A very impressive hotel set in beautiful grounds near the M5. Huge pillared entrance greats you on arrival and your expectations are raised as you enter the classic hallway and reception spaces. Ideal stop over for travelling to Cornwall as we did. Great facilities for weddings and such like with a dedicated exterior pavilion and stunning photo locations. Pleasant and helpful staff and an excellent self-service breakfast.

We were in one of the new wing bedrooms which was a long walk away from the central hub and dining spaces, so a bit of a trek for the older or infirm residents. Room was basic, and no better than a Premier Inn to be honest. OK, so we didn’t pay top dollar but our expectations on arrival were left disappointed by the room ambience which was clean but basic. Surprisingly for such a huge hotel there were hardly any public spaces to sit and relax in during the evening. Ok for a one night stay, but we wouldn’t have wanted to stay much longer as we felt like ‘Prisoners in Cell Block H’ in the new wing room we had. Meals were also expensive with no local options nearby.

We stayed outside the main house, in a spacious room with a front window overlooking the park, garden and parking lot. The manor and other buildings (2 levels) are a whole complex connected inside and out. I was at the opposite end of the manor, swimming pool, spa and restaurants, and I must confess that to get back to my room I got lost the first time. Going to the manor is easy because there are signs in all the corridors. The 1853 restaurant has a good menu, but with few options for vegetarians (2 or 3), and mainly no protein. You have to make a reservation to eat there. The Atrium Bistro Bar has part of the menu from the other restaurant and more casual food such as sandwiches, pizza, etc. The kitchen closes much later there and you don't have to book. In both I ate very well and with an excellent presentation on the plate. All the staff, reception and restaurant, very friendly and always with a smile. Everything very clean. The hotel area is very quiet, secluded. The hotel has a huge garden behind and a large outdoor terrace for eating or having a drink. We used the pool (very clean), jacuzzi, gym for free and the spa for a paid treatment. The beauty of the Manor is fantastic. It has many different spaces with armchairs and sofas to sit down to talk, have a drink or coffee, both in the hall and on the first floor (quieter). We stayed for 3 days and we did not leave the hotel and gardens. Fantastic and cheap if you don't choose expensive rooms (suits).

The only drawback is that the sink did not have a water mixer tap and the taps were very short, the water jet fell almost next to the edge of the sink. I think that changing the faucet is not a high cost (19 pounds plus labor), and it would make the room not have an annoying detail, washing with extremely cold or extremely hot water, plus it bothers that the jet is next to the edge.

The hotel was beautiful, and the grounds were well worth a wander in. The main restaurant was great, I felt like I was at a Michelin restaurant. And the breakfast was perfect every day. The bedroom was huge and the bed was comfortable. There was plenty of storage and a sofa as well as a desk and coffee table and reading table. The spa too was brilliant, the staff were helpful and always smiling, and the facilities were brilliant.

The Atrium bar seemed very overpriced for what was being served, similar prices to the main restaurant, and the staff there weren't as attentive as anywhere else. The female changing room in the spa, being situated next to the sauna and above the pool, was too warm to effectively dry off, and there was no air-conditioning to moderate the high temperature. The bathroom in the room was rather old; the grouting between the tiles was discoloured, and the sink around the plug hole was heavily scratched. There was also no conditioner provided, just shampoo and body wash.

Beautiful location, building was stunning! Staff were so friendly and helpful, from check in to check out. Great that had charging points for cars Atrium menu was great and not a bad price for a hotel. Great to see families of all ages at this property.

As the double bed was on wheels, when you sat on it, the bed moved which showed that behind the headend, hadn’t been cleaned for sometime sadly. A quick vacuum would soon sort it out. From an IPCC point of view, sadly a little lacking. Perhaps it’s the NHS in me!

