The hotel has a Jacuzzi mineral bath and pool. It is next to the Government Garden and the beach. The room and bathroom is spacious and comfy. The breakfast has hot meals, cereals and fruits. The laundry room is in the back.

There is no safety lock on hotel side door. Anyone could enter the hotel from the parking lot. There is also no safe in the hotel room to store valuables.

Hotel has lots of character; small hot pool was nice; room was relatively spacious; shower had good pressure and bed was decently comfortable. Staff were helpful. Location is great, near the water and government park, easy walk to lots of restaurants and cafes, half a block from the info centre which is where the InterCity bus stops.

It's not a particularly secure hotel or room: the room door locks with a push button and opens with a key. The window opens onto a balcony which is how other guests access their rooms, so my room didn't feel very private, and it wasn't at all sound proof.

Location, room, room size, pools, close to venue we were there for., plenty of parking.

Only one fan between two bedrooms, air con didn't reach to rooms. Very patchy wifi, just ended up using personal data. Biggest letdown was the on-site restaurant, so many things weren't available, my fiancee got charged $76 for a $46 total,, eventually got refunded, and the breakfast food wasn't topped up. Would not eat here again due to the poor service. The accommodation part is great, the restaurant is a hard avoid.

Very handy for the InterCity bus stop, Government gardens and lake. Loved the choices for breakfast (especially Eggs Benedict with salmon, and Avocado smash) and the extensive dinner menu with interesting fish dishes. The staff were all friendly and helpful, particularly Michelle on reception who went well "over and above" to help me in any way she could. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay.

The only issue (though no doubt unavoidable due to the age of the building) was the hot water pipes running through the room which made it very warm, especially at night. As I prefer a cool room for sleeping, I had to run the aircon all night to keep it comfortable.

I loved the old-fashioned look and accessing the room via the balcony. The lobby was also gorgeous and everything was comfortable. The location is great, right next to sulphur point and the Polynesian spa and not far from the restaurants. It was wonderful to have a nightcap in the sofas downstairs and the bar staff were super.

The rooms were decorated in a classic style, which was lovely, but all the carpeting and heavy drapes made it a bit stuffy. The person manning the front desk when we went out for dinner was not helpful in finding us a taxi - we ordered one from another hotel nearby!

I would like to share my wonderful experience at this hotel, and I'd like to extend special thanks to one staff member, Star. Due to our limited English proficiency, Star went above and beyond to help us numerous times, making our stay more enjoyable and seamless. Star consistently greeted us with a smile and a warm attitude. Whenever we encountered any issues or needed assistance, she patiently addressed our concerns and provided incredibly helpful suggestions. Her professionalism and genuine concern for guests made us feel right at home. Not only does this hotel boast an elegant environment and attentive service, but the enthusiastic assistance from staff members like Star left a lasting impression on us. Once again, a big thank you to Star and the entire hotel team. We look forward to staying here again and creating more wonderful memories.

We stayed in a 2-bedroom apartment and were surprised how spacious it was. It looked like it had been recently painted with new carpets and curtains. We chose this hotel for its retro charm, and it didn’t disappoint. The apartment itself also had some retro elements. The beds were comfortable, the bathroom spacious with a big bathtub and shower. There was a cosy living room and a small kitchenette. The hotel hot pool is popular and nicely set in the patio area. We enjoyed the breakfast, too, and thought it was reasonably priced.

The WiFi was a little weak in our apartment. The restaurant and bar closes at 9pm on the weekend. It would be nice to be able to enjoy the cosy 2 fireplaces with a glass of wine for a little longer.

The hotel's location is exceptional - it's a 5 minute walk from the bus station and tourist center ( which offers excellent shuttle tours of major sites), a 10 minute walk from the Polynesian Spa, Eat Street and other downtown attractions. The historic nature of the hotel is well maintained with a lovely lobby and spacious rooms that open to a veranda. The staff are friendly and helpful - Nia, in particular, - a superstar! For example, she offered to give me a ride to the spa when she clocked out due to inclement weather!

When I arrived, the room I checked into bathroom's toilet was not flushing properly and it was suggested I use the public restroom until the following morning when it could be fixed! Not acceptable for a 70 year old woman! After a brief exchange, I was moved to another room which was wonderful. The food served from restaurant is not great - not bad- but could use some improvement.

Historic hotel building right next to Government Gardens, Polynesian Spa and waterfront. Downtown shops and restaurants a short walk. Hotel rooms and lobby have a lot of Gold Rush era charm, with a nice surrounding outside wooden terrace from which most rooms are accessed. We stayed there four nights over the Easter holidays and thoroughly enjoyed our time there.

Some of the rooms have been recently renovated, but not all, resulting in a bit of variation in comfort level even within the same room category (Estate Room). Don't expect too much from the adjacent Duke's Bar & Restaurant, although High Tea there is a worthwhile afternoon treat.

If you’re traveling by Intercity bus in New Zealand, this hotel is within site of the bus terminal. It’s also very close to the lake and a beautiful park. I was surprised to be in a room that was not in the historical hotel but in an adjacent apartment style accommodation. It was adequate but definitely showed its age but not in a quaint way. The laundry room was appreciated for self service. The high tea was ok but didn’t seem as freshly prepared. Staff were very professional and friendly.
