it was just so welcoming! i felt like i was a valued guest and my host was doing everything to make me feel comfortable. we were actually encouraged to bring friends into the lounge room, there was a honesty bar with very reasonably priced drinks, free plunger coffee and tea and very comfortable sofas. the building has character without being too frilly (it used to be a bank) and the rooms were comfortable. we are definitely going to be back.

fresh towels would have been nice..

Hotel located in a great location right on the esplanade in Penguin. The hotel is bespoke and the building is quite old but neat and tidy. The bed was very comfortable and we had a great night's sleep.

The only downside to the room we stayed in was the rather long and steep staircase to get to the first floor. I would not recommend the room to anyone with limited mobility. Couldn't really comment on the friendliness of the staff as we didn't actually see any but at least they answered their phone when we we needed some advice.

Big upstairs room. Plenty of storage chests. Big comfy bed. Bedlamp on already. Hot shower. Stylish decor. Plenty of heaters. Side view of the beach. The goods train line charmingly runs behind. Curtains & shades. CD/DVD player. TV had netflix etc. Reception lounge room had sofas, books, CDs, music playing. My plane was late so not as much time in Penguin as I would've liked. IGAs either side of hotel. Popular cafes in short walking distance. Also P.O. Friendly quiet village that pioneered Australia's banning of plastic bags.

I don't prefer stairs. Didn't meet owner.

Cute place with lots of character. Reception was very pleasant and we really didn't see anyone after that. Right on the main street across from the beach and we were able to park right there on the street. Easy drive to Burnie where we found a lovely restaurant on the water. After dinner we walked a few minutes along the boardwalk to watch the penguins come in. Penguin is a lovely town.

The shudders in the bathroom needed a little dusting and the bathroom was quite small.

Great welcoming message sent when we booked the property - and closer to our stay, we got sent all the information we needed to checkin. Because of Covid safety, there was minimal contact when checking in. Very nice looking entry into the hotel. Room views were nice, we were at the side of the hotel but towards the front so we could see the sea from our side windows. Bed super comfy, shower great and the amenities provided in the room were really nice. Microwave, toaster, kettle, coffee pod machine, little coffee plungers and other assorted items made it a great stay. Perfect temperature when we stayed, but we could see that there was also no shortage of heaters or coolers in the room if required. Because of covid your room is not disturbed whilst you stay, but if you need anything at all, you just ring and they will supply which was good.

When we got into the room, the toilet seat hadnt been cleaned underneath very well and we also had to ask for soap. Windows are a bit rattly if open and its a breezy day. But despite these 2 things, everything else was great.

Wonderful location, right across from the water. Host very friendly. The bar in the foyer is great, and added touches like complementary sherry and freshly ground coffee were most appreciated.

The deluxe double room doesn't have a sea view - despite what it says in the listing - unless you crane your head and look out of the bathroom window. But that said, it is a beautiful old building and has everything you need.

View of the sea is beautiful. Comfortable bed (the controls are fun), the bath with a view was fun, the towels were very good (fluffy but still absorbent) and the balcony was good (although we didn't get to use it much as we didn't stay in Penguin long).

The hotel is between two IGA's so delivery trucks and their very cheery (noisy) drivers woke us up before dawn. (Not sure anything can be done about it; they can't move the hotel itself). The step down into the suite startled us (despite the sign) the drop down may cause an older person an injury. There is no flat surface near the bath for towels (or champagne glasses / plastic cups) so it was a bit messy getting from the bath to the towel rack - we didn't want to leave our towels on the floor beside the tub. The room seems to have been set up as a nod to a lavish romantic couples night away but in reality the functionality lets it down. A shame as a lot of effort seems to have been put in to try and create something special.

Terrific central location, right opposite the beach with short walking distance to everywhere in penguin. Very reasonably priced accomodation with free tea, coffee etc and fresh fruit. Modern comfortable room with ensuite in period building. A number of good places to eat very close by and right next to iga supermarkets. Can easily park on the street outside, no parking meters to worry about. Short walking distance to neptune pub and penguin brewing company. We ate and drank in both and thought they were good value for money. The brewing co also had live music sunday afternoon which was a great atmosphere.

Nothing to complain about!

This was one of the best small hotels we have stayed in. The Madsen is a lovely comfortable hotel. The vibe is stylish & relaxed. We spent an evening in the lounge area reading & relaxing. There’s a great selection of wines & beer with honesty system for payment. We could help ourselves to fresh fruit & fresh ground coffee. The rooms were quiet and comfortable. There was everything we needed.

Nothing.

We liked the location, decor, and the ambiance of the hotel. The staff was friendly and helpful. We got there a bit late in the evening and we were still greeted happily.

The facilities could use a tiny little bit of a spruce-up.
