General Palmer Hotel

Excellent location next to the steam railway depot - and that is a ride worth travelling from far to enjoy. Although not part of the hotel, there is an excellent Italian restaurant under the detached block of rooms.

On arrival we were charged a curious $15 each "service fee" for booking on this site, not properly explained after. Evening's staff arrogant and unhelpful. Our room is in a detached block with only steep step access. The view from the room that we paid extra for turned out to be into the branches of a tree. Noise through the night from a ridiculous ice machine in the corridor.

Wonderful old hotel. Excellent 2nd floor room overlooking Main Ave but no intrusive noises. Very clean. As close as you can get for train and restaurants and shopping. Plentiful free parking. Elevator is archaic but part of the charm of this old hotel. Endless fresh coffee in the lobby. Great place to sit and reflect on the day. Breakfast is a waffle or some type of frittata and salsa and fruit. Also biscuits and gravy..very bland. Staff are great.

Elevator is a pita to enter and exit. No grab bars in the shower tub. Concerning for those who are not steady on their feet.

The hotel is right in Main street, within a quick walk to the train, restaurants, bars, and shops. My wife thought the train whistles were romantic and nostalgic. It has all the charm of an old Victorian hotel with a new comfy bed, and newly remodeled shower. Contrary to reviews that worried me, they now have mini split quiet air conditioners/heaters in the rooms as of this summer. There is a continental breakfast with omelets and empanada style pastries for a quick bite. It wasn't gourmet, but not bad, and free. Overall, a great stay.

I would recommend a sleeping mask, because the rooms let in light. I think the hotel should switch to unscented detergent. It wasn't strong, but there was a somewhat fruity smell to the sheets that I didn't care for.

The hotel was in a great location. The train, shops and restaurants were all within walking distance. The bed was comfortable, and the room was clean. We had an interior room, it was bit different not having a window. We got some really great pictures on the train to Silverton.

We were surprised to find out there was an addition $15 charge at check in. It was for parking, Wi-Fi and breakfast. Make sure to get down to breakfast early, the eggs dish seamed to over cooked the later you got to the breakfast station.

Everything!! The location is perfect for exploring historic Durango. The room was so quaint. The room had everything you could need for your stay, and the bathrobes were a nice touch. And to top it off, the employees were all so nice and helpful. Luke greeted us when we checked in and gave a great recommendation for dinner. The manger, Danica upgraded our room and offered to take our luggage to the room when she saw that my husband's hand was bandaged. Caleb greeted us the next morning at checkout and was just as friendly as Luke and Danica. We will definitely stay here again next time we visit Durango!

The hotel has the best location of any hotel in Durango, very convenient. It is right next to the train depot so you can watch the trains leaving and coming in. Breakfast was excellent, unique little omelettes. Eggs could have been hotter. This is a charming old hotel with lots of cute areas to sit and read if you wanted to. We would definitely stay here again.

The bed was a little mushy soft for us. The bathroom had a jacuzzi tub which was also the shower, it was a little difficult to get into it to take a shower.

Classy! High quality hot dishes and good pastries in quaint setting. Small but perfect selection. Good coffee and hot tea available throughout the hotel.

Our room smelled like a hundred year-old dentist office, thankfully we had plenty of windows to let fresh air in. The antique elevator was so cool but hard to work with my family and suitcases. These are just natural features of the historic building and the location and hospitality (choc chip cookies) more than made up for it! Awesome place!

Great location and lots of character in this heritage building. Nice touches like a plug in heater/fan, big bathrobes, and a CD player with classical Cd's in the room to set the "antique" atmosphere. The bed and pillows were comfy and the room was quiet, quaint and cosy. The sunroom hallway downstairs was a nice place to eat in the morning.

The room has few surfaces for organizing your stuff, and no hooks due to the wallpaper, so as a traveler with lots of toiletries and backpacks it was a little tight! The complimentary breakfast was limited/too sugary for my liking - mostly sweet packaged muffins and flavored yogurts. Some plain yogurts or hard boiled eggs would be a nice addition. There was one plain oatmeal option which we appreciated.

Location of hotel is exceptional. Hotel is very clean and staff exceptionally helpful. We were told we had to pay an additional $15 fee for wifi and breakfast, but no big deal.

No elevator to rooms in annex. Pretty steep stairs, but I knew that ahead of trip. We had a 2 bedroom suite with a sitting room, but was really a sitting room with double bed, and one real bedroom. We made due. The cooling system did not work very well and stayed warm in the front part of the suite.

Location was excellent especially for the train. Overall mundane value. Very nice staff. Historic property nicely preserved and generally appropriately updated. Riding the antique style tiny elevator shoehorned into what seemed former closet space was actually fun though a bit of a challenge with luggage. No bellman to assist seniors. For what was charged the room was nice but poorly lighted in the dressing area. Felt like candlelight. Lighted makeup mirror in the closet helped with that. Comfy bed good pillows. Paper products thin and rough. Breakfast was self serve instant oatmeal, doughy chewy third rate grocery pastry, bananas and apples, packaged yogurt, coffee and instant apple cider. Not awful. It would have equalled what you get at Motel 6. For a joint like the General Palmer, it was very disappointing.

The breakfast though minamilis could have been vastly improved with a toaster for bread and bagels and a microwave to heat bacon or sausage. The cheap eats seriously detracted from the value given.
