St Marys Guest House

Our room at the top of the guest house was roomy, warm and quiet The staff were brilliant, they just couldn't do enough for us. They truly made us feel at home. The breakfasts were superb, as much as we could eat. Overall, a top place to stay and one we would highly recommend.

These comments in noway distracts from my comments about. The ensuite in apartment 10 was a little on the small side, only to be expected in an older style property, however as I am over six feet tall, it did present me with a few challenges!! Having said that, I would still stay in apartment 10 again!

The staff at this hotel are just amazing! They're helpful, kind, considerate and can't do enough for you, especially when it comes to breakfast. The breakfast is just sensational with a lot of choices and the breakfast areas is cosy and fun. The location couldn't be any better - you just walk a few steps from the guest house and down a little path to the river. A few minutes stroll along the river, or cut through a beautiful park and you pop out next to York Minster. The guest house is a little dated, but for me and my wife that just added to the charm. The bed was very comfy with a large en-suite that was more than adequate. The guests were fun and from all over the world and there was a lot of playful banter with the staff each morning at breakfast, it really was a lovely stay. I would REALLY RECOMMEND staying here if you want to experience some real Yorkshire hospitality in a little boutique establishment right in the heart of the city, and if you stay I hope you'll leave a nice tip for the staff on your departure. Very convenient location on a primarily residential street about 12-15 minutes walk from the old centre of York meant that I was able to make Sunday's 4pm Evensong despite having only arrived at the property at 3:40pm. It is close to the riverside in one direction, nice for evening walks back from dinner, with short-cuts through Museum Gardens available when the park is open. Comfortable room, facing the rear of the property, on the first-plus-half-floor landing, had a quirky shower room down a couple of steps; both room and bathroom were very clean and tidy. Mornings set us up for a day's sightseeing with a good cooked breakfast and cold items; breakfast room clean and pleasant, with cheerful service. There was limited off-street parking, but the spot we got was great. The rail line runs nearby, so rooms to the front of the property might hear some noise.

I had been a little concerned no one would be at the property for arrival after 3pm, which felt more like an AirBnB than a guest house, but the manager sent a reassuring email about entering the property and included suggestions for evening dining if we arrived very late. Aside from that, the automated hall and stairwell lighting was slow to turn on as I ascended dark stairs and stepping out into dark landing was disconcerting. I hope the property considers resetting the timers and sensors.

We were allocated room 9, it was directly above the front door and overlooked the railway line. We weren't sure if either would affect our sleep quality, but guests were very quiet and we hardly noticed the trains. There were some lovely shortcuts to the main York Centre, during our walks to and from our lovely accommodation we fed squirrels, made friends with a number of local cats as well as coming across a fox! Nothing was too much trouble and we were made to feel very welcome. The bed was probably the comfiest I've slept in, breakfast was superb and the fried eggs, OMG cooked to sublime perfection, no crusty edges, lovely runny yolk, Highly recommend this lovely B&B, the one and only reason I couldn't give 100% Exceptional top marks, I love a soak in the bath after having the legs walked off me - but St Mary's, highly recommended and would love to return - thank you for a wonderful stay

Absolutely nothing

Room 2 ground floor, perfectly adequate for our 5 day stay. Staff very friendly and helpful advising on area shortcuts and things to see/do. Very convenient short walk (6 mins) to city centre shops etc great breakfast and served with a smile every day.

Train line was very very close to guest house and ran from early hours to almost midnight. That said the train went a slow pace due to proximity to residential homes within just 50 yds of track. Wasnt that much of a problem, but someone with children or light sleepers would probably be unhappy.

This guest house has several rooms. Our room was comfortable and a nice size in the guest house. We enjoyed sleeping with the window open, listening to the birds singing and feeling the fresh air! The location was very close to the train station; however, the neighborhood was quiet and peaceful. It is within walking distance to the city wall, The Shambles and market area, the shops and plenty of places to enjoy scones, restaurants and the lovely Museums Garden. It was also close to the river walk as well. The breakfast was nice. The staff was amazing and kind!

we arrived at the hotel and straight away was greeted by the propriety, showed us too our room which was situated on the ground floor at the rear of the property, the staff were very welcoming and friendly, and the cook came out to us and asked about my partner allergy to wheat, and told us that they had brought soya milk gluten free bread/cereal and sausages which we where very pleasantly surprised, we could not fault the staff and the guest house, would highly recommend this property to anyone who is looking for a place to stay, only a few mins from all attractions and city centre

Everything!! Fantastic accommodation within easy access and a lovely short walk to city centre. Staff went above and beyond to ensure our stay was enjoyable and couldnt do enough for us. Bed was so comfortable that it was difficult to get up in the morning for breakfast. Talking of which well and truly set you up for the day - and a massive 2 thumbs up 👍👍for the black pudding which i strongly suggest trying if available on the menu. Fantastic visit, wished we'd booked a longer stay. Would most definitely recommend to anyone considering visiting York. Caroline and everyone at St Mary's Guest House who made our visit, thank you so so much for your excellent hospitality. We will definitely be back in the future......and give plenty of notice to so hopefully black pudding will be available on the breakfast menu 👍🤓👍

Spacious room, even more so than expected. Staff is friendly, and they serve a good breakfast. Location seems a bit tucked away at first, until you discover the direct passage to the Dame Judi Dench Walk, and how the city centre is actually not that far away. Would recommend!

No major pain points. Some things to mention: bathroom is so big, it could have housed a bathtub with ease, such things are always appeciated. TV in our room was majorly undersized and many stations didn't even work.
