Victorian hotel which has recently been taken over! Decorated in new old fashioned wallpaper to match the hotel. Receptionist was very friendly and helpful. We stayed in February when everything closed down and out of season so no food available. Receptionist told us we could go to the only pub the Royal and order Chinese takeout and either eat at pub or if we wanted at the hotel. we opted for the pub as it was much warmer.

Unable to gain access to the building as the front door was shut and locked. Had to ring Paymans and ask them to ring reception to let us in, turns out Reception is 2 flights up on a level with the car park at the back. No information about a car park at the back!!

The hotel is just walking distance to the pier and coop shop. there are a lot of restaurants around the area as well. A perfect place if you want to explore around orkney's highlights such as skara brea, ring of brodgar and yesnaby cliffs. there is a cycle hire near the hotel as bus times are really hard to come by. I like my room, despite is budget friendly, it has the view of the sea and a decent space. Receptionist Ula is amazing and approachable, she greeted me at the entrance and oriented me to the place such as fire exit, alarm tests (at a certain day) and the restaurant for breakfast, shes also knowledgeable around the area. There are other workers during that time as they are doing a bit of renovation but everyone is friendly and welcoming. the renovation didnt bother me at all. i had a good nights sleep and the bed is so comfortable. The second day I met Ellie, another receptionist which is also great, we had a good conversation about Orkney. would come back again and definitely book to this place again

The location is excellent, right in the centre and nr the ferry. The staff were very helpful, polite and responsive. It was clean and the room was big, comfy beds and decent shower over bath.

They really should say it's dry at booking (I don't drink but husband wasn't impressed). We didn't want breakfast so that didn't bother us but it would be good to have option. It's not clear if the car park is real or not - it is, we found it! And round the back, not a great entrance via a fire door to it.

Fantastic central location, especially for the Orkney Folk Festival. Walk everywhere in Stromness. Very comfy bed, warm rooms, strong Wi-fi signal, free parking and great breakfasts every morning. iain and Chrissy were so friendly, welcoming and efficient. We felt a bit sad to leave after such a great week. Although the Stromness Hotel is not licenced, the Ferry Inn, Royal Hotel and British Legion bars are conveniently close.

The hotel’s hallways, main stairwell, and other shared spaces have a beautifully restored antique charm that might make you think the rooms are going to be quaint but perhaps tired or rustic— not so! Our room was the most spacious and tastefully updated we stayed in during several weeks of traveling in northern Scotland. The hotel is a lovely and well situated home base from which to enjoy Stromness’s little downtown and explore Orkney Island’s fascinations.

Good central location with private parking. Nice staff, didn’t really see too much of them due to the short stay. Late checkin not a problem (9pm) I didn’t have the breakfast. It’s not a modern hotel but it was more than adequate for my needs. Value for money.

The confirmation process was very laboured unlike other hotels I’d booked recently. There were 2 other confirmations I had to agree with (agree to be charged for any infringement) I felt that if I’d so much as left a little mark anywhere in the room I’d be charged substantially extra -to be taken off my credit card. It’s just that I’ve never been pressured like this before, it made me uncomfortable. And the signature app you used just about had me cancelling the booking. It did not appear to work very well (and I was using data and not WiFi which made me agitated)

Location is wonderful, and one of the main reasons for our choice. Beds comfortable, a quiet room, plenty of hot water and good Wi-Fi connection.

It is all a bit quirky and dependent on the sterling efforts of just a few staff, so for example the chef not being able to come in means no hot breakfast. The no alcohol rule is a daft marketing strategy for a hotel in the Highlands and Islands, but we did know about it when we booked.

We loved this hotel! It’s wonderfully nostalgic (others have said tired but it’s not it feels homely and fresh but old fashioned in a good way). Beautiful views, staff were friendly, location is amazing, price is good, breakfast is good! This hotel is perfect just the way it is, to refit it into a soulless ‘holiday inn‘ style hotel would be a huge sadness, I hope it stays the same for years to come. This hotel is a real treasure and a wonderful base for exploring Orkney.

The breakfast was copious, well presented and tasty. The porridge was a wee bit stodgy.

We all know the facade n entrance needs some TLC. The room was well presented n clean. Maybe a bit of dust on unobtrusive areas like the bars under the chairs and around the window edges, but nothing really to detract from the whole. Probably the stairs need to be brightened up a bit.
