This is probably the closest hotel to the temples but a 10 minute cab ride from the station. It is a historic landmark being the oldest western style hotel in Japan and the walls are decorated with photos of past guests (Ulysses S Grant, Indira Gandhi, Eisenhower). In consequence, it's a rabbit warren of corridors and levels. I requested a quiet room with an open view and that is exactly what I got. It was in a connected annex maybe some 40 years old, but perfect for a quiet stay. The room was very large, with unusually a full length bath, and a Nespresso machine. The bar is very very atmospheric and has a massive selection of whiskies (Scotch and Japanese). Breakfast is available as either Japanese or Western. The latter is extremely well done and very welcome.

A large newer (though still old) part of the hotel is being extensively renovated. I cannot speak to how it will reappear but this being Japan all the work is conducted almost silently! The restaurant is mostly set meals and quite expensive. The nearest restaurants close early and are quite specialised except for a very good pizza lunch restaurant up the road near the Imperial Villa. In addition the cottage branch of the hotel in a similar location offers a good range of light lunches.

The location was great, the view was very satisfying, the room was so elegant and comfortable complete with old world charm. I enjoyed the gift shop and bakery, the staff were helpful and sweet.

The food could be better. After a day of hiking would have liked something more fulfilling. Fine French cuisine in tiny portion didn't hit the spot. And not sure I enjoyed the mostly fish option. The salmon was nice but the other one really was not. The fish was full of fine, hard to remove bones, the sauce was sweet - just not good. And the menu had just 2 options. I stayed for 4 days. Would have liked more options. I am Muslim and don't eat pork so felt the menu was limited.

Beautiful location to visit Toshogu shrine and other parts of Nikko. Although it's historical hotel with rich stories over 150 years, the room we stayed was annex which is recently renovated keeping its original ambience but functional modern equipement. Ceiling height is quite high and room is quite spacious. Hospitality and service quality is guaranteed with convenient location, 10mn from Tobu Nikko station by either taxi or hotel shuttle bus. Since they have 3 hotels in Nikko area, I would try another 2 equipped Onsen, hot spring, probably Chuzenji one located lake sure.

Not particular one.

The room was huge and the view was perfect. It's a really nice historical hotel. The staff were extremely helpful and kind. We each got a free bottle of mineral water every day.

The entrance to the hotel requires you to climb up a hill. Could be challenging to older people. The entire interior is covered in wall to wall carpeting - this made the air a bit stuffy. The AC was a bit of a nightmare. At night it gives quite a light show and it was a bit noisy. Never cold enough but sometimes freezing. It required a lot of handling with the user of Google translate camera. Not enough power outlets. Breakfast was lovely but pretty basic and outrageously expensive for Japan.

Location was great, and reading about the history of the hotel was fascinating. They even have a little display building of the history. Staff are excellent and breakfast was lovely.

I would say that as it is an old hotel, there are definitely some repairs needed to bring it back up to standard. Little things like cracked plaster peeling from the roof etc. and just that "worn" look of the hotel. Didn't bother me that much but you just notice it everywhere within the hotel...

The staff at the hotel were amazing. Chasing after us to give us complimentary umbrellas in the rain, sending on my son's plushy toy to our next hotel when it caught up in the bedclothes. The staff spoke good English and were very patient, accommodating, kind and sincere. The hotel is very grand and exceptionally close to the Tonogawa shrine, but the hotel staff are what made this hotel exceptional for us.

To be honest there was not really anything to dislike.

This is a charming hotel with a fascinating history. It feels very special to be in residence. The room was very spacious, with older style but extremely comfortable furnishings. The view was superb from our window, and it’s right next door to the wonderful temple complex. The face lotions supplied were lovely. Dinner was delicious and beautifully presented French food, worth the fairly high price tag.

We wouldn’t change anything!

Fantastic location: walking distance from the historical sights of Nikko, the Emperor's villa and close to nature for very nice walks. Staff is very nice and extremely helpful (even in French!). The hotel is a very old hotel packed with charm of another century. A truly great experience.

While very clean, the rooms are a bit tired. However the atmosphere and the quality of the staff largely compensated for that!

Excellent customer service & hospitality! Delicious in-house bakery, beautifully preserved historic hotel with interesting exhibits, classical fine dining restaurant with great food, view, & decor, beautiful garden and walking path along the river, when I wanted to go to an onsen for an evening soak the front desk staff went out of her way to help me book a reservation close by, easy to communicate in with English, close to Shinkyo Bridge, Toshogu Temple, and the main thoroughfare with shops and restaurants. This is a special hotel and the people who work here are equally special, taking pride and great care in what they do.

Although we’ll persevered, some areas of the hotel seemingly need an upgrade, guess that’s hard to do at a historic hotel trying to preserve their facilities. Beds were a bit stiff and uncomfortable, but it seems like many hotels have similar issue los as Japan is originally a futon culture. Room slippers were too small for my big feet, lol. No onsen bath on site.

This property reminded us of an old national park hotel in the U.S. We enjoyed the trail with the provided walking sticks down to the river. The location to historic temples and shrines and the access to the commercial areas on either side, as well as to the local bus stop that takes you up to the lake and waterfall could not be better. The staff is lovely and and provide top notch service. The service at breakfast and dinner as well as the delicious multi course meals help you relax and enjoy the beauty of this special place.
