The food was exceptional. We had booked 7 nights bed and breakfast, but after dinner on the first night decided to eat at the Bowes Incline every night. The menu was sufficiently varied to allow different choices each night. The food wasn't overly fancy but it was really good food, good portions and exceptionally well cooked. The restaurant was always busy even though at the end of a no-through road (no passing custom). So the locals clearly know it is a great place to eat. Breakfasts were similarly good and we didn't need lunch on any day. All the staff were really friendly and helpful. Nothing was too much trouble. The bed was comfortable. The room was clean.
This isn't a criticism but a suggestion. The room was a good size but only had a chair one side of the bed. A second chair would fit the other side and would be a good idea in some rooms to allow couples to avoid having to sit on the bed which isn't as comfortable. The room doors don't close quietly, making it noisy if guests retire late or are up early.

The staff were marvellous- nothing was too much trouble, friendly, polite and efficient. One chap even posted back to me an important item that I had stupidly left behind, how’s that for service! Because they were full when we originally booked we were allocated to the room for a disabled guest ( which I gather is awaiting a revamp) but when we requested a room move they were able to oblige and moved us the next morning. Much nicer room, bright, nicely decorated and modern. Would recommend and stay there again. Good pub food and reasonably priced.
Room for a disabled guest needs modernisation.

Excellent from start to finish. Contacted the hotel before the stay and communication was prompt and clear. Room very well presented, clean, warm and a good size. Restaurant and bar also very well presented and the food was excellent (portions are quite big) and very reasonably priced. Last but not least, every member of the staff was polite, friendly and very welcoming! We will use again next time we stay in the area.
It's not really a didn't like, but hopefully more helpful to someone visiting the first time and arriving in the dark - the hotel is accessed by a small country lane, just keep going and the hotel is just after the riding school.

Location was great, with being only a short distance to drive to all the places we wanted to visit - approx 20 minutes to Beamish Museum and about the same to the Bridges Shopping Centre. It was lovely seeing the horses nearby each day as we were driving in and out of the hotel! The Breakfast was fine, although the veggie breakfast could have been a little bigger but it was nice! The staff were friendly and the hotel being all on the ground floor level suited us perfectly with a family member having a disability, it made the whole hotel so accessible which was ideal. There was plenty of parking available as well which was good! Overall very good and we would stay again.
Only a few little things that could be improved, as overall it was a very good stay! In our room, we struggled to put any plugs into the sockets above the shelf attached to the wall (where the tea and coffee is left) as the plug sockets were too close to the shelf to actually be able to fit a plug easily but there was an extension lead on top of a set of drawers so there is the option to use. No socket for an electric razor so we had to purchase an adapter plug but this has been the case in a few hotels.

We had a great 2day stay, the hotel is in a quiet location but very close to A1 motorway so you can get around all the local sights easily ,we found our rooms to be very comfortable and clean .we had our evening meals in the pub restaurant and what great food we had ,the staff are super friendly and can’t do enough for you .We had two breakfasts which were excellent .It is the second time we have stayed here and we will be back in the future. You will not be disappointed if you stay here but you must try the food😀😀😀
Nothing to dislike a great hotel and restaurant

Staff were fabulous, very helpful and courteous. We were on our way to Shetland. On our first night we had a double bed (or queen bed) which is just too small for two people, we didn't sleep a wink. A week later on our way home, we were given a king size bed after my request. There is plenty of parking space and despite being very close to the A1, it was quiet and restful. Typical nowadays pub food.
Beter information about the rooms at the time of booking. Large pub, but a bit dark and sombre. Beware, lots of trees in the parking lot and our car bonnet got covered in bird poo. The chef, who arrived early that morning, cleaned up the mess for us ... what a great guy !

This is an exceptional location if travelling up or down the A1. It is only just off the road but feels as if you are in the country. The welcome is very warm and all the staff were very kind and helpful throughout our stay---family run and it feels they really care about the place. Rooms are simple and very clean. We had a very good meal in the popular restaurant in the evening and breakfast was also very good. Portions are very generous! We had a pleasant walk overlooking the Angel of the North. The price was very reasonable and it will be used by us again.
The main course was so filling I couldn't manage dessert!

It was awesome. A small room but so impressive. My partner was so impressed and felt so special. The location is slightly remote but the surrounding area is picturesque wuth fields and horses. The huge Metrocentre is a quuck 10 minute or so ride away. The cost was very reasonable. The attached restaurant and bar are cozy with excellent standard British food at a good price.
Access to the front door after a certain time, either 9 or 10 requires pushing a button for a late night staff member to come open it for you. Sunday meal service ends too early, like 6 or so which caught us off guard. Breakfast required filling out a menu the night before but staff gladly accepted late menus. The place books up fast and so extending our stay meant having to go to another hotel and returning. Could have moved in to be honest.

First impressions were good from arriving at reception where I was greeted by a friendly smile by a lovely young lady who explained about the restaurant. Once arriving in the restaurant, again all staff were helpful and friendly. It wasn't long before my order was taken, I chose a mushroom starter and scampi for dinner. The food was very nice, better than nice excellent, however portions were a little large for me, not a complaint just an observation. Slept well in the comfy bed, even though on the ground floor minimal noise. Room was very clean, with teas, coffee and biscuits. Bathroom modern, clean with a great shower, which is always a bonus. I would highly recommend the Bowes Incline for a stay. I will certainly stay again when I am working in the area again.
There was nothing I didn't like.

Great hotel, staff, bar, restaurant and great location for exploring! Do not be put off from seeing the hotel from the A1 - we wondered what on earth we had booked but as soon as we arrived, we realised it was a gorgeous hotel. Rooms were spacious, well decorated and spotless. As were the communal areas. Pub and restaurant were cracking, the food was amazing and reasonably priced. Loved that it was basically cooked to order and proper home cooked food. A telling sign of how good it is was the amount of locals who were there for a meal! Staff were great, really friendly, good fun, we could have a laugh with them, especially over the coffee machine that decided it didn’t want to work - we were banned from ordering coffee for the rest of our stay! We enjoyed our stay immensely and will definitely be looking to book again.
Water pressure in shower wasn’t great, if you turned water hotter, pressure was a bit low and not as strong as we would like. We did manage to get a good, strong jet but then the water was cold! Couldn’t work out why pressure seemed low especially as the hand basin was perfect!
