Galtres Lodge Hotel & Forest Restaurant

Breakfast was really good. Had full English, husband had the porridge which was full of apples and nuts and peanut butter, outstanding! Lovely coffee as well. Had dinner there on the first night which was absolutely beautiful just a simple steak and chips, onion rings etc and was able to order a Yorkshire pud and jug of gravy as a side which was amazing! Bed was amazingly comfy but asked for extra pillows which was no trouble for the lovely staff to provide.

The ONLY thing was the location of the room, at booking I didn’t realise it was a top floor room, just saw a pic of the copper bath & glazed over 😂 but we found the stairs a bit of a challenge, especially my husband who has had a hip replacement. Also I thought there was a shower in the en suite but there was just a sink and toilet and a shower mixer on copper tub. But these were errors on my part not the hotels, I failed to read descriptions properly! Will definitely book again but different room up not as many stairs.

Lovely Hotel. Small and full of character. Fantastic location. Arrived early went to drop luggage off. Our room was ready, so was able to check in early. Was offered help up to our room with our case too. Staff really helpful and friendly, great breakfasts. Lovely Cocktails!! Will definitely go there again. We think, great value too . Less than a 15 minute walk from the railway station. Already recommended to family.

No negatives about the hotel at all. The only thing l will say is there is no lift, which is NOT A NEGATIVE . But worth considering if you are less abled.

The hotel was perfectly located in the center of town and had all of the charm we'd hoped for! At the end of a long trip at historic hotels and lodges (some of which missed the mark a bit) the Galtres Lodge was a breath of fresh air (literally, the window opened and there was a fan in the room!) Everyone was very kind and accommodating, breakfast was fantastic, and our room was generally pretty comfortable. In terms of price, location, and comfort, it would be hard to beat!

The historic lodge has a few rough spots (squeaky floors, chipping paint), but so much charm that it was entirely forgivable! The bed was a bit hard and there was no soap rack/dish in the shower, but overall it was a terrific stay!

The location is fantastic, everything within a few minutes walking distance. The staff were always readily available and most helpful. The service, along with the breakfast, was excellent and couldn't have asked for more. A very quirky, but pleasent hotel.

The shower cubicle within our room was way too small. Had to turn shower off, before opening door, in order to wash/soap one's self before re-entering the shower to rinse off. Also, due to location, noise levels are to be expected until early hours, but wasn't happy that throughout the whole of the night and into early hours of the morning, vast amounts of lorry deliveries and refuse collection was taking place....very noisy indeed.

The hotel itself was lovely just a little rough around the edges. The bonus for us was the restaurant just downstairs which we did have a great meal in and breakfast (although was cold) the next morning. The location was nice although don't stay here if you don't want to be woken by bin men at 4am luckily I wear earplugs. It was my partners birthday and there was a nice little surprise in the room for him which we did appreciate.

Our bathroom really needed updating . The tap on the basin wobbled, the shower door around the seals was actually quite dirty and the floor tiles were coming unstuck. The windows in our actual room wouldn't stay open (I know they were sash) but I think they are quite dangerous as one slam down and one of the window frames was completely rotten so that would of smashed completely. Just needed a little tlc

Fantastic location, next to the Minster. Our room was quiet, it overlooked the green. We booked a small room so obviously it was small, but we could see the Minster from the window, and lovely exposed roof beams.

The only less than perfect item was the breakfast pancakes. Everything else we ate from the breakfast menu was excellent. The food in the restaurant was very good too, so we ate there twice rather than using more touristy places.

Absolutely everything about our stay was wonderful! The room is gorgeous (from the ceiling beams, to the tin bath, to the bed - one of the comfiest I've ever slept in). It was cosy and romantic. There is a view of the Minster out of the window. That brings me to the location; the hotel is perfectly placed for everything you could want in York. It is next to the Minster and city walls, is surrounded by shops, bars, pubs, and restaurants, and is no more than a 5-10 minute walk to any of York's other main attractions (The Shambles, the chocolate experience etc). The staff were so friendly and helpful! From offering help carrying our bags to our rooms to storing our bags all day long after we checked out to let us explore the city more comfortably. They allowed us to tailor our breakfasts to suit our preferences (breakfasts, which, by the way, were so tasty!) We will 100% use this hotel again! It is lovely to see an independent business doing so well <3

Location is great. Staff are friendly and helpful. Bed linen is nice quality. Mattress is comfortable. Dinner was good and well priced for a city centre restaurant.

Plastic cups in bathroom should be replaced with glass. Bath towels are small, thin and not luxurious - very disappointing. Forest restaurant is very strange. Lots of artificial greenery draped around the place. Themed restaurants went out in the 80’s so really not sure what they’re trying to achieve. Dreary, dust-collecting interior which is not appealing at all. Lots of potential and with a proper interior makeover it could be very special.

The room was fabulous, the service was excellent, the breakfast was delicious, and the location is perfect. My dietary requirements were catered for at breakfast with no issues, and were then remembered the following day. Everywhere was really clean and the décor was lovely. If I’m visiting York again, this would definitely be my first choice of hotel. We all had a fantastic stay.

Our room was on the top floor and the first night we stayed got extremely hot in the room making it uncomfortable to sleep, but it was fine the second night.

The hotel was so central, exactly where we wanted to be. Our room (15) was beautiful and quiet considering it was right in the hustle and bustle. A lot of bird song in the morning as we were right at the top but I personally love that. The bath in the room was even bigger than expected and was a fabulous addition. The bed was incredibly comfortable and lots of channels on the TV should you need. The restaurant and courtyard garden were fabulous, very pretty and lovely food. Couldn’t fault the lovely staff. Honestly can’t say enough good things, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

Not a negative but had assumed there was a separate shower in the bathroom but there wasn’t, just the bath and a shower adaptor on the tap. Didn’t bother us as we made good use of the amazing bath but any longer than a 2 night stay I would probably miss a stand up shower but that’s just personal preference and why one should never assume.
