The location was excellent, very central and everything was within easy walking distance. The room, a small double, was well-equipped and the bed was very comfortable. I asked for quieter rooms (realising that as the hotel is in a central location this would be tricky), and the staff were very obliging. The fresh milk, water in the room, and generally amentities were very good, as was the cleaning. Everything you could need was provided.

Well, I hesitate to say this, as it's partly not the fault of the hotel, but the rooms were unbearably hot. Fans were provided (much appreciated), but I would imagine these rooms without air conditioning would be unliveable in the summer months. We stayed in the September heatwave, so 28/29 degrees. As hot weather will increasingly be an issue, even in York, with a warming climate, I think something will need to be done in the longer term to mitigate these problems. Breakfast was ok, but could have been better quality of products.

A lovely hotel. Booked a standard room as it had a bath with jacuzzi which was a bonus. Everything you could need for your comfort in the cozy room. Another bonus fresh milk given on arrival and just ask if more is needed. Double bed was very comfortable. Breakfast was served in the Cellar bar area with a conservatory. An excellent choice on breakfast menu and you could select anything you wished, we enjoyed a delicious cooked breakfast with plenty hot coffee. The staff were very courteous, attentive and very professional they always had a smile to greet you. Will definitely be back.

Nothing just wished I could have stayed longer

The location was perfect and the hotel was steeped in history. The staff couldn't be faulted. They were welcoming and helpful. The chilled water and fresh milk were much appreciated! My dinner in the restaurant was very good. Although I have made some observations below I really did enjoy my stay and would come again.

The size of the rooms reflected their history. Mine was very small and the bathroom tiny. An extra shelf would have been helpful for me for cosmetics and toiletries. There was no mirror to do a 'head to tail' check. My bed wasn't brilliantly made up but after mentioning it at reception it was dealt with very well. Breakfast choice was very limited and perhaps these days we expect a buffet style of breakfast rather than 'menu'.

Ideal location for planned activities - theatre and cookery school. Excellent breakfast. Room was good- size for city centre hotel. Comfortable bed. Spotless bed linen.

Shower curtain stained and had black mildew spots on it. When asked to be replaced it was replaced with one that was just as bad!! How does anybody think it is acceptable to have a shower curtain that has any kind of stains on it, let alone in a 5 star hotel .Had to ask again and eventually the curtain was replaced by a brand new one Would have liked larger cups...too small for a cup of tea. No pictures on the walls made room a little stark.

Lovely hotel in the best location for all the attractions in York city centre, that coupled with an excellent outside terrace with quality comfortable tables and chairs where you can eat, drink and enjoy the sunshine on a sunny day, also the breakfast selection was extensive and served hot and very testy, the hotel has an excellent ambience with lots of references to the judges and quirky furniture , it almost has a boutique feel about it, tge staff are all excellent, knowledgeable and very friendly, the room was spacious and well equipped and a good view from the window, luxurious toiletries in tge bathroom and complimentary Gin and Tonic was a nice little touch. There was just one thing that let it down, there wasn’t a safe room to leave cases until we were ready to leave to get our train home, so we had to pay £10 to keep the room for two more hours which was a cost that we didn’t want or expect to pay, this could easily be resolved as there seems to be a lot of space at tge bottom of tge stairs leading to the cellar bar where a cupboard could be placed and used to store cases, just a thought! Apart from that we would have scored tge hotel as excellent in all areas!

Nothing apart from the lack of secure space to leave cases until we were ready to leave, we ended up paying £10 extra to leave the cases in our room, we felt we had to do this as the hotel reception isn’t always manned and there are a lot of people coming in and out to use the bar.

Central location, very convenient for main attractions in York with attractive beer garden in front of Georgian house. Happy atmosphere and lots of life in the street, but not too noisy in the evenings. Very friendly, helpful staff offering to carry suitcases as we approached the hotel and willing to provide main meals all through the day. Excellent breakfast ordered from a wide choice and served to us at the table. We had a ground floor room which offered easy access to the informal dining room and beer garden. We would definitely choose to stay there again if visiting York.

If you are elderly or disabled, be aware that there is a steep winding outside staircase to enter the first floor hotel reception area, and there is no lift, but staff leapt forward to carry our luggage and ground floor rooms are available.

The location was perfect. It's a fairly long walk from the train station, but it's not hilly, so it was easy to manage. We had a room in a one-story side building. The room was beautiful and everything in it was super comfortable. The breakfast the next morning was great, and our server, Gina, was lovely. They stored our bags after checkout (but see my note on the negative things).

The location was loud until around 11 p.m. There were only 3 other doors outside our room, but the noise from people closing their doors was constant and much louder than you'd expect. The front exterior of the hotel hosts a bar, so it there was a lot of noise from people outside. Finally, there was a bit of a wait at the check-in desks two of the three times were went there. The last time, when we went back to pick up our bags, no one was there, so we took our bags and left. I was concerned that someone could have just wandered in and helped themselves.

Breakfast menu was good, beds very comfortable and brilliant mirror in room for makeup and hair styling - reception was amazing too.

we were situated in a twin room which was on the courtyard. The door opposite was the store room, in the morning the door slammed inbetween going in and out of the room, which was often in the morning and could be very noisy - staff chatting too, but overall an excellent stay. would have liked a small fridge in the room to keep the milk for tea.

Beautiful hotel, nice clean big rooms. We came to stay for my mum's birthday and the hotel put a lovely card and complimentary bottle of fizz into the room on arrival which was a really nice touch. Made her stay that little bit more special. Staff were really polite and nothing was too much trouble.

A little fridge in the room woudld have been nice with milk for the morning, as we didn't realise we needed to put the hanger on the door to get milk delivered the follow morning. For breakfast I had vegetarian, the sausages were vegetarian but just full of Veg rather than a 'meat' texture. Thought still really nice I woudl ahve preferred a more meat veggie sausage. We were in a room on the ground floor and early morning the hotel must have been having a stock delivery that was wheeld infront of our window which was a tad loud if you wanted a lay in.
