Dinner and breakfast were excellent. The service was exceptional. The proprietor was engaging, informative, friendly and ready to cater to our welfare. This was the best reception we received after having stayed in several hotels in the southwest over a two week period. The room was modern and clean.

In hindsight would have booked the king size room for two.

Toooooo hot in the bedrooms even using a fan provided which we had to have on the highest setting all night (fan poor quality if you were more than a foot away you couldn’t feel it) - there are no windows in the corridors so no air flow into the rooms unfortunately. Air conditioning needed. dining room was dark and a part of it you go up steps and sit at tables on the stage. felt like a school dining room.

Couldn’t fault anything with the hotel, from the staff, to the food, to the room we had, the location. everything was just faultless. The staff were all amazing, we arrived and were greeted with a huge smile and giving lots of helpful advice on where’s best to go for the things we were looking to do, every single staff member went above and beyond for us and our little puppy Pippa, who they all adored and she had the best time getting treats and attention off you all. The rooms are modern, comfortable, the bathroom was great and the bath was huge and worth every penny you are looking to spend. The food in the restaurant is to die for, we only dined there one night of our stay and the venison and duck were divine, just wish we could of had it everyday!! We are looking to come back already and cant recommend you enough to everyone we know.

From arrival to check out ALL the staff were lovely ,sometimes very busy and multitasking but always happy to help . My room a single very small but perfectly adequate was comfortable. I honestly haven't slept better in ages. I wish the seagulls had a 'offswitch' but you can't have everything. My breakfast every morning was beautifully cooked , lots of choice. The hotel is definitely a hidden gem. Its beautifully decorated and has a relaxing atmosphere. Thankyou to Michael and his hardworking team 💙

Great location and town and vibe around. I really like it was all within walking distance Staff great.

A/c would be great. It was really too hot in room and hard to fall asleep. Parking is bit difficult. Even if you find room where to park it’s likely to be blocked next day. Coffee missing in the room.

The management and staff could not do enough for us. Check in smooth and friendly greetings. The rooms were smalls but everything was spotlessly clean; the beds and linens so comfortable, the shower brilliant and towels fluffy. Excellent. The restaurant has something for everyone which can normally be a worry because you imagine prefab food. Not so here. Delicious, fresh, imaginative and had we not made so many other arrangements with the large wedding party we were in Ilfracomb with we would have loved to have all of our meals here. My duo duck combination was fabulous and was almost outshone by the accompanying lightly sautéd spinach with beans. Too good. My partner had the fish which was tender and flaky with just a hint of sauce. Another had the beef rendang, spicy and yummy while another has happy with the chicken although I am sorry to say I have forgotten about as I was too busy enjoying mine! They made us individual lemon tarts as a special request as it was my husband's birthday. Excellent tartness, flaky pastry and just the right size. Good selection of wines and champagne which they kept for our last night there. This is a real find.

We went wild swimming at the Tunnels which was amazing and right next door. It would have been so wonderful to come back for a sauna and massage. WONDERFUL NEWS! They are as I write, completely those exact rooms. All the more reason to come back. The hiking all around there and the swimming is breathtaking. What a discovery.

two very minor things..The hotel can look a little dated from outside when you first pull up but don’t let that put you off… wasn’t too sure about leaving our room key with reception staff whenever you leave…it’s not that I don’t trust the staff, it’s because i feel like a drop out when I return at half one in the morning and have to ask for my key back. lol

We found a hidden gem at the Carlton, a refurbished hotel completed to the highest standard, five minute walk to the harbour where there are lots of bars and restaurants. The breakfast on both days was freshly cooked with good quality ingredients to your taste. One evening meal in the hotel was delicious, complements to the chef ! It was also a good location to visit all the pretty coastal villages and towns. The staff were happy and friendly and Michael (the owner) went out of his way to be helpful. We wished we could’ve stayed longer, but we will be back !

The food in the hotel is special, I had a good breakfast each day and dinner with my family one evening. They are local and choose the hotel for their dinner, it’s that good. Kacey is awesome, running the place in the afternoon and evening, as is Dawn at breakfast. The staff are very efficient and friendly, and the cleaning staff deserve a mention - they do a great job every day. Never had a problem with the Carlton.

The wifi is a little slow, I was getting less than 1Mb/s at times. Faster to switch to my mobile data.

This hotel was the perfect location for the wedding we attended at Tunnels, it was literally next door. We ate at the hotel in the evening and for breakfast, there was an excellent choice of food and it was all very well priced, this included a bar where again the prices were very good. We will definitely use this hotel again, it would be excellent as a base to travel and see the sites of Devon.

The room was small, but the price we paid was reflected in that. The room still had a fan, iron and ironing board, washing soaps and fresh water each day with coffee facilities.
