After reading all the poor reviews/ratings I wasn't expecting the britannia hotel to be anything great, i booked it simply because it was right next to the national express coach station which we needed to head for the following day, I booked a double room with a window and upon check in with Jazeel he was extremely polite and upgraded us to an executive suite with a 4 poster bed, we couldn't believe our luck, it was a birthday to remember for my partner, the hotel is very grand with lots of history, the room was beautiful and probably had more space than a London apartment yes it was that big, staff were fantastic, not sure why it's had so many bad reviews, I would definitely stay again, big thank you to Jazeel on reception

Staff were lovely especially Jazeel that checked us in he was very friendly and helpful. The hotel is a beautiful building with lovely features. Nice and clean bed was comfortable decent size room and a full size bath. For what we payed it was a bargain

I wasn't a fan of breakfast but my husband was happy with the choices available. No big light in bedroom it was all lamps it made doing make up a bit awkward.

The room was large enough for one person, it was clean, quiet, in the center of the city. The receptionist, Jazeel, was nice and helpful, because I did not have a visa card, and helped me with the manager to pay in cash. Thank you!

I came up from london as my elderly mother is in hospital. KUMAR and JASEEN on reception were absolutely brilliant. KUMAR upgraded me to a room with a window as i booked one without to keep the cost down. I cant rate them highly enough. they let me store my luggage while i visited the hospital in manchester. Thank you so much guys. See you soon. Andrew.

Everything is great

Very grand, elegant property, ideally situated for my coach and rail stations.

The toilet in my bathroom did not flush, upon arrival and throughout my stay. When I handed in the card (as requested by the hotel), detailing any repair work required, and mentioned what the problem was, to the receptionist as I was checking out, she commented “that’s o.k.” . Well, no it wasn’t actually. I was also a little unhappy about the service from reception when checking in. Apart from my dealings with reception staff (and the toilet problem mentioned above), everything else was fine and I would stay there again.

I've stopped at this hotel many times and and never had a bad room, yes the rooms are old fashioned, The room is furniture mismatched like the corner of Britsh Beart Foundation charity shop The beds are always comfortable, the shower works great, plenty of complementary tea and coffee and the TV always works Can be noisy at times I could hear the couple in the next room having inmate sexual relations lasted all of five minutes so I presume they was married as didn't last long ! The location is fantastic, team on reception are polite, security was friendly when came back worse for wear, If you are on budget want a hotel central and don't mind 90s chic rooms, that's clean and tidy this is perfect

Buffet breakfast is over priced, and not that nice

Magnificent staircase. The room/bathroom was spotless. Beds extremely comfortable. All though we were told it was executive, there was nothing to make it so. I paid for breakfast, everyday restaurant opened at 7.30. We thought that we would have breakfast on our last day as we had to leave at 8am. Went to eat it wasn’t open. Then at reception we were told it didn’t open till 8 on Saturdays. I asked for a refund & was informed that as we had an executive room there wouldn’t be a refund. It was just a room. Needless to say it put a damper on our last day

No refund on our breakfast. No one mentioned the difference in opening times

It is a beautiful Victorian hotel with all the grandeur you could possibly imagine. It has been refurbished with modern decor which is a terrible shame. It was very clean, the staff were very friendly, there was plenty of hot water and the bed linen was excellent. Breakfast was standard buffet no complaints and my daughter and I are vegan, room was smallish. Location is fantastic. I would describe it as faded elegance - the price was amazing.

It was sad to see that this beautiful hotel had not been renovated to the standard it deserved but then I wouldn't have been able to afford it.
