The Clifton

We had a reasonable choice of breakfast with pleasant and helpful table service staff. We didn't ask for more but there was no buffet we could raid! The breakfast room was very well presented albeit slightly cramped - but I am rather large. South Shields is far better than some might imagine and we were excellently located for the large beach, nearby shops and a large park with a lake. There were plenty of food premises located nearby. Other than along the coast, the road system could be a bit daunting but there was fairly easy access to public transport into Newcastle and around the area. The nearby ferry across the Tyne was convenient and cheap to use. Our room at the back at the top gave us a view over nearby houses and the antics of the seagulls and other birds kept us entertained! It also meant that there was no noise from traffic. Food was also available to non-residents throughout the day. We never had a problem parking in the streets nearby which were quite popular with day visitors.

There was really nothing not to like. We wouldn't have expected one but it may be worth mentioning that there was no lift for anyone who has a difficulty with stairs. However, we were told that they would try and accommodate anyone who has such difficulties-with a lower room.

High standard room with regard to decor and facilities so it was easy to forget that The Clifton is a bed and breakfast establishment, rather than a hotel. Good choice at breakfast, which was served quickly. I appreciated the electric fan in my room in the hot weather. Friendly, helpful staff. Thank you for the help with my case. Good location, midway between beach and metro. Close to parks and leisure centre too. Just under a mile stroll to ferry to North Shields.

Nothing to dislike! My room was at the top of the house so it was hot in this current sunny weather, but an efficient electric fan was provided so no problem.

The clifton is every thing you wish for when booking hotel /guess house, great position for bars restaurants shops, also the beach and parks and parking, the staff were polite, friendly and nothing was too much trouble for them, the room was spotless and the bed very comfortable and not forgetting the breakfast you had a great choice, I had the full English 😋 this was the second time I've started and booked again for December . PS no I'm nothing to do with the clifton and I would recommend it 100 % to family and friends.

Has I've said about everything the hotel and south shields the bars, pubs were very friendly well worth a visit if you have never been and I would recommend the clifton.

Thought the breakfast was a bit overpriced being a £10 upgrade and even then some options having a supplement on top of that like another £3 for an omelet.

The hotel was very clean, nicely decorated, I liked the fact it was all keyless. It was in a brilliant location. Breakfast was lovely and really tasty and a good choice of menu. The room was nice and had everything thing we needed for a nice stay, I would definitely stay again in the future x

The only tiny things I can moan about is that we put the do not disturb sign on the door as I thought we are only there 2 nights so didn't need the room doing but it was still done, which isn't a problem really but wanted to mention it, plus didn't really see the hosts which again isn't a problem but they were busy with the cafe and then not available in the evening.

Broken blind at the middle window between bedroom & bathroom, had to wind it up & down by rolling the blind. Bedroom could do with a curtain over the doorway as the middle window let in too much light in, especially from the hotels lighting outside. Booking stated breakfast included, advised on arrival that that was only for a continental breakfast, cooked breakfast was £10 extra each per day. Was told that it’s a mistake on booking.com’s side however, the Clifton has costumer details on booking so the hotel could advise on this instead of letting the poor person that books you in to tell you. I’m sure they get some disgruntled costumer’s!

The staff were all very friendly, the hotel was very clean and the room was very comfortable. We needed a taxi and the hotel staff were happy to book this for us. Batteries for the TV remote were replaced quickly and the missing bath towel provided promptly.

The £1 charge for extra hot water to top up our tea pot at lunch. It wasn't until a day before arrival that we learned "breakfast included" only included cereal and toast. A full English was available at £10 per person per night.

The ad said that breakfast was incluided. When I arrived I was asked for un aditional 10GBP for the English breastfast saying that the breastfast incluided on the price was the continental one. That could be fine with me. Surprise: Coffee, cereals and toast with jam or preserve. Not fresh fruit or cheese or ham... I was told that I was upgraded to a room with double bed...they never said that next door was a little babay, who was very good and only cry a little bit once a day.

Service and breakfast excellent. The shower was powerful and hot. For a person who suffers with many mattresses this one was very comfortable.

The room was the smallest I have stayed in for over 30 years of business travel. I had to step sideways into the shower as the access and shower unit were so small. Once in I could hardly move. The vanity sink was so small I could only get the kettle to put water in at an angle and as I attempted to remove it most of the water content disappeared down the plughole

Extremely impressed with the place from start to finish. We were greeted and made to feel very welcome this is so important to me The room was immaculately clean the facilities provided excellent The keyless system is fantastic. The building itself is so well maintained and when it come to breakfast superb probably the best breakfast I’ve had in a B&B ever ,it is clearly professionally managed the decor is beautiful, and I will definitely rebook when I come back to South Shields
