The Cross Keys in in an excellent location for a stop off on a long journey or as part of a tour of the area.Near the M6 but in a quiet and beautiful setting. The staff were friendly and welcoming. The tasty breakfast well presented served in a dining room with lovely views. Our room was spacious and the bed comfy with good sized bathroom on suite. The public areas offered a bar, pool, darts and good sized TV and an a food menu alll in a cosy village pub setting.

The lack of water pressure made the shower in the bath impossible to use. The kettle had to be plugged in on the floor and the mirror in the bedroom was too low to be of use. No mirror by the shaver point. A small TV with poor reception. I feel a number of small things let this otherwise great property down.

Clearly when we walked in to the Cross Keys it had something special about it. The place had an amazing atmosphere. The staff were friendly, the food served was so delicious - hats off the the chef, and the bed was comfy. However, the only downer was that the pub didn’t get rid of the happy, singing local cliental in the bar until after midnight, unfortunately our bedroom was above. I I recognise we were staying in a local pub and happy to hear a good ol’ sing sing now and again, but on this occasion we needed a good night’s rest for our journey the next day!

Apart from the music after 11:00pm, there were no hooks to hang your clothes in bedroom 6.

A very welcome stay at the end of a long day walking the coast to coast footpath.I was walking with two friends so we stayed in two lovely double bedded rooms just down the hill from the pub. Comfortable bed, en suite shower and complementary washing products. We had delicious and huge pizzas for supper (enough for next days packed lunch). Our host even took us back to the start of our next days walk at Orton which was very much appreciated

The room was super comfortable, clean and had everything I needed. I had a very delicious pizza the evening I arrived - more than I could eat. The staff were all welcoming, friendly and helpful. It's a great location for an overnight break on a long journey, being only a few minutes from the M6. The countryside around is beautiful and would be great for walking.

Sadly due to staff shortages breakfast was not as good as I'd hoped. But it wouldn't put me off staying there again.

The breakfast was excellent. Cooked well and presented beautifully.

The shower in the bathroom was a corner shower with just a curtain round. Prior to our arrival when previous encumbants had stayed the shower must have leaked and the carpet in the bedroom was soaking wet at the entrance to the bedroom. This made us reluctant to use the shower as it was not pleasant walking on soggy carpet. We asked for extra bath mats which we put down and used but it spoilt our visit.

The Cross Keys is a 16th century coaching inn. Whilst the building reflects its age, the current owners are embarking on a rolling schedule of improvements which should enhance the visitor’s experience. The food is excellent and served in a spacious dining room. The beds are very comfortable with pristine bedding. The overall experience is very positive.

Lovely pub, good food and helpful, friendly staff. Beds were comfy and room was clean. Lovely walk from The Kings Head pub to The Fat Lamb pub, recommended by the barman. Great stop off location on the way up to the NC500.

The only drawback for us was the tiny bathroom.

Room was comfortable but right above the bar and a bit noisy. Bathroom was a little dated and loo roll holder broken. There were other rooms so not sure why we were put directly above the bar, unless of course they were fully booked, but it didn't appear so. Lovely evening meal, and breakfast also good.

A bit noisy as we were above the bar.

Lovely atmosphere with friendly, helpful staff. Perfect stay-over on long trip from Scotland to Sheffield. Great homemade pizzas and coctails. Beautiful location with Orton just down the road for wonderful, well sign-posted walks.

We didn't realise that breakfast needed to be pre-ordered.
