The location means you can be in Exeter in 25 minutes or pretty much anywhere on Dartmoor or the south coast in 30 minutes or so. It’s quiet and beautiful and is outstandingly dog friendly. The staff are unfailing friendly and really add to the enjoyment of the stay.
We had some of the rooms they keep for people with dogs. Even taking that into account they lacked facilities - like a fridge - and were a little bit “tired”. Totally clean but maybe in need of a refurbishment. The general property on the inside also has a bit of ‘faded grandeur’ to it.

Love this hotel. Great value for a stop over to visit our daughter. Great that it's dog friendly, too. Good location for Exeter, beaches at Exmouth, Dawlish and Teignmouth. Forest walks to discover next time. Friendly welcoming staff. Breakfast was additional cost, but that gave us the flexibility if we'd wanted to get out early and eat elsewhere. On this occasion we paid for breakfast which was excellent, with cereals, fruit, juice, tea/coffee and a range of cooked options.
Had to book with Booking.com as booking direct with the hotel couldn't match the price. Website was ambiguous about charge for the dog. We were happy to pay the £15 for our dog's stay.

We stayed for two nights and it could not have been better. The location was beautiful, the staff amazing, the room was super and the food was great. All of the staff were friendly and attentive, although very busy. We hadn't planned to stay for dinner but we did on the first night - then again on the second night as it was so good. After a half day in Exeter we stayed in the comfy lounge reading our books and had a walk around the grounds. It was just so relaxed and informal but every detail was taken care of. On arrival there was a letter in our room advising us of a function on our second night. We really appreciated that notice, although it caused no inconvenience whatsoever. Would highly recommend the hotel. If it wasn't 8 hours away from our home we'd become regular visitors. Thank you to the team for a great stay.
Nothing - it was perfect.

The Location was lovely and peaceful, with wonderful views. We enjoyed sitting in the well kept gardens. The hotel has friendly staff, and we had a nice sized room. We came to celebrate our wedding anniversary. And to visit the nearby Toby Buckland Garden Festival at Powderham Castle. Which was wonderful. Unfortunately, our car broke down on the second day and had to go home to our garage with the RAC. A gentleman on the reception. (I think his name was Paco) was really helpful . We were able to hire a car from Enterprise near Exeter. We enjoyed mostly really great breakfasts and dinners. The staff were professional, friendly, and attentive.
One member of staff often seems to cover reception, the bar, and serve meals, which with the best will in the world always leaves guests waiting, sometimes for some time. Housekeeping. We placed the service my room out on the door handle. The tea tray was reset, but nothing else was touched! Please cook scrambled egg so that it is soft and creamy. It doesn't take long. Mine was brown and dry. The kippers were pink in the middle and still stuck together in a pile. Simple presentation really does make food look appetising and palatable. There is not a lot of choice on the dinner menu especially if a guest is restricted on what they are able to eat. (Not allergies) All the other food was really nice.

Room was an excellent size, with a great view of the surrounding countryside. There was a good walk for dogs in the locality & pets were welcome in most areas of the hotel. The dinners we had were very good, plentiful & reasonably priced.
The menu was probably a bit limited for a longer stay. Didn't opt for breakfast as found it a bit expensive & too late at the weekend. Tetley tea in the room, yuk! Not a preferred brand. All the pillows were very uncomfortable. The hairdryer was making end of life noises.

The staff were exceedingly pleasant, very helpful and just sweet. The accommodation was clean and crisp. We had a meal which was an excellent evening meal with a very nice bottle of wine. Very efficiently served (no waiting). Served on time when arranged. The hotel is set in beautiful grounds. It was dog friendly.
The road leading to it (from the Southwest) was very unpleasant to drive on. The music in the bar was a bit too loud. The barmaid had a long and loud conversation with a guest or someone she knew really well, which was not very professional. We were the only two others in the bar. These are meant to be helpful comments as we really enjoyed our stay there.

My room was very comfortable and clean and the hotel was very quiet. Breakfast was great and my evening meal really good. A sudden snow storm meant I couldn't get my car out of the car park and as the hotel is off the beaten track I am sure the conditions on the road were just as bad. So, I decided to stay another night and the hotel staff were very helpful and understanding of my predicament - and of other guests also snowed in!
Everything was very clean but a little tired looking.

Breakfast was ok, some items need replenishing more frequently but only ever seemed to be one person on duty. Room was nice and light with good views.
Evening meal very expensive for what it was, so didn’t have it again. Extra charges for cheese on a burger and although it is dog friendly, we ordered a item for our dog and then was told he couldn’t eat it at the table (even on his own plate we had brought with us). Walls must be very thin as could hear someone going to the toilet in the next room🙈

We stayed in room 1 and room 2. They were both generous sized rooms with a pleasant view over the surrounding hills. The room had great amenities with plenty of tea coffee milk etc and the staff even provided extra shower gel and shampoo upon request, not that you'd need to as the contents of the bottles were more than adequate. The staff were all very pleasant, especially the cleaning lady Grazyna, who went above and beyond and made our stay feel very comfortable with her kind words and big smile! The cooked breakfast was lovely.
A pleasant stay butnif we have to say what could be improved. Therl carpet was show9ng it's age and room 2 ha a disjointed doorway into the bathroom. Georgie although friendly was hard to find in the restaurant at breakfast as she was busying away and although there were only 2 tables in there were no extra pain au chocolat available without a 20min wait. The toast was cold. The bedrooms were slightly too warm and it was hard to find a balance. We disagreed on the comfort of the beds, but we both had a good night's sleep.

Warm and comfortable room. Very good breakfast. Worth travelling out of Exeter for the peaceful setting in the rolling Devon countryside.
Only one beer ( they call it ale nowadays to differentiate from lager !) in the bar and it had reached the end of the barrell so couldn't have what I had been looking forward to after an afternoon's gardening.
