The beds were very comfortable and the room was very clean. Parking was free for hotel guests, and breakfast was included. The entire staff was very friendly and welcoming. There were good choices on the breakfast menu, from avocado toast to porridge to a traditional Irish breakfast (small, medium, large). The dinner menu offered tapas for sharing which we appreciated and enjoyed. Very good pub food and pleasant atmosphere. The inn is some distance from the center of Portsmouth, but there are good bus connections so you don’t have to drive into the downtown. A big thank you to the staff for a very pleasant stay.

Both the room door and bathroom door would ‘stick’ when trying to open them, unsure why. We got used to it so it wasn’t a problem.

The staff, without exception, were wonderful, kind and helpful. The rooms were modern, clean and comfortable. The food was good and reasonably priced. The 'on the day' cancelation policy and mid-day checkouts are incredibly useful for those of us there for QA Hospital appointments.

The fast dance music in the restaurant area in the evening was too loud to enjoy eating there. The mattresses are very firm: fine and comfortable for most people (including me), great for some back sufferers, not so good for some others with different back issues. Maybe a 'topper' or something 'on request' could be available for those needing a little more softness.

I was worried about quality and noise given that it is above a pub, but was very pleasantly surprised. The accomodation is well separated from the pub downstairs, and has been refurbished recently to a very good standard. It was akin to something like a Premier Inn. It is also good for travel connections. Very close to Cosham railway station and there is a bus interchange. Good connections to Portsmouth Harbour. Lovely big fan provided for a scorching week :-)

Unclear where to check in. I eventually realised that I had to go to pub bar. Better signing would be useful. The pub menu didn't appeal to me, but that is personal taste (prices were ok). Instead I got a pizza. Plenty of fast food chains nearby.

This hotel was exceptional and of a very high standard from staff, meals, security, noise, cleanliness and room. Been travelling for three months and this was the first time we had a good nights sleep and we’re comfortable. Meals were great and plenty to choose from. The pub was very busy so obviously a well liked local. The vibe was buzzing and people were lovely to talk too. We love our stay here and would have loved to stay longer.

Cannot fault this hotel on anything

Whenever I travel to Portsmouth for work I stay at the Red Lion. From the moment you walk in through the door you are welcomed with lovely, friendly staff who are always to welcoming. I never stay in hotels attached to pubs as I never had great experience but this isn't the case with Red Lion. The rooms are of a good size and freshly renovated. The cleanliness levels are always really high. I've stayed there a lot and I never found them anything but exceptional. Bed is comfortable and you do get all the commodities of a regular hotel such as hairdyer, coffee, tea and kettle. One thing I did miss was having aircon during one of the hot days but you have a fan in each room and frankly it wasn't an issue at all.

The only super small thing (which by the way you can't change now) is the toilet is super close to the wall but that is just a flaw with whoever designed the space for this hotel. In all honesty I have no bad points for this place.

THE WELCOME WE HAD, BY MICHAEL, THERE. THE CONGENIALITY OF BOTH THE RESIDENTS AND EVERY STAFF MEMBER WE MET. THE BREAKFAST WE CHOSE WAS MASSIVE! WE COULD HAVE DROVE TO GLASGOW, IN THAT MUCH 'FUEL'! OUR ROOM WAS BIG AND COMFORTABLE. IF THERE WAS MUSIC IN THE BAR, YOU COULD NOT HEAR IT! THE ROUTE TO THE MOTORWAY NORTH, WAS ONLY ABOUT A MILE, WEST, FROM THERE. WE WOULD RETURN. THE BREATHTAKING DIFFERENCE, IN THE AIR-QUALITY, THERE, RELATIVE TO THE NOXIOUS, OZONED, DEAD, M25.

THAT WE DIDN'T BOOK FOR LONGER. COULDN'T BECAUSE WE HAVE MATTERS HERE, THAT WE HAVE TO DEAL WITH TOMORROW. IT IS ABOUT 60 YEARS, SINCE I HAVE BEEN ON THE SOLENT, FATHER WAS ON HMS 80 YEARS AGO, WE DIDN'T HAVE TIME, TO VISIT THE CENTRES, BASED, SINCE THEN, ON HIS TIMES, THERE..

We were looking for a place to spend the night before the early morning ferry. It served us well. The place is clean, well-maintained, friendly and convenient. We did not have breakfast, but we did have dinner and it was very good for a very reasonable price. The staff were all very nice and helpful. Parking was easy and convenient. Location was very good for getting to the ferry easily, 15-20 minutes.

The location would not be a place I would want to be in if we were not going to the ferry. It is in a run-down, not so appealing area and nothing of note to see or do.

The room and bathroom were spacious and clean, and instructions on the check-in and out and property rules were clear. and easy to follow. Would definitely book The Red Lion again as the pub food was awesome and well made, with vegan options available so all were happy to order from the menu, the location of the venue that was attending made the Red Lion a great choice in the end. overall a lovely stay.

There wasn't much that didn't like about the Red Lion the staff soon warmed up to us but would say that It was difficult getting into the room because the key kept getting stuck, also it takes a while to get staff on the phone staff are very helpful when getting them so would suggest keeping on trying if having difficulty.

It was very comfortable. Tea and coffee provided. Clean room. Comfortable bed. Lively location. Well heated room with good lighting from the window during the day. TV with range of channels available. Very nice bathroom just without many soaps.

We were unfortunate ordering breakfast the next day, the staff were unorganized and left us waiting for breakfast for an hour which we eventually gave up on. The service for the people staying was less than the bar patrons. The rooms were also not soundproof. You could not hear the bar but you could hear other patrons in their rooms and doors quite loudly.

The management and staff are top draw. The rooms are comfortable and the cleaning staff are always available to top up anything in the room. We always stay at this hotel as its on the main road and walking distance from the local train station. There are local bus services with a stop outside or round the nearest road corner depending on your destination. Although we fly into the area there is a large carpark with the hotel.

The only thing is if you are too old or disabled there are steps to negotiate to get to rooms and a fire door button release as well. Nothing bothered us though.
