the guest house is in a very quiet hill-side neighborhood. it's about a 15 minute scenic walk from the ferry that goes along the river shore, small shops, park, and shrine that everyone comes to see. We had a room in the second floor with a small sitting deck, and view of the river. The garden next to the common room had several deer that we watched. it really gave us a chance to slow down after running around Tokyo and Kyoto. As a side note, we lost all our yen (50,000) in an envelope somewhere in Hiroshima the day before. The guest house staff (Mr. Terazawa) was incredibly kind to call all the places we had been to since we didn't speak Japanese. He found that our envelope was at the bakery we stopped at previously and we were able to retrieve it successfully. He even gave us his personal number just in case. we are so grateful for his help and hopes he has a chance to visit Hawaii.

I felt very cozy and comfortable here! The layout and amenities provided were well thought out - I had everything I needed, when I needed it. The front lobby has a small lounge which I enjoyed using to eat breakfast or to relax. The laundry room and shower room worked well. They have an app to see whether the showers/laundry are in use, before you go there, which was helpful. Lots of spaces available in the women's washroom to dry your hair etc, and the space was nice. I also felt very safe - 24h front desk, phones to contact the front desk on each level, emergency buttons in the bathrooms etc, and keycards restrict you to the locations where you are permitted to go. As someone travelling alone, it really made me feel safe and comfortable. The staff were always friendly and helpful with anything I needed! Great location - steps from a subway line, a short walk from a train line, and easily walkable (albeit a longer walk) to Gion, restaurants, etc. I would definitely stay here again!
Perhaps it would be nice if the bathrooms were cleaned slightly more frequently. Staff did an excellent job when they cleaned them - and the staff are busy, they are constantly working, so not their fault. Just sometimes the towels etc would pile up, or if a guest made a mess, it might be a little while before the next cleaning. Overall it was very clean though and did not negatively impact my stay!

Great location. Close to a metro station, all sorts of buses, bars&restaurants and the main shopping area. - Clean, modern and overall an interesting experience. - Security with a badge system, interesting 'breakfast at a nearby restaurant' system. - Very clean and easy-to-use shower rooms (on 1 floor) and toilets (on each floor) with real-time cabin availability that can be checked online.
Everything is done automatically - checkin, checkout, baggage storage, etc., and can lack some 'human touch' but this is maybe Japan today. - Free coffee/tea in the lobby or floor level would have been much appreciated. - Room almost full with bunk beds and the side alley, where we would open suitcases, was very narrow and the lack of space was felt. - Some guests were quite loud in the hallway and given the proximity of some beds to the hall, it was annoying. - There was not enough self baggage storage space (wires) and we had to leave some luggage non-attached. I find it scandalous to have to pay for baggage kept after checkout.

Very good for the price, room was small but comfortable and there was enough room to keep my luggage open. Shower rooms were very nice and clean. Staff was friendly.
The air vent in my room was extremely loud - I’m very sensitive to noises but I think it would bother even the average person. The breakfast was provided by a nearby restaurant and there was no vegetarian option.

The Pocket Hotel in Kyoto offers an unbeatable price, making it one of the most budget-friendly accommodations in the city. The value for money is exceptional, especially considering the hotel's cleanliness, which is truly impeccable. Despite the small size, the 7 square meter room for two people feels surprisingly spacious and not at all claustrophobic, which exceeded my expectations. The hotel's location is another major advantage, being conveniently situated for exploring Kyoto. Overall, the Pocket Hotel is an excellent choice for budget-conscious travelers looking for a clean, well-located, and efficient place to stay in Kyoto.
While the Pocket Hotel is perfect for short stays, it might not be the best option for longer trips. The compact size and minimal amenities could feel limiting after several days.

Really good value for an amazing location. Communal bathrooms are very clean with all of the facilities you need including cotton buds, toothbrush/toothpaste, hairdryers and even face wash. You are also able to get a lot of privacy in your own shower booth. Lobby is a nice communal area where many guests lounge with couches, work counter, TV and drinking water + a vending machine for those who want other drinks.
Spending more than five days here/more time in the room may be depressing as the rooms are very very small with only space for the bed and a bit of ground to put your suitcase. The laundry machines (400 yen for washing + drying) did not dry my clothes very efficiently.

the perfect for a short trip, close to the train station and Kyoto station, accessible with elevator. close to kawaramachi and a coin laundry. a lot of restaurant opened late when we come back late from our trip. checking in and out very easy. if you are sharing a room with a friend you can check out earlier or later than your friend without difficulties.
some rude visitors dont respect the minimal rules like not listening to music on speaker in shared places and not cleaning after them after making a mess in the bathroom... the thing to ventilated your room isn't really working well...

Room was compact but clean, comfortable and quiet. I liked that there was a QR code you could use to check occupancy levels of showers and availability of washing machines. Also appreciated the pyjamas for guests to borrow. Lobby area was nice enough, and staff were friendly and helpful. Best aspect for me was probably the location: subway station right outside, just one stop from the main station, several restaurants just a few metres away, a 7/11 across the street, and reasonable walking distance from lots of things I wanted to see and do!
Unfortunately I couldn't get a room on the women-only floor so had to get the lift 3 floors to the women's bathroom, and the showers always seemed to be busy whenever I wanted to use them (and during high-traffic times were not particularly clean).

Check in and check out was very easy and you can definitely come earlier and rest in the lounge (which has Wifi, hot water, microwave, restroom) while waiting for the 3PM check in time. I felt safe/secure staying here despite having to go to a different floor to wash up since your room card was your key to getting to the restroom and shower rooms (similar to a college dorm lifestyle). Only those with a room key card can travel to the other floors. Pajamas and slippers were accessible in the first floor lounge/lobby, toothbrush/toothpaste are provided in the restrooms, and the shower had citrus scented body soap and shampoo. Air conditioning was strong and I liked the lamps/outlets near our beds (which is futon-style and can be folded up if you needed to use the table and floor mats for seating). There are several restaurants right next to the hotel including Mcdonalds, yakisoba, and Japanese curry. There is a train station on the corner of the block. Overall, this was an inexpensive hotel to stay at with just the necessities. For $35-40 a night, my friend and I can't really complain!
Unfortunately, there was no television in our room but this was not a huge issue for us since we only stayed in our room to sleep. If you leave your card/key in the room, you would have to call the staff to get back in (there are phones in the hallway of each floor that connect you to the hotel staff). No hair conditioner was provided in the shower rooms so you would have to bring that. The rooms are indeed quite small so it would be difficult to open more than 1 suitcase in the room.

Super close to the metro, a Macdonald's and a conbini so very easy to set yourself up. The lack of toilets in the room were not an issue as toilets were on the same floor. The room was small but no smaller than typical in Japan and there is space under the bedroom store luggage.
There are two different pocket hotels!! I walked into the wrong one as in Google maps it was the only one with the name in english. Oops! This hotel is in Google as THE POCKET HOTEL 京都烏丸五条. Make sure you go to the right one. The shower is on a different floor but this is a cubicle room so actually very private. No housekeeping unless requested could be an issue for someone but I don't tend to have rubbish in my room so it wasn't a problem for me.
