The staff were exceptional and so kind and pleasant, the bedroom was immaculate and the comfiest bed with gorgeous en-suite.

Every meal we had at the hotel in various restaurants was cold, this wasn’t just an issue we had but was also vocalised by other guests. The spa was not tidy, towels and robes and plastic bottles were abandoned in the spa, there was no one on duty making sure it was clean and tidy. The bedroom became really cold at night and the heating did not work, none of the radiators in the whole hotel were turned on. The hotel does not serve food at any restaurant past 8.30pm, not even bar snacks on an evening so if you miss last reservations you will be starving until morning. The tv remote in our room did not work and they are not smart TVs so no Netflix or YouTube are available. No WiFi or signal throughout the whole property.

Breakfast experience was a total let down. Staff unattentive. My wife was given the wrong first course. I had to chase up my first course. We asked for a mix of toast butcwere given all granary toast. Staff were not easy to find.

We always love the ambience and beauty of Matfen Hall! The rooms are beautiful and clean and the spa is relaxing too! We love the food offerings and just always go home feeling rested and refreshed and wanting to return! The staff make this place. So attentive, I don’t think I’ve ever been told no!

The restaurant options are limited for daytime eating and evening eating. With cloisters closing at 8.30 and the only other dining a fine dining tasting menu it can be tricky to plan your day! But the food is always delicious! A variation in the Cloisters day and evening menu would be lovely as we have visited a few times now and it hasn’t ever changed its limited offerings.

An utterly delightful experience, end to end. The reception and porter staff were incredibly friendly and helpful, and we were welcomed in with a welcome drink and a personal consultation with the receptionist where we picked our dining and activity times. The building itself was simply glorious and finished to an incredibly high standard. Original features were immaculate and the modern touches very well incorporated - the overall visual effect is stunning. The room (comfort) was huge and the bed/bedding extremely comfortable and luxurious. A turn down service while we were at dinner was a lovely touch. The food at Cloisters was very good too - the flat iron steak was particularly good. Breakfast was very generous and we stayed for an afternoon tea in the morning room which was quite simply stunning. An amazing treat of a trip, we'll definitely come back and have already been recommending it to friends. Bravo.

The only small downside is that the spa area could do with a refresh. The sauna was lovely and pool very pleasant, but the 2 steam rooms needed a thorough clean (smelt a bit damp and mouldy) and the men's changing rooms updating. We didn't choose the hotel for the spa though - and the waiting area, robes and free water were all a great touch, but if I'd paid for a day lounging in the pool and in the thermal facilities I'd have been a bit disappointed as everything else was such a high standard.

From walking in through the door Aimee met us ask on of the staff to fetch our cases and park our car took through to the great hall given a rum punch drink, and everything explained in great detail our meal times booked in . Food was 1st class we had a sandwich on the afternoon salmon on soft cheese with triple cooked chips absolutely brilliant 👏 . We were shown our room it was well equipped and generous size very comfortable indeed . We went to the spa pool sauna steam room again 1st class facilities. Evening meal was just perfect I had ribeye steak cooked exactly how I asked my wife had the lamb again cooked to perfect this is a top notch hotel with facilities and staff to match very friendly and helpful. We will be back forsure

Nothing to dislike

From the moment we walked Into Maften Hall we were greeted by a wonderful gentleman Desmond, who offered to help with our bags and we received our welcome drink. The property is stunning, and the staff are exceptional! We were very lucky to be offered a complimentary upgrade so thank you so much for this Claire! The property itself is beautiful and the only thing we didn't like is that we didn't have another night! The staff couldn't do enough and as we were celebrating they made our stay here just perfect. We will be back! Thank you again.

Our room sadly had a radiator which set to 0 however still gave out heat, this has been reported to the reception but did not taint an inch of our stay.

Everything about Matfen is exceptional. The whole place breathes comfort, relaxation and being well looked after. Nothing is too much trouble We had a horrendous journey because of an incident with our car. We were offered an additional night free of charge which we couldn't manage. So we were given a late checkout. We needed a new tyre. Staff got in touch with a local company and arranged for them to be there very quickly. Several of the staff were able to give background history of the Hall Food with several gluten-free options was delicious

There isn't anything not to like

The place itself has been decorated to an unbelievably high standard. It is immaculate. Modern yet traditional. It feels expensive. Drink on arrival and free concierge service was a nice touch.

Ordered various breakfast items which didn’t turn up. Had to remind them twice for coffee and orange juice. Then they served toast once we had finished our full English. The food was pretty average for the price. £27 for cauliflower steak which was bland. £34 for the lamb which was cooked beautifully however only came with a dollop of potatoe and half a carrot. The jus was just gravy.

The Hall is magnificent. Beautifully refurbished with top-quality fixtures and finishings. Our room was luxurious and comfortable with a huge bed. The mattress was supportive and very comfortable. All the bedlinen is crisp, white, and spotless. Pillows, bathrobes & cushions are monogrammed with the Matfen Hall crest. Staff were exceptional. They anticipate your every need. They are also very good at remembering information about you and revisiting it the following day, which is a sign of well trained, interested staff. Having spoken to quite a few of them, they all said how lovely it is to work at the hall & they appreciate that it is family owned & the owners are good to work for. We ate dinner & breakfast here. I would have loved to have tried the tasting menu, but I'm allergic to shellfish & 3 of the dishes contained shellfish. Notwithstanding, we ate from the à la carte menu and had a lovely meal. Breakfast was excellent with good local produce, cooked to perfection, well presented. Again, staff service was EXCELLENT. The bar staff are also very professional and proficient. Cocktails were really good. I am 60 years old & have stayed in hundreds of hotels in my years, and this would rank in my top 3.

Nothing. I enjoyed all of it. I think you'd go a long way to find a better overall experience than Matfen Hall. The only downside, and it's a small one.....the steam room was out of use on our stay. It wasn't much of an issue, though. The jacuzzi & sauna are a little small, but I understand they too will be refurbished presently.

Comfortable, quiet room with every amenity provided. Staff were very friendly.

The breakfast service was poor. We were offered the wrong order and we saw this happening multiple times to other tables. Part of our order was forgotten and we saw others asking for forgotten parts of their order too. We phoned reception from our room on three or four times and couldn't get through.
