Pleasantly decorated spacious and comfortable room with modern en suite, including powerful shower. Good freshly cooked breakfast. Friendly management/staff. The hotel is also has a pleasant bar. The hotel is located in a small settlement near the main A69 route between Newcastle & Carlisle, ideal for exploring the area. Short drive to Roman settlement excavation sites and Hadrian's Wall as well as Hexham, where there are several restaurants and shops.
We booked this hotel because it also had a bistro restaurant, however on arrival we found that the restaurant had been permanently closed! Whilst booking.com notified us that the name of the hotel had changed, it would have been helpful to know in advance that there was also no longer food available. Our room was not serviced during our stay, but maybe our expectations were too high for a small hotel.

Room was a good size. Reasonably clean. Pillows were not comfortable and it could have done with a comfortable chair in the room. It was very hot and the tiny fan they supplied was ineffectual. The bathroom was a joke. So tiny you could hit your head off the sink while sitting on the toilet. The shower was big enough but the shower head was so high up that few women would be tall enough to reach it and the whole bathroom was not clean. Additionally, a ridiculous arrangement of straw on the only small shelf made it unusable. Breakfast was served in the bar which naturally smelled rather strongly of beer which is not the best start to the day for some. However, the breakfast was very good and wholesome and the only staff member we spoke to was lovely. We were travelling for business but took a break to visit Hadrian's wall en route. It was very well located for that.
The bathroom was too small and dirty. I always carry detergent wipes with me which I used to clean the surfaces and the toilet still had paper lying in it. There was signs of mould in the shower and the dark tiles are not a substitute for cleaning. Could have done with better pillows and a comfortable chair in the room. Needs air conditioning or a bigger fan. A little bit noisy before midnight as the Radcliffe room looked onto the main street and the window had to remain open to ventilate. However, window were only single glazed so noise was still obvious even with windows closed. I would not return to this hotel.

All the staff were helpful and friendly and made us feel very welcome. A nice pub inside. The cooked breakfast was good with excellent quality produce, cooked beautifully; Also vegetarian and other alternatives available e.g. omlette etc. Our room and bathroom were both very clean, beds soft and comfortable, WiFi and TV both worked well. Our room had small touches such as a chocolate mint each, as well as a biscuit on the room tray. Town was very quiet at night, the church clock strikes each hour during the night but didn't disturb us. Good location, close to Hadrian's Wall and also Hexham. Nice old town, lots of history and the bridge and riverside setting is interesting too. We were offered a room upgrade on the day of our arrival.
Sadly the onsite Bistro Restaurant was not open and we were only informed of this after we had booked. Other restaurant options in the town seem a little limited, but there is a takeway fish and chip shop, so we used that and sat on a public bench by the river to eat, just a good job it wasn't raining. No onsite parking, parking is on the street and we struggled to get parked when we first arrived, but it did get quieter later in the evening. The range of beers seems a little limited, it would have been nice if there had been more local or craft beers available.

Great hostess and very comfortable room. Unfortunately the loo seat was slightly broken. We would have loved to stay there longer and have explored the area and Hadrians wall, but our schedule did not allow it. The hotel restaurant is not open any longer , but we were welcomed to eat a great pizza from the nearby fish and chip shop and were given cutlery to help. Breakfast was quite good and yet again the really friendly atmosphere generated by the hostess made the morning brighter despite the dark clouds and drizzle. All in, a very enjoyable overnight stay!
The drizzle, the broken loo seat and only having one sausage!

Great location, room was superb, and the shower was awesome. Staff could'nt do enough for you. Very welcoming and friendly. Breakfast was more than enough. Bar had a variety of beers and whiskey and warm and cozy. Although we did'nt eat our evening meal there, the menu offered was very good. Will be coming back when in Northumberland again. Also we had to make our stay shorter than anticipated due to family illness. Shannon the manager was wonderful about our sudden break in our stay and understood it was out of our control and was willing to refund the difference. 🙂. What a star.
Only thing, was breakfast served between 8-9am. If they could serve breakfast until 9 30am, that would be nice.

We were only there for one night but Shannon, the manager and Calvin, the owner were friendly and accommodating. Breakfast was great. The room was spacious enough and the shower had plenty of hot water. We paid for dinner in the evening which was excellent with South African inspired cuisine as well as the usual dining options.
There is parking immediately outside the pub (2 spaces), so somewhat limited. There is also parking around the corner but we had quite a few bags so it is possible to unload on the double yellow lines for a moment. We stopped and called about parking when we saw no spaces and Shannon thought that one of the vehicles might be moving shortly, and sure enough, it did, so we grabbed the space. Not an issue at all if one is travelling lightly!

The Railway Hotel and Bistro is a wonderfully welcoming establishment that we have visited previously and will do again. From the warm welcome on arrival, service is faultless with the staff wonderfully attentive but never instructive. our room was well appointed, spotlessly clean and offered everything we needed for our weekend away. But the best thing about the Railway Hotel is the food - a wonderfully creative menu, filled with tasty dishes ensured an amazing evening meal on both nights we were there. The amazing customer focus this place offers was summed up for me when I said I wouldn’t be there for breakfast on our first morning as I was riding the Haydon Hundred only to be offered a packed lunch to take with me - a truly lovely gesture that was greatly appreciated!

The room was very clean and comfortable. The menu was great with lots of variety and the dishes we chose were very tasty and good value for money. The staff were lovely and nothing was too much bother. The pub is quite small and friendly. We chatted to a couple from Texas and a couple from Edinburgh who were so friendly. Haydon Bridge is ideal for accessing inland Northumberland and only a short drive to the coast. We visited Chesters and Housesteads Roman forts along with a visit to The Sill. The next day we visited Aydon Castle and then Corbridge. We had a lovely weekend and will definitely stay at The Railway Hotel and Bistro again.
Nothing at all. Everything was great.

The Railway Hotel & Bistro was exactly what we were looking for, for a quick night in Northern England to visit Hadrian's Wall. The staff were fantastic and accommodating, we were able to get checked in quickly, and hung out in the restaurant for a pint later at night! The breakfast was amazing as well and quite a bit larger than I was expected. If you are in the area and looking for a great place to spend a night I would recommend them!

We stayed in a premier room which was stylish spotlessly clean and comfortable. Large bed, a small dresser with mirror a big plus, well stocked hospitality tray, range of soap shampoo shower gel and body lotion and a large bath towel
One very small minus (and this is a small grumble) radiator in room was turned off on arrival so room a little chilly to begin. However we had booked a standard room and only upgraded on arrival so we were not due to be in this room. Switched on and room cosy for rest of stay
