we did from canal side there is NOTHING at all to indicate its a hotel ( there is a small sign pointing in other direction which only noticed following day . The very drole owner/ manager said " we like to be " low key" but not for disabled - no lift and steep stairs

The location was great. Easily walkable from train station and Natralis. A wide variety of food and shopping options are nearby, Beautiful part of the city with many historic structures, including a working windmill with a museum inside.
The temperature control was not very good. The heat was adjustable only by opening and closing a. valve on the radiator (hot water heat) and so finding a comfortable temperature took trial and error. I was there in September so I can’t say how it is summer or winter. Bed covers were very heavy, so problematic for a hot sleeper like me. Brushed a cockroach of my pants that were hanging in the closet.

The breakfast was very good and good variety of choices. The various breads were delicious and the sweet rolls.
All those steps luckily my grandson helped me up with mt luggage and the Manager brought in down and left it behind the check desk for my early flight. He also made me and other guests feel welcome and helpful.

The hotel was steeped in history. The reason I booked in the first place as I was visiting the Rijksmuseum in the sane street. It delivered above my and my daughters expectations. Staff friendly and helpful. The room was amazing with 2 levels. Felt like we were in an Austen novel. Breakfast delicious. Highly recommend.
Honestly it was everything we were looking for so keep doing what you’re doing now. Don’t change.
