The Black Lion had fantastic food both at dinner (scotch egg heaven) and breakfast (loads of options including full English and eggs royale). Staff were exceptionally welcoming and made us feel very at home. Whatever we asked for they went out of their way to help us. We especially appreciated the late night dairy free lattes.

We stayed for 3 nights and whilst the room was spotless when we arrived, the housekeeping service could have been better as we had to request dry towels/ clean cups each evening when we returned. These were always very promptly provided upon request but it would have been nicer to return to find the room ready to go.

We arrived late on Friday evening, ten minutes before our table booking, and check in was very quick, with very friendly bar staff. The room was beautiful, with homemade cookies (which were amazing) and fresh milk for coffee the next day (little things like this make such a difference). We had a beautifully cooked dinner in the pub (and very reasonable in price too, for the quality), and then a very good night's sleep. The shower was great the next morning, and the view outside the pub was just delightful. Breakfast exceeded all expectations. The chef is a proper chef, not just a cook. I had porridge followed by the most perfectly cooked poached egg on avocado toast, and my husband had the full English, which he reported was top quality. Even the condiments are homemade by the owner's mum, he said. I could not fault anything about this place. We stayed better only because we wanted to go walking in the Peaks the following day, but we've found an absolute gem which I'm absolutely sure we'll return to.

Nothing! Apart from being slightly closer to our home so we can go more often!

What a superb stay! Had more than met my expectations. Lovely village pub very friendly. But the rooms were absolutely outstanding. So much thought to detail. The room a really good size. Plenty of space. The bed was super comfortable. plenty of lighting lovely view. Was given loads of drinking options including pressed coffee! and chilled milk. lovely touch adding the homemade cookies and I adored the mugs and saucers I would love to know where they were bought from or made cause i would happily buy some. The breakfast was outstanding the chef was a lovely and food was top notch. Wifi worked great and there was Netflix.

I have to admit it was a tad bit of a nightmare to find. We were coming from Alton Towers after scarefest and we ended up down a really teeny winding path for 20 mins. I dont think it helped it was pitch black. So Not really the Inns fault but not the easiest to find either. But the stay was so lovely so don't let that put you off.

The staff were amazing, especially Louise. The food was exceptional, all local produce. Really nice rooms , excellent bedding and towels. The pub has a great history and is unspoilt in parts. One of the best things was the welcoming community, we felt like one of the locals. Nothing was too much trouble and we would all return here and recommend.

The bed was a small double and whilst really comfortable my personal preference is a bit larger.

Great room, very clean and the decor was lovely. The tea and coffee station was very well stocked and I got a cookie on arrival. The staff managed to get me in for an evening meal even though it was a Saturday and the food was great with a lovely atmosphere. When I got back up to the room, I could hear the restaurant below but it all went quiet before 10pm and was super quiet all night.

The room was quite cold, I don't think the heating was on, but it wasn't a huge issue

very comfortable Peak District Inn - newly refurbished comfortable rooms, nicely equipped. The Pub has several cosy rooms and lots of original features - and the place feels older than the 18th century date above the door. The food was superb - brilliantly cooked and the best pub meal we've had in a long time. cask ales were on form too.

Hard to fault anything - the pub was busy on a saturday night, so booking for food advisable.

The pub is a gem. Comfortable room but a bit warm in the night but had a reasonable sleep. Lovely bathroom and also a nice touch fresh homemade cookies with the tea and coffee in the bedroom.

Breakfast could be better, poached eggs were overdone and also for dinner had a lovely ribeye steak but the chips were well overcooked. The homemade ice cream was very good though.

The Black Lion Inn was in perfect location, great hiking opportunities. Really friendly staff and excellent food. We joined a local quiz night which was a fun way to get to know some of the locals. Very friendly people.

Everything was great, except the bed was a bit on a small side. It was even too short for me (I am 5'5''). The village of Butterton is really beautiful and we did a great 10km walk from the Wetton Mills Tea Room to Thor's Cave and around the surrounding countryside.

Incredibly quiet ;

It was when I was about to end my reservation (or maybe already had confirmation ?) that I discovered that there were no breakfast ; I don't remember it was clearly & obviously announced at presentation of facilities ; it makes the stay quite expensive but all prices are quite high in teh surroundings. No BBC program available on TV.

Excellent value for money. Myself and my partner paid £104 for a Thursday over night stay with Breakfast. Room was modern and clean. Wonderful touches having good selection of drinks in the room, milk in a thermos and fresh baked cookies! We had dinner that night in the pub. Great food and service! Comfy peaceful sleep. Exceptional breakfast. Highly recommend this place!
