Staff were friendly. The room was modern and nice looking. We was going to bring our pup (I forgot to remove him from the booking as he was longer with us for the trip) and they gave him a bed and fresh bowls.

Pillows were too soft, so had to fold them to get them to a decent comfort level. The bathroom had a few snags. The carpet to the bathroom didn't have the metal cover so the carpet grip was visible and was stood on a few times (which hurt!). Shower was difficult to use, the temperature gauge didnt line up properly, so I thought it was on cold but it came out as boiling water. There was no rubber seal on the shower screen, so the bathroom got drenched everytime the shower was used.

The hotel is in a great central location by the water in Leith and surrounded by fish restaurants. Nice quiet, safe area later in the evening.Staff were very helpful in delivering ordered gifts to the room for our arrival. The room was very peaceful and quiet which facilitated a good nights sleep in the comfortable bed. Cocktail voucher to celebrate birthday was a nice touch. Food in the Grill was surprisingly good considering the somewhat lacklustre atmosphere.

Limited coffee pods (well know brand) to one per person per day in the bedroom ? Had ask for more on several occasions before receiving a reasonable quality delivered to the room. Room service offered three choices of toasted sandwiches on their "late night" menu but couldn't produce first choice, settled for ham & cheese ! Strangely offered "two free drinks at the bar" if we forewent room be cleaned/serviced following day - no thanks.

We loved the historic building - the old seamen’s mission from the days Leith was an active port where whalers and sailors rested up - and the location right on Leith’s happening Shore area. We had a standard twin room which had obviously been recently decorated as it was super fresh and tastefully done. Super comfy bigs beds too. We had cocktails in the bar, where service was prompt and pleasant. Breakfast in the Brasserie was top notch. One very obvious advantage to the hotel is it’s pretty big car park. Nearby streets are metered and parking at hotels in central Edinburgh is very expensive. With the tram stopping near to the hotel, it made sense to stay in Leith and jump on a tram up town. Trams are clean, frequent and at £2 a journey, pretty cheap too.

There was nothing we disliked about the Mal.

The Location is gorgeous if you are looking for a bit of quiet away from the hustle and bustle of central Edinburgh. However the tram literally just round the corner and in 15 mins you're in Princess street. Big bonus is that the tram goes all the way to the airport which avoids hassle and costs of taxis. Breakfast was lovely with a lovely choice of cooked, pastries, cereals, fruit, bread and hot beverages. I also had dinner there which was also excellent - lovely menu of food and wines. Service impeccable I had booked a standard double room. It was overlooking the side street of the hotel. Lovely space, very accommodating and comfortable.

There is no air con in the rooms, probably due to the fact that it is a very old building. However there are fans provided in the rooms.

We loved this hotel! The staff was extremely friendly (even said hi when we ran into them outside of the hotel!), the room was huge and gorgeous, the location was perfect, and the ability to have breakfast from the hotel in the morning was great. Cocktails in the lounge at night was a big plus, as were the free drink coupons we received for each day we chose to waive housekeeping. A great hotel, great vibes all around!

The breakfast options were a little limited, but what they did have was quite tasty. Easy aspect to look past! Nothing else stood out in a negative fashion for this hotel.

I liked that because I choose not to have the room cleaned, I received a drink at the bar gratis (which was pleasantly unexpected). Although I did not use the tram, it's very close. The location is great: lots of restaurants in the bustle of the new Leith, tram, lovely buildings from the old port. They've done a good job of converting the old building, whatever it was, into a modern hotel.

I was disappointed on the first morning that there were no kippers at breakfast, as I remembered having these on a previous visit and was looking forward to having them again. I understand that there were many guests, but surely the hotel restaurant would have a record of how many breakfasts to keep? Apparently there were also no more veggie breakfasts. I settled for a full English, which wasn't quite what I wanted. On the second morning, I did get kippers, which was great.

Staff very friendly and helpful The food was excellent..we had the beer and burger deal and the burger was one of the best I have ever tasted. All the toppings included on the price to, which was a nice surprise. The bed was very comfy as was the duvet, very crunchy and super soft quality bedding The room was pleasant with a nice view of Arthur's seat.

Just a small thing but makes first impressions. The main stair carpets are past there best stained, marked and just need an upgrade now as they look done in. We have stayed at Dundee Mal a few times, and that just feels newer and over all a bit more worth the money. We had a lovely stay though but there are other hotels that I would look at first for the money we paid for a night at Edinburgh Mal.

After initially being concerned about the amount of construction going on and trying to manoeuvre around streets into the carpark we soon realised this was not an issue as this place is an absolute gem. The location was fabulous with a very easy transport route into the City. Hotel is a little dated now but they do a great job with what they have. The rooms are huge and very comfortable. Breakfast was also very good. We would definitely stay here again.

We are gym goers and were attracted by ‘the state of the art gym’ in the hotel description. The actual gym is a small room with 3 machines and a handful of light weights. We didn’t actually use it during our stay. It might of been state of the art back in the day but certainly not in 2022. We ended up using the CrossFit gym nearby. 😃

The room was comfortable and well appointed. The location was excellent as it was quiet but near to restaurants and shops as well as a tram stop so there was easy access to the city centre. The staff, without exception, were pleasant and helpful.

Not much. I would have like access to cold drinking water other than at mealtimes. As in so many hotels, you had to ask for it and the staff would then get you some from the kitchen or give you a bottle of spring water. I wish all hotels would have a central drinking water tap for refilling bottles.

Bed was very comfy. Room was clean. Staff were friendly and the reception gave us a complimentary glass of fizz for us both as a lovely gesture and we were able to check in alot earlier than planned which was very greatfully received by us after travelling 6 hours on a bus. View from the room of the water was very picturesque. Breakfast is well worth the money as the produce used tasted beautiful

Floor boards are very creaky in the room as well as the ones upstairs as we could hear other guests walking around. Plug sockets seemed to make our plugs come out slightly, on the one in the lounge near the TV and the one in the corner near the bathroom door where the tall lamp is. Natural lighting seemed abit dark, found it difficult to do my makeup. Not sure if it's the grey of the walls that make it seem darker in there.
