I always say stay at family owned hotel/motels in New Zealand and this place proved my point even further. It was modern, clean, great location, friendly people and honestly one of the best places I've stayed in on my trip so far. It had smart TVs, good wi-fi, onsite restaurant with good variety, the rooms just felt like a homestay and I loved everything about this place. If I'm ever on the West again this is the only place I'll stay at. Also the handy tips for things to explore when I checked it was also great. The simple things like a handshake - just sealed the deal for me for how down to earth this place was. Just want to say a huge thanks for investing in such a high quality accommodation. Way better than any of the international accommodations by far. 5/5!

Friendly staff, clean, comfortable and spacious property. Well located on the beach and super convenient for visiting family. Great beach for sunsets. Did really appreciate having 2 decent size queens for sleeping ( in 2 different rooms).

We had the room closest to the road this time. Previously had one of the newer rooms facing the beach/grass/sunset etc set further back. It was fine but the outlook to the building over the fence from the outdoor seating area wouldn’t be my first choice. Minor on the scheme of things. Wouldn’t stop us returning to the property. Just to be aware that check in can take place inside at the bar/restaurant or even at the drive through liquor counter.

The bar and restaurant are excellent, recently renovated, very clean and comfortable. The room was much nicer and larger than I expected, clean, comfortable and well equipped. Good value for the price. The location is great, just a short distance south of Greymouth, 2 mins walk to the beach. Convenient for the TranzAlpine train (if you have transport).

The room was stiflingly hot when we arrived and it took a hour after dark with the doors open and lights off (to stop bugs being attracted by the light) to cool the room down. It has been a very hot summer so far and the room has no AC. However, I give them a pass for this as the West Coast is not usually somewhere that AC is required. There's probably only a few days a year when it would be this hot! The shower box was very small, though the shower head itself was great.

The Paroa was ideal after a day travelling over Arthur's Pass. Hokitika is lovely but this ticked all the boxes of convenience for us. As a late booking we were in a disability access room but it was fine. The shower was good, there was sufficient room for cases and a separate seating area. The restaurant was very good - especially the renowned whitebait. A very good one night stay.

The roadworks that set off at 5 in the morning but that was hardly the hotel's fault! A few more little touches to give it more charm wouldn't go amiss but it's good value for money and I recommend it.

Manager (owner?) was so welcoming and accomodating, ready with information and suggestions for things to do and see. Upgraded our room to a larger one at no extra cost, as it was quiet that day. We didn’t have our rental car yet, so he had one of the staff take us to pick it up. Sent another ahead to warm our room. The room itself was clearly designed by someone with comfort and the convenience of guests in mind. Modern and exceptionally clean. The location being near the beach afforded a breathtaking sunset and sunrise. The grounds very well kept, area quiet and lovely. Highly recommended eating there too, we had the ribs and pork belly. The meat was some of the best I’ve had anywhere, incredibly juicy and tender. The service is really something else, will definitely stay there again.

Nothing.

All the good things about the Parao hotel were like little surprises. At first glance as we zoomed by we actually missed the turn thinking it was a hotel. But doubling back we found a wonderful family owned hotel/motel, extra genuinely friendly people and after getting our key from Bernie we drove around to find a wonderful set of new rooms that catered to our every need. The beach lay just beyond, a nice little jaunt at sunset. Our meal in the pub was wonderful plus Bernie and his wife Kath came around to all the patrons and had an unhurried chat about this and that. Such great hospitality.

If you were to nit pick the beautiful rooms were on the smaller side but that didn't both us at all. Parao is outside Greymouth - it would be a very long walk.

This accommodation was our favourite by far on our trip from the top of the North Is through to Queenstown in the South Island. We arrived late ( 9pm) due to the ferry from Wellington into Picton being delayed by 4hrs with a very tired toddler & had not found any food places open at that time as we drove through Greymouth. Arrived at the Paroa & Allan, the manager, arranged for the kitchen ( which had closed) to make us some delicious pizzas. He was an absolute godsend & so helpful. Our 2 bedroom unit was just lovely with very comfy King beds & had been stylishly refurbed 👌 Breakfast in the restaurant the next morning was 10/10. All the staff could not have been more pleasant or helpful. 100% recommend this little gem of a place to stay ✨️

Just perfect. This place gave me the best hotel experience during my NZ trip. The location is perfect-just three minute s away from the beautiful beach, where we appreciated our last sunset in NZ (we leave the next day). The equipment is new. The hotel staff are amazing. The Monk family have managed the hotel since 1959, so they really know the stuff and love their home. I’m recommendations this place to everyone who plans to spend some time in Greymouth.

We were warmly greeted by staff and one of the owners, Bernie. He was exceptionally helpful ensuring we were comfortable in our room, showing us where everything was and telling us about things to see in the area. Our motel suite was great - spacious, comfortable and clean. The kitchen was very well equipped with everything in working order. The bathroom appeared to have been very recently renovated. The terrace overlooking the beautiful garden was also great. It was a short walk (along a path that runs alongside the property) to the beach where the sunset can be seen. Parking for each motel room provides easy access with bags. Finally, the restaurant is fantastic. Easily the best meal we have had in New Zealand so far…. The freshest of seafood but a very extensive menu giving excellent options for all. All in all, a great place to stay!

Nothing, everything was great.

motel units were large and well appointed. Had a laundry with a reasonable charge which was great. About 8 kms out of Greymouth but on the main road and fine if you have a car. Great location, we loved facing the lawn and beach. The lack of a proper reception area was confusing and not a good introduction...we had to wander around through the bar to find someone. This detracted from our initial impression. The restaurnt was disappointng...big city prices for very ordinary food and presentation.
