Standard of cleanliness in the room and bathroom, as well as the hotel in general, is exceptional. Very comfortable and quiet. Staff very friendly and helpful. We have used this hotel for several years and would not stay anywhere else when we visit family in Devon.

On our last stay, we are sad to say that the standard of the buffet breakfast was below what we would expect from this hotel. The selection of cooked breakfast items was sadly lacking on both mornings. We arrived in the restaurant to find that the buffet had run out of several items of hot food and there was a wait whilst these were replenished. We had to supplement our breakfast with items from the continental selection.

In the grounds of Buckfast Abbey, this was the best place we stayed in our trip round the West Country. The location was amazing, and an early morning walk through the lavender-scented gardens and silent Abbey was truly wonderful. Our twin room was a good size, with a large bathroom and excellent shower. Even though we were close to the restaurant, it was quiet and had plenty of plugs. Breakfast was good for meat-eaters but trickier for dietary requirements. We did eventually get vegan sausages and dairy-free milk. It was busy so things kept running out; we had to wait for bread and plates. Dinner was tasty, although a little expensive. I would stay again.

Special dietary requirements seemed surprising to staff and took some time and effort to satisfy (I had asked in advance as well).

The accommodation is set in a very quiet area with a lovely back drop overlooking Buckfast abbey. Our room was very well presented with everything we needed for a comfortable stay. The buffet style breakfast was great,so you helped yourself to everything you wanted, with quality products provided, again set in a lovely large dining area.Within a short distance by foot you could walk around the abbey and gardens, but also during the daytime the grange restaurant set in the grounds of the abbey provided a wide menu range with a large indoor and outdoor area to relax and eat.

Only one slightly annoying problem was parking. With the amount of rooms in Northgate house you would think there was enough parking space, but the problem I encountered was with other customers not parking correctly so they took up more space than needed, this could be rectified by painting white lines on the tarmac to define bays, and also have a separate small area for motorcyclists as two were parked up one night on our stay and they took over two car spaces. I ended up parking in a disabled bay after talking to management of the hotel.

The hotel is in a beautiful, peaceful setting with ample parking available. The hotel staff were very polite and helpful and we felt very welcome on arrival. Our large room was very clean with a comfy bed and seating area. There was ample storage in the room and a large clean bathroom with both a shower and bath. The breakfast was tasty and cooked nicely. Self service arrangements for breakfast were good. The restaurant staff were efficient, polite, friendly and worked very hard. The evening restaurant food was great with a varied dinner menu. There are also other facilities for meals on the site. The Grange cafe serving meals and snacks during the day and a pizza restaurant open in the evening. It was nice to be able to visit the Abbey and grounds and browse in the gift shop too.

If possible more staff need to be available during busier periods so that service is quicker. The restaurant was quite echoey and noisy at times making it difficult to hold a conversation. Especially whilst sitting beneath the glass roof.

Clean, peaceful, well designed rooms around a simple courtyard with a fountain. Large windows with Juliet balconies to upstairs rooms. Staff all seemed cheerful and willing to give directions and offer local knowledge. The site is adjacent to the Abbey where we were able to attend a high quality concert one evening and generally use the gardens. Very easy to travel around the area as quite close to the A38 but you do not hear the road noise at all.

Would have preferred a king size bed, the rooms are easily big enough for this but seem to contain ordinary doubles. Coffee at breakfast comes from a stale vacuum flask. This could surely be easily replaced with a filter machine?

Breakfast was well presented and delicious, Could not fault this. Room was spacious and clean.

Dinner , I had the steak which was cooked just as I like it, Would like it if they offered more of a sauce range ie Diane, Mushroom or Red Wine as I did not like the ones listed. Also was not impressed with a whole red onion, Onion rings would be better. Left Salad as it was smothered in dressing. The only minor faults were no air con , so had to have window open and then we heard everything outside in the early hours and deliveries . Would be better if there was a fridge in the room to keep water cold.

The overall quality of the hotel. The cleanliness. The professional, helpful, friendly, staff. The magnificent grounds and setting, The excellent breakfasts. The location for access to surrounding places of interest.

Difficult to dislike anything however we found the evening meal menu didn't suit our tastes so had to eat out. We would have preferred some more traditional, simple options, available. Also we were there when it was really hot and despite the availability of a fan the room (114) was uncomfortably warm at times.

The hotel is light, airy and modern, exceptionally well maintained and immaculately clean with lovely views of the abbey. The rooms are kept to the same high standard, spacious and well appointed. Check in was efficiently handled in a matter of minutes of arrival following a warm welcome. The restaurant was staffed by two lovely ladies who were so friendly and attentive and we enjoyed a delicious evening meal there.

The rooms are so spacious they could easily accommodate a king size bed which we would prefer, however the double provided in our room was super comfy and we slept well.

There is nothing we could ask for to improve our stays at Northgate House. The accommodation provides all we need and is exceptionally clean & comfortable. The staff are fantastic and the serenity of the location is unbeatable. For couples wanting a relaxing break away from the stresses of the modern world this really fits the bill! The buffet breakfast is lovely, and the evening meals are exceptional. We have been back several times in the last 2 years and will continue to do so as often as we can find an excuse to go there!

It is often fully booked so needs to be booked well in advance

We stayed here for one night when Muse were playing in Plymouth and it was perfect for us. It's well located within about 25mins of both Plymouth and Exeter, as well as about 45mins from Salcombe. It would make a good base to explore South Devon. We had a nice, clean room with a comfortable bed, plenty of tea/coffee, as well as some hot chocolate and biscuits. The staff were all really friendly. The breakfast was reasonably priced and good quality, including some massive hash browns! We'd happily stay here again in future.

The only point to note is that the rooms don't have air con but there is a fan and the windows can open very wide. This wasn't a problem for our stay but if you're there when it's in the mid or high 20s then it may be.
