Hotel La Joya Isla Mujeres

la Joya is a gem. It’s just as described - a boutique hotel overlooking the Mediterranean. Plenty of opportunities to relax and enjoy the view of the Sea. Our room (#4) was comfortable and clean with a lovely view of the Sea from the room and the deck. The bed was comfortable and the air conditioning was a welcome amenity. Breakfast was served every morning on the deck- a wonderful way to start the day. La Joya is located in a very quiet part of the island, with few restaurant options, which wasn’t an issue for us. Taxis are plentiful to get all around the island.

The majority of the staff were very friendly and super helpful, although the man who I think was the manager was curt. I felt like I was bothering him each time I interacted with him. They didn’t have any snorkeling gear. The process for ordering breakfast - submit a paper request every day- is very outdated. It was hard to remember to do it and there seemed to be miscommunication between the reception staff and the kitchen. They are working on updating it.

As many have stated, great views, beautiful quiet location. Yes, hotel is older, but very quaint. Staff are fabulous and go out of their way to make your stay special. Continental breakfast included and can be served on your patio. We had no problems with water pressure or hot water access. They are working on improving the hotel plumbing and water as we had ours turned off one day while working on it, but it wasn’t a problem as we were at the beach/pool during this time. Loved watching the iguanas that would wander around the pool and grounds at times. The hotel is built on the side of the cliffs on the south end of the island facing Cancun. So, there are a lot of stairs (uneven) to get anywhere on the property. Was not a problem for us, but something to be aware of. There are a few bars/restaurants to easily walk to.

Coffee was not hot, food was ok, but nothing special and not a large selection. Room is cleaned everyday, but not always very well. When we arrived, we found someone’s bra left behind the refrigerator. Our room had a kitchenette, however there was 1 plate, 1 fork, 1 knife, and a few odd other pieces. Not very well equipped.

What a wonderful small hotel! We loved being served breakfast on our deck each morning. The views are stunning. All of the staff were friendly, helpful, and pleasant. The location is perfect for swimming and snorkeling down the coast. The food and drinks at the restaurant are excellent and there are several good restaurants nearby. It's easy to take the public bus or taxis to other parts of the island. We enjoyed talking with other guests.

As others have said, there can be noise from the music of boats arriving from Cancun, mostly in the afternoons, and sadly from nearby construction. The beds are a bit hard.

What a great find on Isla Mujeres! We loved the private beach down below to play and explore; as well as the pool and breakfast outside of our room. As you can tell from the photos, there are a lot of steps (so don't stay here if you can't do steps easily). A few notes on getting there. We originally planned to rent a (very expensive) golf cart to get to the location, but when we arrived at the island they were all sold out. If you don't have too much luggage you can skip the (very expensive) taxi and just take the city bus. It goes right in front of the property and you can just jump off. Plus you can take the bus back to the city easily. Just stand on the street and wait.

We visited when the weather was bad, but even with the rain, the view was gorgeous. The grounds are beautiful. Oswaldo, Hector, and the restaurant staff were very pleasant and helpful. The beds are comfortable. We loved having breakfast on the terrace. We weren't able to swim, but having beach access and free use of the kayaks is a definite plus.The area was peaceful and quiet.

We booked during Christmas week, so I understand the rates being high, but I think they were very high for the quality of the room which was rather dated. We enjoyed having breakfast on the terrace but the coffee was lukewarm (we even took it back and it still wasn't hot), the fresh juice was watered down, and the bread was so-so). The water pressure in the shower was low, and adjusting the temperature was tricky. With all that being said though, I'd still come back. And with a few changes, I'd give this place a 10.

Location was excellent, close to punta sur so much more chilled and relaxing. Fantastic views, the pool was superb. Miguel makes excellent cocktails.

The included breakfast was ok, decent enough but pretty simple. Lights outside our room didn’t work so we weren’t able to sit outside our room after dusk. Sometimes it was difficult to get a drink at the bar (soft and alcoholic) before it officially opened (around 2pm some days) due to the owner not arriving with the keys.

breakfast delivered to the room lovely snorkeling Charming, cozy, very Mexicano! Room. Bed- very nice and comfortable. Wonderful chaise ledge near bar for fantastic sunset watching. Nice picturesque pool near the bar.

no protein on the breakfast- all carbs. wish there could have been a boiled egg option in place of juice, fruit or bread. I easily would have replaced the fruit with a hard-boiled egg.

comfy bed, extremely clean units (I remarked it was the cleanest hotel I’d ever stayed at,) great views from pool area, friendly staff, tasty breakfast. I enjoyed that it was removed from the craziness in playa Norte. the manager was especially accommodating to minor requests.

the taxis to playa Norte for dinner and nightlife did start to add up by the end.

Breakfast was incredible and eating it outside under a covered balcony with a fabulous view on wood table with wood chairs made it the best experience possible. And the hammocks under the covered balconies with that view were amazing. The improvements were great - more food, deck with lounge chairs & umbrellas & the open air restaurant next to the pool.

They were understaffed during our stay so the poor staff were over worked. In spite of that, they were still friendly & filled our every request with a smile. Amazing! We were happy to see more staff added on our last day. Also, since our stay here 5 years ago, party boats are now parking very close to shore so we had to listen to competing loud music throughout the day. That was sad because we’re not sure we want to return. It used to be quiet & peaceful here.

Oswaldo, Miguel, and the rest of the staff were amazing. The views, the private beach, and the close proximity to great snorkeling were all very appealing.

Everything was great.
