An interesting and excellent quality hotel with character in a central location. Free parking across the road and an easy walk into town. The staff were helpful, professional and friendly. An older, traditional building that has been sympathetically modernized, including a nicely fitted-out bar, used by residents and locals, with discreet background music, a nice selection of local brews and a good atmosphere.
Slightly noisy in my road-facing room, but not to the point of disturbing sleep.

Great rooms and excellent bars and atmosphere
Maybe not offer to have the bar as a Carlisle travelling fans pub as it was chaos. We came for the game, but left the bar and went elsewhere due to the chaotic nature of those fans escorted off the train and straight into the Duke Of Ed Bar. Bad move!! We came for the game, but are not young football hooligans.

Our room was absolutely lovely, spacious, very comfy beds and a fantastic on-suite bathroom with a lovely big shower 🚿and tea and coffee making facilities and a smart tv with all the streaming services , just sign in to your own account to watch netflix or what ever but dont forget to sign out before you leave . The hotel had its own lift which was just as well cause we were on the top floor and I'm not as fit as I used to be so appreciated the lift . The hotel has a lovely bar and restaurant and the food was lovely . You can get food cheaper down the road in a weatherspoons but it's not as classy or as good in my opinion and me myself don't mind paying a little extra for quality .
The lift was a little slow lol .

Room was clean, and comfortable amenities where good, staff where great, talkative and friendly, hotel was lovey and certainly not expecting what's inside from its location. Evening meal and drinks where excellent quality and the call button is an excellent feature to save being disturbed or having to go the bar. Even though we had a road facing room the traffic wasn't excessive and didn't spoil the stay.
Room could do with a bigger fan in warmer weather. Nothing really negative to say, I was a little apprehensive with the location but overall I wouldn't let that put you off booking.

wow, a beautiful hotel steeped in history. Beautiful decor, spotlessly clean and well maintained. Friendly staff, dinner especially the steak fantastic!
we had booked an executive room, floor 3 in the cook’s annexe. Lovely decor, large room with 2 armchairs and large bathroom. But … it was exceptionally hot!! Air conditioning but did not do enough to stop the overwhelming heat in that room. We opened the velux windows and closed the blinds through the remote controls, not enough for the heat to diminish. Put the air conditioning on and still not enough affective. Entering the bathroom to shower and noticed that towel rail on full heat with no option to turn off, felt like I was in Greece with 40 degree temperature! Totally spoilt my visit and night sleep but totally understand that this is the downfall of top of building room but it was sweltering!!

The room was spacious, heating was spot on, sound deadening was great and the bed was comfortable. We'll worth the visit. The food in the hotel was exceptional! We had a couple of portions of food during our stay and I think even Gordon Ramsey wouldn't be able to pick fault at any of what we had! The bar staff were great too! We asked for an ice bucket and 2 fizz glasses as we had brought our own champagne for the room and they had no objections to providing these. Some other places we have stayed have raised eyebrows or objected to this. Top marks for The Duke! Will stay here again!
If I had to nit pick, the bathroom could have done with a spray of mould and mildew remover along the grout and silicone sealant in the bathroom as it was showing signs of black mould patches but nothing excessive that couldn't be cleaned.

We really loved the room we were allocated (16), having air con, coffee and tea making facilities and a beautiful bathroom was fabulous. Customer service at check in was fantastic, the lady who checked us in was friendly professional and knowledgeable and I believe she should be praised for her good work.
It would have been great to have a hairdryer in the room, and it also would have been great to have a menu for the bistro in the room as well as some general information (check out time, things to do in the area etc). The TV was quite old would be great to see that upgraded to a smart TV.

Reception staff were friendly and attentive. Check in was swift and they helped me later with an invoice query without delay. The bedroom was presented really well and we appreciated the good sized bathroom and separate wardrobe area. Greeted by friendly staff member in breakfast area within hotel bar. Freshly cooked breakfast to our specific order, served in a timely manner. Plentiful supply of cereals and juices. Breakfast area was clean and comfortable. Good spacing between tables allowed for private conversation. We had a very comfortable stay and hope to return again. Thank you.

Central location, free parking, nice bar/restaurant, food was good, staff very attentive and helpful.
Bathroom had been cleaned but looked like someone had been sick previously and toilet bowl, bath and toilet paper all had remains of sick on. Also could smell it in the bathroom. Went to reception and someone came to clean it straight away and apologised.

It was a short stay for us as we pass through the Lake Districts and this beautiful hotel was suggested. Located right in the center of town, parking was located diagonally across the road and there was TESCO nearby. Many shops are within walking distances. The hotel Itself is a very rustic and well decorated hotel that portrays the nicely designed traditional English interior. The room is adequate, comes complete with amenities. There is a window with a bit of a view, but mainly rooftops. The pub and restaurant is also nice, providing nice English breakfast.
The lift was beautiful and rustic, but only 3-4 persons allowed at any one time (without luggage). Rooms were relatively small for the price paid. Lastly, the table lamp was not working and requires repairing.
