This lovely old building is very conveniently located right in the centre of town at the bottom of the (very steep and narrow) high street. My room was very comfortable, with king-sized bed and good-sized en suite (shower only - worked well). It had tea and coffee-making facilities in the room, plus tv and hairdryer. The bathroom had Elemis shampoo, conditioner and body/hand lotion - much appreciated by me. Although the room overlooked the bus stop and a busy road, noise was not a problem at all. I forgot to mention the air-conditioning, which was efficient and quiet (most of the time - see below). Food was good. A good selection of items for continental breakfast plus a very good cooked menu. The bacon bap was particularly good! Dinner menu also had a good selection and the fish and chips (chunky and delicious!) were very good. Staff were very friendly, eager to help and welcoming.

There was a slight smell of drains in the bathroom.

Great location and room. Nothing was too much trouble. Good food.

We were so happy to see a no smoking section outside and it was one of the reasons we came back in the evening to eat, only to find a group of rather intimidating looking smokers there all night. We didn’t feel able to bring this up and ate indoors. There is no proper system on their computer for pricing the breakfasts. If I hadn’t queried it, I would have been charged £14 for a breakfast bap and a pot of tea. The guy at the checkout was very apologetic about it though.

Very comfortable room, with a comfortable bed and pillows. The whole place has a very "olde worlde" feel to it. The bathroom was spotlessly clean and the breakfast was surprisingly good and abundant with a good selection to choose from. The service in the restaurant was very friendly. I arrived very late and they were happy to accommodate me. The location is perfect for Totnes - very central.

Communication was definitely poor and difficult. I tried calling them several times and was only ever able to get through to the actual hotel once. I sent them several emails but they never responded. The electric shower although nice and warm, lacked proper pressure.

The History of the Place. Some areas were quite quirky and interesting - definitely not bland and boring. It had a good feeling to it. The Bed was super comfy - I didn't want to get up ! The Room was very quiet even though we were facing the Road. The Breakfast was fantastic and plentiful.

Nothing really. I would happily stay again. Maybe a Slow-Closing Toilet Seat in the Ensuite which are usually quite the norm in most places these days ? I kept forgetting it didn't have one and I'd let it Slam down noisily by mistake. But that was my fault as well.

Good central location, bus stops immediately outside hotel secondary glazing cut most vehicle noises. Rooms a good size, even if the sink was tiny. Nice choice of toiletries too. Breakfast generous, served with a smile. All the team were very friendly and helpful.

Noise transfer between bedrooms probably unavoidable given the age and build of the property. If unfortunate. I could also hear bedroom noises from the room above. They had a big function the night of my stay, dining room unable to cater for me except very early or very late, so I ate out.

Room was comfortable, well equipped and a good size for 2 people for one night. The decoration was a little 'tired' but does that really matter? Breakfast was ample and well presented (the croissants were excellent!). Dinner the night before was fish 'n chips - what else? - and it was very good indeed. Good wines, well kept.

The parking situation is tricky and needs a little pre-planning, The hotel car park is a non starter. Morrisons (pre-book on an app) is very limited and the app is terrible (no fault of the hotel). Best option is the long-stay Steamer Quay car park (8 mins walk from hotel) (free 1800hrs - 0800hrs).

If you are weary of modern hotels with sterile corridors and a manufactured heritage then you will be delighted with The Royal Seven Stars. This old coaching inn, although having undergone modest refurbishment to meet modern expectations, retains much of the quirkiness of its 17th century origins. You may find many stairs, twists and turns on the way to your room, but, if it is anything like mine, it will be larger than you expect, have a modern bathroom, a sturdy four poster bed, a large window, creaking floorboards and not a level surface anywhere: placing some oranges on the old desk/dressing table they immediately rolled to the floor. In short, this hotel has character. My room looked onto The Wills obelisk in the centre of a main road (Coronation Road) and I was initially concerned about noise at night - but the town was quiet, Coronation Road deserted and I slept undisturbed. Located at the bottom of Fore Street in the centre of Totnes, the hotel is at the heart of the community. People sitting in the outdoor area continually greeted passers-by with a warm and friendly manner that extended to me. Although a visitor to the town I never felt I was an outsider. Moreover the staff at the hotel could not have been more welcoming or helpful or efficient. The restaurant staff deserve particular praise. Hotels like the Royal Seven Stars are now few and far between. I used the hotel restaurant each evening and enjoyed my meals. I don't eat meat so the vegetarian and vegan options were welcome. Menus are on the website but be advised that the portions are large. Consequently, breakfast for me was only cereal, fresh croissant and coffee. The large bedroom, the restaurant and being in the centre of Totnes make the Royal Seven Stars an excellent place for an extended stay of several days. I travelled by public transport: the hotel is next to the main bus stops for Salcombe, Dartmouth, Kingsbridge, Paignton and Torquay while the railway station is 20 minutes...

Some paintwork could be refreshed but nothing was unacceptable. No complaints!

Good breakfast with very attentive staff. Super comfy huge bed with soft pillows and duvet. Quiet room as requested at the top of the hotel. Great location.

In their advert it stated that only a limited number of rooms were available for dog owners. This description doesn’t seem to apply now as dogs seemed to be welcome everywhere in all the rooms. We had to move to a different bar as there were five dogs and their owners making their presence known. Much as I like dogs I don’t particularly want to share my holiday accommodation with them, especially as there was a request in the bedroom not to allow dogs on the bed. Some people have genuine allergies and their health needs to be taken into consideration.

Great location. Well appointed. Great food. Huge double bed with aircon in the room. Coffee machine and kettle. Excellent tea bags! Great shower. And a fireplace in the bathroom. Quaint! Staff were fantastic. We were attending a funeral and they managed to get a room ready for us for an early arrival which we then didn’t get to as circumstances changed but they were brilliant and understood without a fuss. So helpful and accommodating. The bar and kitchen staff were great and even the house keeping staff all really pleasant and helpful. Top to bottom great service. Thank you!

Just minor issues. The toilet shower didn’t have any ventilation, and in the morning we could hear the kitchen enthusiastically pot cleaning outside from our room but that was fine. Didn’t detract from the experience and only printing this for feedback for them 😊

Just a lovely hotel, I can't fault it! So many good things about it. I love especially that you always get a mineral water in your bedroom. Everything just seems to work well, they staff are great, the pub downstairs is nice and the rooms are good. The staff let me check out a bit late and they brought me soup up to my room when I wasn't feeling great.

There are many things that could be better like anywhere, but they are my personal taste rather than an objective review! I would love a big bottle of still water in the room when I arrive rather than biscuits. Yet the biscuits are cute! I would love more soundproof rooms but it's an old building.
