Very friendly owners who made us feel welcome. All the staff were helpful and cheerful. Couldn't fault the food. Had dinner from a varied and reasonably priced menu. Can recommend the steak pie made with their own ale. The full English breakfast was one of the best I have had. My husband was very impressed with their beer . It's a lovely pub with a nice atmosphere and we left wishing they were closer to us!

We struggled with the shower cubicle in our room as it was a very high step up and we both have mobility issues

The location was a nice walk into the main town which meant it was quiet but easy to access the bus station, shops & pubs 🤗 It was handy to get a parking space & we could see our car from the room. It was handy to go to a train station (where my husband dropped me off the day we left) then I got the train to Manchester to catch a flight. Lovely area & something for everyone..

The croon is starting to look a little tired in places so maybe 🤔 have a look at a little update where needed.

The room was quiet for a busy pub. Service was efficient even when busy. The choice of food was good and well presented. The beer was good, and with on-site micro brewery, you could choose their own or other brands. Whilst the bedroom was not the largest provided all that was required and the ensuite shower was good with toilettes provided. Comfortable bed. The breakfast provided a good choice

Our only criticism was at breakfast, and the service was slow but could not complain what was on offer.

Meet and Greet was spot on , shown to room . Any other bits fully explained. Breakfast was lovely and I must comment the bacon lovely. The food on the evening was fresh and tasty. I also enjoy a nice Ale and this place brews their own beer, Plenty of choice of fine ales (and wine, have to keep the wife happy). Overall prices were good for everything. location only a few minutes walk from the town and the football ground next door. Nice walks in the area without using your car.

We only had 2 nights and wish it was 2 weeks.

Such an exceptional place to stay , the warmest of welcomes , accommodation was clean , spacious and comfortable. The breakfast was exceptional, with a gluten free option 👌, the restaurant was exceptional , high quality food , fresh homemade food , again plenty of gluten free options , although myself unable to try the old moot ales , I can say the delicate differences in the aromas, lead me to believe a taste not to be missed , will definitely be returning x

Good Breakfast. Located on a road junction but that wasn’t a problem and I’m a light sleeper. They brew their own Beer (Moot Ales) which is next door. I had the Blonde beer which was great. Locals drink here too. Which to my mind is a good recommendation. TV worked fine in bedroom and car parking on site. Evening meals were well cooked and of good quality. I had a chicken dish which was great. We will be back.

The breakfast was probably the best I have had. Breakfast is breakfast surely but the Red Lion got the basics right. Quality ingredients, freshly cooked served piping hot. Simple so why can't everyone do this? The pub itself was well stocked with a variety of drinks for everyone, quality wine, beers and spirits. Family and dog friendly environment, superb bathroom and excellent restaurant menu. The place to stay in Matlock.

This is a very popular pub with a busy bar area. The staff are first class - very friendly and helpful. Our room was at the back so there was no traffic noise but in any case the windows were well double glazed. Our room was not over large but was comfortable and included tea & coffee facilities and a hairdryer. The en-suite was spotlessly clean and well appointed and was always nice and warm. We had dinner on our first evening which was home made, the smoked mackerel pate was very good as were the meatballs and my husband said the chicken & leek pie was very good. The beers from the micro brewery next door were also very good though I preferred the Bakewell tart gin! There is lots to do in the area including plenty of nice walks and a trip to Buxton is recommended.

As the room was not over large there was only one chair to relax in to watch TV but there were always plenty down in the lounge area of the bar if sitting on the bed was not very comfortable. There was no fresh fruit at breakfast which would have been nice. The car park is quite small so it may be hard to get a space in the summer, though as we went in March it wasn't a problem.

The location was superb, the staff were incredible, so very enthusiastic to ensure our stay was the best it could be, even upgraded us without asking, and then were thrilled to share with us the upgraded bathroom and the big bedroom, their positive energy about the place was infectious.

Only tiny mention is that the breakfast is an area that could be improved upon, although it didn't affect my opinion of the place. Just a suggestion, perhaps using local produce and cooking it in a way that looked more appealing, just to take it up a level from an average English breakfast. There was nothing wrong with it at all it was pleasant, but could have looked and tasted less 'average' and more special than it did, particularly as the staff are so superb and so motivated.

The accommodation, comfy bed, the staff, very relaxed atmosphere, very good ales, food was excellent...and we're coming back to see Denise, the banter was great. We loved Matlock itself too.

There was nothing we didn't like, although did struggle with unlocking and locking the door to our room until we got the hang if it lol...
