The owners of the ryokan were so friendly and really tried to make guests feel at home! I also enjoyed the delicious food at breakfast every morning (different menu everyday) and getting to relax in the bath after each day of exploring was awesome! The ryokan is also in a perfect location, close to Nishiki Market and transportation. Room was clean and it was actually really comfortable sleeping on the tatami.

This is very minor and not a big deal at all, but my room had the toilet and shower on opposite ends of the room, so had to cross the living room to get to the other part. Again, very minor, and it might have just been my room’s layout.

June 2023

We book 2 Japanese style rooms with private showers for our one week stay in Kyoto in June and expected a standard hotel service but our expectations were greatly exceeded! Hosts treat their hotel like home and welcome all guests like dear relatives with outmost care and warmth! Every morning we were greeted with huge traditional Japanese breakfast that filled us for half of the day, we will never forget those beautifully prepared meals! Green tea (hot and cold) was always available in the rooms with cookies as well as fresh yukata robes changed every day (overall room service was exceptional!). The hotel is located on a quite street just 2 steps from Nishiki market and major shopping street, within short walking distance from subway and major downtown Kyoto attractions. It was extremely clean and well maintained, charming in all details throughout, with a small and private onsen on the 2nd floor, everything was functional (AC, washing/drying, etc.). If we ever in Kyoto again (I want to hope soon!), we'll stay only at Kagihei!

Nothing, it was perfect!

Absolutely wonderful. Very clean and spacious rooms! The hotel is directly located in downtown. For breakfast I could additionally book japanese breakfast which then gets served in a dining hall you'll be getting a separate room in japanese style - I liked it! The rooms itself too were old japanese style designed with tatami mats, wallscrolls and futon beds. The staff was very kind and very helpful, even though with my limited japanese, they helped me in english perfectly. They offered the service Ta-Q-Bin to delivery your suitcases to another location like other hotels, too! For the washing machine you can simply drop off your clothes at the reception for a small fee to have them washed and dried. Should you want to go out in the late night, it is best to talk to the staff beforehand. I liked the short stay there and I will definitely pay a visit again at Kyonoyado Kagihei in Kyoto!

Nothing to complain about!

This ryokan was lovely. We stayed here on our honeymoon after staying in a very nice hotel in Tokyo for 5 days, and were worried that this might feel like a “downgrade.” Happy to say that wasn’t the case at all! The staff were so nice/friendly, and it was awesome to get to experience a traditional ryokan while in Kyoto. The room was spacious, and the futon beds were surprisingly comfortable (my husband was mildly concerned about sleeping on them but didn’t have any issues). The ryokan staff provided replaced the cookies and hot water/tea in the room each day. Highly recommend springing for the included breakfast - it was amazing! The bath in our room was also surprisingly spacious. We each tried the public bath one night and it was nice. Great location, super close to Nishiki Market and within walking distance of downtown/Gion district.

No complaints!

Our favorite stay of our 3 week trip around Japan! The room was lovely and spacious, with comfortable futons, and green tea, iced green tea and bottled water refilled daily. The air conditioning was efficient and quiet. The location is excellent, right by the market but on a quiet side street. But by far the best part was the lovely couple who run it- I forgot something in the room and they kindly sent it to my next hotel by courier. They also shipped my luggage and do laundry for guests- the service was far beyond my expectations. It was a joy to stay here.

Our host, Yuko, and others were so warm and welcoming. The traditional Japanese breakfast each day was absolutely delightful. The whole stay was a great experience for my husband and 11 year old son. The location is absolutely amazing; less than 100 metres from Nishiki Markets while still feeling quiet and secluded. It’s also very close to Daimaru, other stores and restaurants and transportation. The onset was also great. Absolutely worth the stay and would look to come back on any subsequent visits. Thank you, Yuko and family for hosting us.

The toilet is quite small, which is probably in line with other Japanese style accommodation. The shower/bath were of good size though.

Available public bath ! Although it can accommodate only 3 pax, it’s private enough for my party . The hosts: superbly helpful and friendly. Location to Nishi market and Teramachi is just a stone throw away - with loads of food and shops to go to. Cleanliness is the top priority as the room is cleaned daily which I didn’t expect it from day 1 of my 3-night stay :) towels were changed daily too. For older folks like me may find it tough to sleep on futon beds for 3 nights straight. Otherwise it is superbly comfortable. Hosts knew we had wanted to do a last minute reservation for the Japanese breakfast so they kept a lookout for cancellation which happened ! And we had our ¥2000 per pax breakfast :) (if need additional rice just ask for it and it will be brought to you - think the just-enough servings in the pot was to ensure no wastage )

As we had an adjourning rooms for the party of 4, the toilet on the 2nd room could have also filled with hand soap too as we had to keep going to the main toilet to get the soap to wash after use.

BEST accomodation we had during our vacations in Japan - Where should I start? GREAT hosts. The nicest people we met in Japan - Location. OMG I loved that this house was next to the Market, close to bus/subway station, and also not that far from the city center - The experience of staying in a traditional house: I can recommend staying at least 2 nights in a Ryokan. Sleeping in the floor (by the way the beds were SO comfy!), using the public paths, having amazing green tea and cookies every evening, being greeted by the hosts everytime you leave and you arrive.. it is such a beautiful feeling. - SO MUCH space! Compared to the rest of the hotels we had, it was such a relieve that this room was huge! You even have your own "onsen" feeling in the bathroom. - I just cannot describe how perfect this place is. THANK you for hosting us!

- I was aware that there is a curfew until 23:00. This is an important information when booking this place, because it might not be for all to have these "rules". For some reason, I did not know that the doors also open at a specific time, I think 6:30. So it was for me a bit annoying because I originally planned to see Kyoto attractions really early, I even wanted to get out around 5:30. Of course, this was not possible and this was my mistake, for not researching properly. So if you want to be an early bird and see, for example, Fushimi Inari without crowds, then you might need to stay somewhere where it does not matter how early you leave:)

The absolute best breakfast experience I’ve ever had, and a truly luxurious onsen. Our hosts were delightful at every turn. The guesthouse is located in absolutely the best part of Kyoto - great food and shopping less than 100 metres away, and easy access to to train, team and bus transport.

Strangely enough, the lighting was very dim which bothered me as I am older and short-sighted. Having to be home by 11pm seemed like something that should be stated up front in the booking information. Being offered the option to book for breakfast at check-in would have been helpful.

This place was nothing short of perfect. The tatami room was delightful, pretty, comfortable, and so pleasant we didn't want to leave!!! The location was great. On a side street close to Nishiki market, so both central and quiet. The neighborhood has tons of restaurants and cool shops. The breakfast (we didn't pre-book, but added just for one day, which is a nice option) was delicious and beautifully served. Loved having the onsen in place. It's simple and functional and was great to have after a long day on our feet. The host was amazing. Lovely, kind, welcoming, and very helpful. Loved her.