Absolutely love this hotel! It was my second visit, although my husband has stayed there many times on business. I love the splendor of the place. The staff are amazing and always so polite. Our room was the same as last time, overlooking one of the courtyards. Nice, big bed and outside space with chairs if we wanted it. The upgrade of the electric charge points was good. We also got to meet Lady Grey this time and give her the dreamies I'd brought for her. We'll definitely be back again.

Nothing to dislike as such but the bathroom needs a shower upgrade. The shower curtains are really annoying.

The buffet style breakfast was plentiful and delicious with loads and loads of choices ranging from a scrumptious full English, a divine selection of little sweet pastries, a vast range of fresh fruits, yogurts, cold meats and cheeses, toast, crusty breads, cereals, in fact everything you could possibly want. There was absolutely no chance of leaving that dining room hungry. This fabulous hotel makes you feel as if you are in an oldy worldy stately home, mansion or gothic castle. There is a definite air of grandeur everywhere, and you could easily imagine that you are guests of the Lord or Lady of the manor! The grounds itself are packed with picturesque views, with the addition of a beautiful scenic walk through the stunning arboretum. There are interesting things to discover around every nook and cranny. There is even a touching little pet cemetery and a quaint little bug house. Theres loads of places to sit and relax inside the main building, with comfy chairs, a bar, a tea room and even a library. We didn’t use the spa or swimming pool but we’ll definitely give them a go next time we come, and we will definitely come again. We thoroughly recommend this fantastic venue, and for anyone thinking of getting married, the marvellous orangery would be absolutely perfect, and wedding photos taken in front of these buildings and in the surrounding grounds would be amazing. The staff were very polite and approachable and did everything they could to ensure your stay was comfortable and enjoyable. Our room was in the courtyard, it was a pet friendly accommodation as we brought our dog. We were so touched to see that a cute comfy pet bed along with food and water bowls were provided. The room was huge, clean, comfortable and elegant. Yes some may think it could probably do with updating, but I thought the fact that is wasn’t renovated to the modernised standard that I believe some of the rooms in the main building are, added to its stateliness and charm.

we found nothing to dislike

Lovely atmospheric place and gardens

No help with luggage on getting to the room which was quite a trek. Restaurant was average in the evening. Breakfast was awful. Self serve and just not enough room. They were constantly running out including hot water for tea and the coffee machine ran out as well. When you finally managed to get what you wanted and sat down, people crowding round you queuing while you're trying to eat. Not good at all. The continental offered pastries and yoghurt. No cheese, ham or rolls. I was going to have a continental due to the queuing and waiting for top ups to the full english but not paying for the overpriced breakfast for a couple of pastries!!!

The accommodation was really nice, a very impressive estate. The room was quite basic but I guess you get what you pay for which was fair enough. The gardens were nice as well although I was expecting it to be much bigger. We had the impression that it's a very big estate. We had in mind to go for long walks but there's not really anywhere to go. Anyway, we enjoyed our stay, the estate is gorgeous, and the staff is friendly, especially this guy Alex who served us in the Atrium bar on the 1st night and then outside in the garden + the Teepee. He was professional and went above and beyond to make our dinner as enjoyable as possible.

The breakfast was a bit disappointing. Although you have lots of variety, we didn't find it very yummy. Some of the cooked options had a funny taste which kind of left us with not a lot of options to try. Also, although not the hotel's fault, there were lots of wasps in the garden which prevented us from actually enjoying the day in the garden.

It’s an amazing estate and the outdoor area is beautiful. There is a spa facility on site which offers treatments. Free yoga class is available for residents as well which you need to book into.

The pool is on the smaller side so you will need to book a session in advance to avoid disappointment. I notice the breakfast as the Atrium and at the main restaurant serve slightly different options. The main restaurant serves cold meat and cheese but the Atrium doesn’t. The restaurant also wasn’t flexible with the afternoon tea drink options. My husband doesn’t drink any hot drinks so he would like to swap it for a coke or juice. But this was not allowed and we had to pay extra for the cold drink instead.
