A really interesting and hugely spacious hotel having been converted from the offices of the original steam railway company. The staff, & especially the manager Dennis, were particularly friendly and helpful. The suites were very spacious and well equipped and the bed very comfortable.

The location is awesome. An easy tram ride up Flinders St to Fed Square or NGV, up Collins Street to Regent Theatre and up Bourke St for shopping, Princess Theatre or Melbourne Museum. Walking distance to DFO and Marcel stadium. We did it all from this wonderful place to stay. We had a kitchenette so could make breakfast saving us $$$ to dine out. A grand old building with a pool and spa, lovely library beside lobby. We did not hear any guest noise and given its location was surprised not to hear trains all night. Dennis meets and greets you daily, the loveliest of blokes. So much old world charm staying here and we got a really, really reasonable rate. Our room was even ready when we arrived early. Staying at the Grand really made our Christmas in the City getaway.

This was a great experience, our studio apartment was huge, very well equipped, very comfortable, a very nice experience - an old elegant hotel in great shape. Usually old colonial hotels can be a bit seedy - not this one - it was great. The owner greeted us personally, extremely friendly, informative and attentive. The staff were great too - very friendly and helpful. Melbourne sprawls a bit - but we were able to walk most places we wanted to go The restaurant next door is no longer a part of the hotel and is an Indian restaurant. The clientele were mostly Indian which is always a good sign - the food was outstanding.

This was my third stay at this hotel and it still doesn't disappoint. After booking a studio apartment, I received an upgrade to a 1 bedroom apartment overlooking Spencer Street, which had a very pleaseant vista from the balcony. The 12 foot ceilings give a grand feeling to the room, but the basic decor helps to make it feel a little homely insetad of like an echo chamber. Whilst the overall presentation of my room was getting a little tired, it was still well maintained and clean. Housekeeping only comes to your room every second day, but I had a short stay, so I didn't interact with them during my stay. I arrived by rail from Sydney and the hotel is a short and very convenient walk from Souther Cross Station, which is also the terminal for the airport shuttle. If you're exploring the city, there is a tram stop nearby on Spencer Street or you can catch the free City Cricle tram from the stop on Flinders Street, both less than a block from the front door of the hotel. It's also very handy to Southbank, Marvel Stadium and the city CBD, making it an excellent base for touring around Melbourne city.

I was disappointed to learn that since my last stay, the restaurant within the hotel has changed to an external provider and now only does lunch and dinner. A breakfast option in the hotel itself would be great, especially if you don't really feel like wandering up the street in the rain in search of a cafe for breakfast. Not an issue for me, but some guests may notice some street noise at times on the Spencer Street side of the hotel. It is, after all, in the heart of the city, which doesn't stop at night. The double glazing goes go a long way to cancelling this out, but lighter sleepers might still notice some noise bleed through.

The hotel has lots of character and history, at an impressive building. The location is super convenient next to the train station and with tram stops at your doorstep. Our bedroom was quite large, fully equipped and had really comfortable beds. Lastly, Danis and the staff were welcoming and helpful throughout our stay. We had a great time!

While very convenient, being next door to a train station means some noisy trains running by. It didn’t disturbe us at all, but maybe something for guest to consider

I was completely over whelmed with the kindness, support and care that both the senior receptionist and owner showed me and my daughter, and her friend. My daughter had some struggles that she was dealing with, and the care and love that was shown to me with the booking, and to my daughter during her stay was absolutely exceptional. I can not thank the staff enough !! I will be telling all my family, friends and colleagues about this amazing hotel and the exceptional service that we received. I have made another booking for my daughter and her friend for New Years Eve, and knowing that they will be safe at the Grand Hotel makes me feel so much better.

I honestly don't think there was anything that my daughter or I disliked.

The friendly greeting and helpfulness of the staff at reception, on arrival, and any interactions during our stay. Really enjoyed the interactions with Denis’s brother Tom, all the way from America, (while Denis was off gallivanting in Paris for the Olympics). He went out of his way to be warm and friendly. Since moving to QLD from Victoria and having stayed at the Grand over many years, we love the history and grandeur of the place and will return for sure. Location, location, location. How central Melbourne can you get! Public transport at the door. Entertainment precincts of Crown Casino, Marvel Stadium and The District at Southbank. What more could you ask for!

Some areas of the building showing their age. We encountered a couple of minor cleanliness issues, particularly in the elevator. The weather during our stay wasn’t great, but I know you can’t control that one!

The hotel is incredibly large and truly has a "character", in a good sense. Dennis the receptionist was friendly and made us feel welcome instantly. The pool, sauna, location close to the Southern Cross Station and walking distance to the heaps of food joints are hard to beat.

The hotel is dated, literally every bit of it is well past its due date. It doesn't make it unusable but it also doesn't match the price tag. A few things didn't work, like the spa (for a day) or bathrooms at the pool (for the full length of our stay). If you end up with a room at the far end of the hotel (Southern Cross Station side), you will walk for a few minutes just to get out of the hotel, it's huge.

A special mention to Dennis . Thank you so much for your assistance and attention to our needs and comfort. The building history and the way the heritage has been preserved, is Grand is many ways not just name. Very good location to trains, trams and other services in the CBD. The amenities and rooms are good. The mattresses were far too soft to be able to get comfortable for sleeping . That is only personal criticism. The room was very quiet and insulated from outside noise. Heating was cosy. Also very convenient having a kitchen.

Beautiful old building situated close to everything you need to get to in Melbourne. You can either walk, tram or train it. A stone throw from Southern Cross Station. We arrived 2 hours early and although not expecting to get into our room early, Denis was very kind and we were able to which was very much appreciated. I love the welcome card and chocolates left, a lovely personal touch and so nice that the time is taken to hand write this. Not very common to have something so personal these days! I can't fault this place and it is definitely our "go to place" when staying in Melbourne. Wouldn't bother looking for anywhere else and look forward to our next stay here.

The pillows! They are way too soft for me and I woke with a slight headache. They are perfect for my partner so it's an individual thing but 2 soft and 2 firm pillows on the beds would solve that problem.
