The Oriental Hotel

The rooms and bathrooms and entire place was well kept and clean. The location was handy with alot of lovely coffee shops and pubs around. Our room had a little fan heater which was all we needed. It was quite big which was helpful. The kids and us sat on the floor and played some board games.

The only thing was the amount of time it took to get hot water in one of the shared bathrooms (of which there was 2). I would say it took 6-7 min for it to come through and I just hate wasting water. My only other suggestion would be just for something to put your clothes and toiletries on in the bathrooms, a little cabinet or cube shelves would have been useful.

Good value and location. The bed was super comfortable and the shared showers lovely and clean. Towels were provided, but a small bar of soap would have been great. The pub downstairs gets great scores for pizzas and the menu looked great, but it was trivia night and a bit busy, and when we were told it would take 50 minutes for our pizzas to be ready we decided to eat elsewhere. Staff were super nice.

Friendly staff; effectively supportive when I triggered their circuit breaker with my faulty powerboard, located in a nice tree-lined street (mostly) of well-maintained terrace houses, close to the civic centre, not far from the tram. Shared bathroom was clean and tidy

All-night soccer party at the pub across the road was very noisy. There were fewer power points than I sought but that is just a function of the building's age.

Lovely residential street, easy to Darby street, friendly staff. Band was literally under our room (sat/sun) which we loved! We were knackered from enjoying newcastle all day, so could enjoy from bed! Finished at 9.30pm both nights - so no issue (crikey, can't believe we were in bed before 9.30,!)

It was old style, but quaint and what I expected. The pub has a charm about it and is obviously a very popular local meeting place.

Nothing stands out as an issue, maybe the bed could have a but more comfortable. But it wasn’t a big deal. I wasn’t expecting 5 star. You have shared facilities and that can be a challenge. But I knew that before I went. Just get your mindset ready for that.

Considering how affordable this was hotel was, it absolutely exceeded my expectations! The location was perfect, the room was spacious and the beds were very comfortable. The facility’s were also very clean. Will definitely be staying again!

The shower head in the shared bathroom needed to be replaced, it was balancing loosely which affected the water pressure. However, the water was lovely and hot which sometimes doesn’t happen in hotels. So overall extremely happy.

The bed was the most comfortable bed I've stayed in for that price.

The stairs were abit steep for my mum but she managed. There was no soap offered. We were there to have a short stay till 3am & were travelling from interstate so wanted a shower. Someone had left a small shampoo tube in the shower so we used that, but it would have been good to have had some soap on hand. It's above a pub so it's going to be noisy, but it got quiet quickly when it closed.

Location is next to Darby Street, which is where its all happening in Newcastle. The staff were very helpful and friendly. The bed was bigger and more comfortable than expected. Great value for money.

I had a front facing room, so it was a little noisy in the morning. I can imagine it might get noisy downstairs, if I'd stayed later in the week, as it is a pub after all.

Lovely large character room, high ceilings, quaint front bar, nice share bathroom, great location, lovely staff. Great pizza menu and good variety of beers on tap. Very reasonable tariff.

Sharing with inconsiderate & untidy people. Consistently slamming their doors, occupying the best bathroom for 2 hours each morning, and leaving toilet paper & hand towel strewn through communal areas. Not at all the hotel's fault (I was just unlucky to be there while this group were).

Location within a reasonable walking distance of coast and city centre. Parking on the street near the property was available and free overnight 17.00-09.00 (2 hours max during the day, so in reality OK from 3pm to 11am next morning). Pub had a good selection of beers (including craft ales) and a good adjacent pizza restaurant - the fact that both were busy on a Thursday night full of locals is always a good indication.
