Lovely, well kept, clean with attentive staff. Food was lovely too but very expensive and the wines were also expensive. We fine dine a lot but this cost more than we've ever paid before and then there's a service charge added! Pillows weren't great, perhaps there needs to be a spare in each room? Noise in the early hours of our second night with people returning back to their room talking very loudly. Spa is clean and staff were friendly and attentive. Overall we had a nice, well earned break, but if the food was more reasonably priced we would have had afternoon tea before going to the races. We would have happily paid £25pp but not £40odd each! These prices took the shine off a little!

The warm welcome at reception, the authentic decor, the fabulous breakfast and the fruit bowl in the room. We enjoyed stretching our legs in the grounds when we arrived after our long drive.
The welcome at the pool. The pool/spa reception made my teens feel unwelcome, even when we almost broke the speed limit to get to the hotel in time for the 1-hour per day access permitted to the children. The pool was the main reason we booked Middlethorpe as a treat for the children at the end of a week long trip, so this was a big disappointment.

It is a truly beautiful place. Everywhere I turned there was a picture calling to be taken. The green grass, the beautiful gardens, trees and flowers, the small pond - everything had an Alice in Wonderlandish feel. It’s far enough from the city to be surrounded by beautiful green fields and close enough that you can get a taxi to ride into the city center when needed. The staff was exceptional, always polite and taking care of every request whether it was a cup of tea in the lawns or suggestions of what to do nearby. The spa was also wonderful - with the heated pool, jacuzzi and steam / sauna, it all added to a relaxing stay

From the moment you arrive you’ll feel like royalty. Everything was first class, the staff were lovely and we stayed in the main house which was a beautifully maintained building with so much character and unique features and antiques. The beds were comfy and room had a generous tea and coffee tray with bottled water. The garden view made it almost impossible to believe its only a few mins to the main road. We also thoroughly enjoyed the use of the spa facilities. Breakfast was excellent.

Historic. Good Spa. Grounds/gardens. Breakfast. Most staff. Bed.
Substandard initial room offered. Unhelpful uninformative dining staff. Told we couldn't have 8pm table, but could have 7 30 table, so curtailed our spa visit. By 8.20 we still had not been seated, so we left and dined elsewhere. Stifling hot bedroom, (hot night) but not helped by bathroom radiator stuck on full blast and remaind that way despite asking for it to be turned off. Tiny cramped bathroom compared to bedroom.

Everything. From beginning to end our stay was a wonderful experience. The leisurely atmosphere and ambience of Middlethorpe Hall combined with the friendly and helpful staff made our two day stay a memorable relaxing time.
If I could find find fault with anything it was the shower shield and shower head being fixed which made it difficult to switch on the water without getting my hair wet. A small price to pay for an otherwise faultless visit.

The whole stay was ideal for my requirements. The location, just outside York was perfect for me. Close to the city centre but a great feeling of being in the beautiful countryside. The room was very comfortable and had all the amenities you expect from a top class hotel. The weather was very cold when I stayed, but the room was very cozy and comfortable. The service and staff are very good and professional.
I could not really point to anything. I would have liked to stay longer.

Welcome, Room, location, grounds, staff, food, bar/lounge. The staff welcomed us from the very minute we arrived, and managed a perfect balance between attentitiveness and privacy. The location and grounds were fantastic, and our 'cottage' room was a great feature. The restoration of the place was superbly done, and the whole experience is one we will look to repeat whenever we come to the area.
I honestly cannot think of anything we did not like.

A well-organised hotel with a genuine sense of history and style. Very friendly staff who are anxious to please. Best breakfast in a long time. Excellently located for York without being in the crowded centre. Good spa. A credit to the National Trust
Don't like overhead showers which you can't operate without putting your head under the shower.

This is a treasure of a hotel. Staff were almost unfailingly friendly and welcoming and went above and beyond to make our stay relaxing and stress-free. The extensive grounds are beautiful and sitting on the terrace with a pre-dinner drink was a real treat. The lounges were also very comfortable. Breakfast was superb, with exquisite home-made croissants and very superior fruit salad, for example. The bed was very comfortable and the room was excellently appointed. We had a large window overloooking the grounds. A very restorative break.
Nothing (although one waiter was a bit surly but the excellence of all the other staff made up for this)
