The staff was very friendly and helpful and the hotel was clean and comfortable. The owner was present and clearly invested in her guests having a good stay, too. The price was quite decent for a single room with its own bathroom-- the best I encountered on a month plus of travel (admittedly with a fair number of cruises in there), and it was a great value in general. It is also a fairly easy twenty minute walk to the cruise port, even with luggage. And it was centrally located for the few sites in Southampton that I was interested in viewing.

Honestly, the only issue I had was that the water was a little hard or something, so it took awhile to rinse soap off. That isn't much of a downside and I can heartily recommend the Star Hotel.

Friendly staff and lovely owner ( her and the bank!). First room allocated had a bathroom defect, next room was fine. Got breakfast downstairs, was adequate and ok value for money, but a next time I will get breakfast at the next door Wetherspoons. Super location for a central stay and pre-cruise stay. great local places for food and drinks nearby, shopping mall and street at it's feet. easy to walk from Central station and toi the cruise terminal. Great value for money on a Sunday night.

Due to room size and lay out, it was difficult getting out of bed on the one side where the power plug was to charge my phone as well.

My friend and chose The Star because of its reasonable rates and locality to the port at Southampton. However, we didn’t factor in the Southampton Marathon and the disruption to traffic etc. We pre-ordered a taxi but we, nor the hotel reception, had been informed that the taxi had been waiting at another destination as the driver couldn’t get to our hotel. The taxi refused to come out again. Kindly, the lovely owner of the hotel, Gaie, said that she would drive us to the port. We bundled our considerable amount of luggage into her car and she got us there bang on time for our ship embarkation, even though nearly every road she turned into was blocked. My friend and I would like to give her a big thank you for going above and beyond. A word about the hotel, the staff are very helpful, friendly and approachable and our room, a twin, was spacious and airy. All in all a good stay and we will use The Star again if we are ever in Southampton in the future. Penny & Jane

The location was perfect for seeing the historical features of the city as well as being close to shopping and a good range.of.Resraurants. the place itself has a great historic feel with all sorts of nooks and crannys to explore and the creaky floorboards and old lift add to the charm. Staff gave a friendly welcome.

Need to offer some kind of better Cooling facilities especially peak summer. Ideally Aircon but a better functioning fan would have sufficed. Plastic fans just don't quite hit the mark. Water pressure could also be better.

This hotel was very well organised, and every interaction I had with a member of its staff was pleasant, as they are all friendly and cheerful. The room was bigger than I expected and perfectly clean and comfortable. The location is ideal for anyone staying in southampton as it is central. Overall, I thought the hotel was fantastic value for money.

The internal decor is a little tired and run down, the whole place would benefit from a freshen up. The cables and wiring for our TV were a bit suspect, but after a bit of a wiggle everything worked fine. The hotel offers a basic experience, but they get the basics right, which is often let down in other places I've stayed in.

the hotel was calm and peaceful even tho it’s in a central location room was clean and relaxing the older lady at front desk was amazing and a male staff that upgraded our room was amazing. bar staff was amazing

there was one guy at the desk was just on the phone with no care in the world!! older lady had to ask him to check us in bless her then I ask to book a taxi for 04:30am to head to train station. that taxi was not booked by this staff who had no care so that was the only let down to the stay at the hotel

Excellent location, very friendly staff upon arrival. Room was perfect for my needs (solo traveller staying for one night and ideal location for my work the following morning). Room recently upgraded / decorated with new carpet. TV signal not the best / kept freezing but was ok. Parking available to the side/rear of the hotel if any spaces left. I was lucky. £6 per night paid direct to the hotel. Lovely breakfast too. Would def stay again.

Unfortunately no evening meal possible in the hotel but there is a Wetherspoons pub next door so that was fine.

Everything! The atmosphere was so warm and friendly, the staff were welcoming and efficient. The hotel felt like a home rather than a hotel. only one small niggle. I’d asked for a twin room for my daughters, but there was only one bed - more like a Queen than a double. I didn’t realise until I visited their room, by which time they had unpacked so I didn’t ask for another room. My single room was fine, but as it was about as far from my daughters room as it could be, and as I’d asked for our rooms to be as close as possible…. other than that we all loved everything about this lovely old hotel and it’s staff.

nothing!

Typical English breakfast, nothing special or giving you the feeling you want to come back for more. Please do not understand me wrong, I was not hungry still there is no place like home. I was missing more fresh fruits and vegetables. Very nice and professional service both in reception and during breakfast time. Hotel has some original and demanding corridor routing. Room we had was very spacious and comfortable to live in. We didn't had any troubles with excessive noises coming from other guests. I will come back definitely.

Corridor doors are ridiculous, canteen needs to be refreshed asap - especially windows. Same with toilets - please hire a team and paint the walls at least. There were also cracks on the ceiling in main room, this does not look. All in all it was interesting experience. I definitely will come back.

This a quirky hotel which has seen better days. Winding corridors and stairs everywhere and hardly a level floor in the whole building. The facilities are basic (eg no bedside lights) but the staff were very friendly and helpful. The whole place was clean and recently decorated and the bed was very comfortable. Very substantial English breakfast with hash browns beans etc. What more could you ask for at this price?

Southampton is looking very run down compared to when I studied there several decades ago.
