The staff were exceptional and so kind and pleasant, the bedroom was immaculate and the comfiest bed with gorgeous en-suite.

Every meal we had at the hotel in various restaurants was cold, this wasn’t just an issue we had but was also vocalised by other guests. The spa was not tidy, towels and robes and plastic bottles were abandoned in the spa, there was no one on duty making sure it was clean and tidy. The bedroom became really cold at night and the heating did not work, none of the radiators in the whole hotel were turned on. The hotel does not serve food at any restaurant past 8.30pm, not even bar snacks on an evening so if you miss last reservations you will be starving until morning. The tv remote in our room did not work and they are not smart TVs so no Netflix or YouTube are available. No WiFi or signal throughout the whole property.

The location. The room. The spa facilities.

Breakfast experience was a total let down. Staff unattentive. My wife was given the wrong first course. I had to chase up my first course. We asked for a mix of toast butcwere given all granary toast. Staff were not easy to find.

We had a fantastic mini moon here for the weekend following our wedding. It is absolutely beautiful. Inside it's a wonderful mix of old and modern. We were met by 2 lovely staff members, John (who got us welcome drinks and a mab who sadly we didn't catch his name but he had fair hair, glasses and showed us to our room. Both were so welcoming and pleasant throughout our stay. We both enjoyed our daily chats with John. The rooms were beautiful and clean. The bathroom was amazing with a massive bath. We only ate at the new Keepers restaurant which was whilst still beautiful a more relaxed setting. The food was incredibly good quality for the price and delicious. There's a lovely town around 5 miles away with lots of cafes and independent shops.

The only slight negative was the room was boiling for September (even with the fan on). We couldn't see a way to turn the underfloor heating down. This in no way affected our stay and I have no doubt had we raised it to staff, it would have been rectified. It also made me desperately want to return and stay during winter months.

We always love the ambience and beauty of Matfen Hall! The rooms are beautiful and clean and the spa is relaxing too! We love the food offerings and just always go home feeling rested and refreshed and wanting to return! The staff make this place. So attentive, I don’t think I’ve ever been told no!

The restaurant options are limited for daytime eating and evening eating. With cloisters closing at 8.30 and the only other dining a fine dining tasting menu it can be tricky to plan your day! But the food is always delicious! A variation in the Cloisters day and evening menu would be lovely as we have visited a few times now and it hasn’t ever changed its limited offerings.

An utterly delightful experience, end to end. The reception and porter staff were incredibly friendly and helpful, and we were welcomed in with a welcome drink and a personal consultation with the receptionist where we picked our dining and activity times. The building itself was simply glorious and finished to an incredibly high standard. Original features were immaculate and the modern touches very well incorporated - the overall visual effect is stunning. The room (comfort) was huge and the bed/bedding extremely comfortable and luxurious. A turn down service while we were at dinner was a lovely touch. The food at Cloisters was very good too - the flat iron steak was particularly good. Breakfast was very generous and we stayed for an afternoon tea in the morning room which was quite simply stunning. An amazing treat of a trip, we'll definitely come back and have already been recommending it to friends. Bravo.

The only small downside is that the spa area could do with a refresh. The sauna was lovely and pool very pleasant, but the 2 steam rooms needed a thorough clean (smelt a bit damp and mouldy) and the men's changing rooms updating. We didn't choose the hotel for the spa though - and the waiting area, robes and free water were all a great touch, but if I'd paid for a day lounging in the pool and in the thermal facilities I'd have been a bit disappointed as everything else was such a high standard.

The staff were friendly, and the place was less stuffy than expected for its class. This was our first ever visit to Nothumberland although we had visited most parts of the UK over the years. We stayed at Matfen Hall Hotel for three night during our 44th Weddinig Anniversary. It was within easy reach of sections of Hadrian's Wall and Sycamore Gap with its its fenced-off sycamote tree stump, both of which my wife and I had planned to visit. We also made a day trip to Lindisfarne (or Holy Island), another place we had wanted to visit for years. Matfen Hall Hotel is a golfing hotel. We are not golfer but enjoyed staying there for our special visit and enjoyed the 8-course tasting menu on the evening of our anniversary, except for the Tunworth banana/banana bread/Exmoor caviar combination. Corbridge Roman ruins and and the small adjacent museum is an interesting place to visit for those who are interested in the history of Roman Britain.

Breakfast service could have been better organised: people were sometimes shown to to their tables without menus priovided at the same time. There was a long wait, with people quitely complaining, and some breakfast being served in the wrong order (sometimes). Our room digital key pass was was cancelled on each day we had been out, and it meant a long trip back to reception for somebody to reprogram the cards which became tiresome. When asked the question, one of the staff members at reception said that it was happening to other guests "all the time".

Beautiful setting. Fabulous building with lovely rooms and furnishings

Cloisters restaurant is a lovely space but unfortunately our meal wasn’t up to the standard we expected. Main course food was only part cooked and not really edible. Cheese board was listed with walnut bread but appeared without any, I queried it with the waiter who said crackers are all you get so I asked him to check the menu and he returned to drop a single piece of stale bread onto the table without any apology.. pretty disappointing for a 5* hotel. I think there may have been a kitchen issue that evening to perhaps explain the poor the service.

Beautiful! Location is gorgeous and the views lovely. The gardens are so well kept and really well planned. Interiors are very Hogwarts with a modern twist. Comfortable. Clean. Slept so well. The staff were so friendly and were there to help if we got lost! And the 2 lads in charge of cocktails get special mention. One went out of his way to make me a cocktail I would really like and I liked the way that he tried another out on me (which was great) but then handed all the credit to his colleague who had come up with it. Lovely lads! Food was lovely, again, staff very relaxed and natural. Swimming pool also fabulous.

That we had to leave!

Love this place. From the moment we arrived to leaving, we found friendly, no actually they were all lovely staff. Nothing too much for them. Desmond, a real gentleman who arranged the parking of our car and bags to the room. Lovely beds, linen, bathrooms, stunning bars, and seating areas. Superb food. Charming bar staff. Must include Mark and Isac. Surrounding stunning. It's a real treat to spend a night there Will be returning to take an opportunity to have some pampering with the delightful lady we chatted to. Sadly, I don't know her name. The pool area is superb. Congratulations to one and all.and our heart felt thanks for making our 25th wedding anniversary so special and memorable.

Nothing at all. Albeit some guests struggled to sleep due to the heat. Fans are in all rooms, but I expect like us they didn't fancy the noise of fans all night. But this is due to the night-time temperatures, not the hotel.

The hotel and rooms were lovely and extremely clean. The location and ground are beautiful with easy access to local towns. All the staff were very helpful and pleasant. Breakfast and evening meals in the main restaurant were excellent.

Unfortunately we were unable to book any spa treatments due to short staffing however we had been advised before arrival we could be accommodated - had we known this we would have cancelled out booking as we were visiting for a special occasion. The tasting menu was very disappointing with all of the hot dishes arriving cold.
