The Goddard Arms

The hotel is a historic old inn ideally situated in the Old Town. It is tastefully furnished in a traditional style (ie not spoilt with inappropriate modern decor) with several pleasant dining areas. We particularly liked the old black-and-white framed photos depicting local scenes from a bygone age. Evening meal was exceptionally good and breakfast was adequate. Staff were attentive and efficient in spite of a very full house.

Unfortunately we were woken twice during the early hours by noisy neighbours talking loudly and banging their door opposite. However, this is no reflection on the hotel, just a fact of life.

Clean spacious single room. Zero pub noise and quiet road noise when windows were closed. Lovely warm room (March stay so still a bit nippy in the eves). Breakfast was eggs bene day 1 (with bacon) and day 2 was a generous fruit bowl of apple, strawberry & orange slices & crunchy nut cornflakes. Accommodated my 2 cappuccino breakfast request each day too. Staff lovely and although was missing towel set when I got there, was sorted within 5 mins of me notifying them. Lovely spacious pub downstairs to relax in the evening and had a delicious lamb shank from there. Going back in a couple of weeks for my next 3 day course at core elements and will be happy to work through more of their menu knowing that I'm gonna have another lush stay. Little gem and so reasonably priced too!

The only this is after staying there 2 days, the mattress was a little softer than I'd like. But everything else is brill 😃

The room was very basic but that reflects the price. Bed was very comfy. I was upgraded to a double bedroom which I thought was a lovely touch. The staff were welcoming and the breakfast on that Easter Monday was AMAZING! I had a full Breakfast and it’s the best breakfast I’ve had in ages and I have many. I would def stay here again and believe it was value for money. I even ordered another latte and wanted to pay but they said you were a hotel guest it was included in price. This is great customer service keep this up, things like this really impress me. I’ll be back loved it here.

The coffee machine in bed 10 does not work I tried it 3 times. If I had to make another moan , the noise from the extractor fans outside the room were so annoying and kept me awake but I managed to get off to sleep eventually.

Could not fault the breakfast, had the large full English on the first day. Since we had arranged to have Sunday lunch with friends, I wisely decided to have the regular full English on our last day there. Could not complain about the food or the service and the friendly staff.

Didn't realise that it really is a party hot spot in the evening. Made it extremely hard to get a drink and Nigh on impossible to get a table. So we ate out instead. Other thing I didn't realise that no children allowed after 7pm. Our youngest grandson arrived with his dad and we had to go up to our room. Otherwise they would of had to go home.

Booked this at a fairly low cost, not expecting much, being over a popular bar on a Friday night. However the room was pretty quiet, it was only a single, but was big enough for what I wanted, the bed was comfortable and the bathroom was well appointed, modern and clean. Breakfast was reasonable.

The only couple of things that I felt let it down slightly, if I was being really critical 1.) I'd prefer to have self service for the continental, rather than asking for a bowl of cereal etc. I'd prefer to help myself. 2.) The breakfast waiting staff was not very smiley. Friendly enough, but not really service with a smile.

The breakfast was exceptional fresh, hot and very tasty. The room was clean and comfy. Staff are very friendly and accommodating. Had food and drinks in the pub and the service was great and the food was tasty

The noise was a little bit loud due to the ventilation noise from the kitchen right outside the room. The ceiling in the bedroom had a water stain which could have been painted over. Round the bath was black although clean could have done with a tidy up

Very friendly staff who made us all feel welcome. Meals were good though there were a few items missing (Bank Holiday / national shortages?) A pleasant room and facilities though a little gloomy. Brilliant shower. Perfect situation for us as just up the road from a lovely area of parkland which staff directed us to. Liked the Old Town vibe.

Bedside lights could be brighter and decor less 'grey' but nothing to spoil the stay.

The assistant manager met us to book us in for our room. We found him very helpful and informative. The position of the Goddard Arms is excellent. The breakfast was to a good standard.

Although the room was warm, clean and comfortable it was very stuffy. We could not open any of the windows to obtain even a small amount of fresh air. Please be aware that the position of the pub is near the main street and can be a little noisy at times. There was a very long wait for breakfast but this was probably due to lack of staff.

Comfy beds,super clean,tea,milk,coffee machine,biscuits,hair dryer,iron ironing board in room. Excellent service from staff. Superb value breakfast when booked as a package ,on line. Free,safe , CCTV monitored parking

Some rooms have road noise,others may have low hum from either generator ,freezer unit or similar.depends on ears sensitivity. Parking sometimes difficult until pub empties later in evening.

Our room was fabulous, food is great although a shortage of supplies did limit it a wee bit, it was still great. Staff are so freindly and helpful. Breakfast was well made and hot (except the benas, but that is common).

a couple of Disabled parking bays would be useful as this hotel only has one and we had to get a works van to move out and take some abuse. Maybe another one would be helpful or a larger bay for vans?
