I arrived earlier than expected and the owner couldn't check me in straight away because the room wasn't ready, and he had workman everywhere as he's in the process of refurbishment. Despite this he didn't keep me waiting long and upgraded my room to a huge bay-fronted one overlooking the transporter bridge. Shame the bridge was also being refurbished as you can't currently see it working. The road was noisy, especially at rush hour but this didn't bother me, it was quiet enough when sleeping and the room was worth it. The owner was very helpful arranging take-out meals (no kitchen during my visit), the beer was lovely and Sky Sports in the bar - what's not to like? Great location for Newport Docks, characterful old building which promises to be even better when the refurbishment is completed. The old terracotta bar is wonderful, I bet it could tell some tales! The owner (Raj) was very helpful during my stay.

It would have been better had the kitchens been working, but I'm sure it will be better for guests when the work is completed. The availability of good take-out food was really useful. If you have a room at the front expect some road noise, the hotel is on a busy junction - however it is quieter overnight and didn't bother me at all whilst working during the day.

Well situated on Coastal Road, opposite tourist attraction, Transport Bridge, Newport, Wales. Owned by lovely family who are polite and friendly. Sincere welcome & true hospitality. Tastefully decorated with original features lovingly retained, (Art Deco stained glass windows, lighting, ceramic tile panels, inlaid mosaic flooring, Victorian building with ornate carved wood etc. Sash windows supplemented with effective secondary double glazing creating well lit, warm, cosy atmosphere. Ample space & comfort provided for individual need. (Accessible for those with disabilities -free car park (securely gated overnight), ramp, lift, choice of rooms with walk in shower. Attentive staff on hand to supplement requirements). Dietary needs considered, ordered food provided fresh, (Bistro not yet open to public). Small bar if one would like to socialise with more than enough space to extend into larger lounge, (could be cordoned off for private functions

Nothing to dislike!

The location was perfect for being not too far from the railway station and the venue we went to for the party we attended. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful, sorting taxis etc. We were also invited to a buffet during the evening but unfortunately we were attending a party elsewhere so couldn't go. The bar was lovely too.

If I had to be really picky it would be to say that the towels were a little tired and some of the decor needed a spruce. We had a good chat to the owner who has only been there for around 12 months and is refurbishing the restaurant so I am sure the minor issues will be sorted in time

The staff were friendly and helpful. When I arrived, I was met at the door to help me with my bags. Unfortunately, the first room had a leak in the bathroom but I was relocated without any hesitation in a lovely room at the back of the hotel where I could see my car. Free parking in a gated area that was locked at night for security. The rooms were well stocked with tea, coffee and hot chocolate. Lovely clean beds that were super comfortable. There were lots of towels and a heated towel rail. Plenty of storage space with all you could need including an iron and ironing board and a hair dryer. The receptionist organised a taxi so I could get to the station. Very accomodating. Always smiling. Lovely service from all staff members. There is a lounge and bar, but I did not make use of these during my stay. Despite the negatives listed below, I would go back to this hotel because of the great service and value for money.

I feel terrible complaining because the staff were gorgeous but one thing I always expect is a clean bathroom. Unfortunately, the first bathroom wasn't very clean. I wouldn't have used the shower due to the condition of the grout and it had a dirty drain. Luckily, I was relocated to a different room due to a leak from the toilet. The second room, much cleaner, but very cold. An electric heater had to be kept on for the entire night to keep the room temperature bearable. This made me a little nervous and as a result I didn't sleep very well.

We couldn't have felt more welcome at this quirky lovable little family run hotel. They have only taken it over 8 months ago but it has real charm and character. Easy taxi ride a couple of mins into town. Half an hour taxi to Cardiff. Great parking facilities really useful..and included. Excellent value for money. Almost instant response to my messages/queries through booking.com msg service. Thank you.

Nothing not to like.... Will be great once the restaurant is up and running later in the year.

The Waterloo Hotel is a beautiful building, rooms are really clean and we had a very comfy bed. We had a room at the front of the building with a huge bathroom. This is a family run hotel and the owners and team are so welcoming, nothing is too much trouble for them. We booked full English breakfast which was excellent. We will definitely back, it would be good to try out the restaurant when they open up. A good location for Newport (20.min stroll) and Cardiff. Would highly recommend.

Everything was great.

Booked for an overnight business visit. While the location is close to the docks and the building is historic right next to the Transporter Bridge (one of only two in the UK) and doesn't look particularly inviting from the outside the rooms were comfortable and to a high standard. Staff were very friendly and helpful. We arrived late and left early so did not try breakfast or the bar.

Stayed because i couldn’t book a well known brand of hotel that i normally stay in and had to travel 15 minutes out my way to get here.Glad they was all booked up. This family run hotel was great.Owner couldn’t do enough. Talked about cricket and general chitchat in the bar.Room 18 was spacious and clearly well maintained. Will definitely go back if in the area.

honestly couldn’t fault.

The staff was really nice, in the inside the hotel is really beatiful with a really beatiful private bar. The rooms where clean and with a lot of space. Crossing the road, you will find Fanny's an amazing original Wales Cafeteria with nice breakfast at really fair prices.

The location, the Hotel is located in front of the old dock, so the neibourhood is a little bit shady and far from the center train and bus stations with not a good connection of local buses. (30 min walking)

New owners who had recently taken over were very nice and accommodating. Very welcoming Although in a rough area of Newport was comforting to know that the bar downstairs was not open to the public. Rooms comfortable. Safe locked forecourt to keep car overnight.

Limited selection on food but owners did explain they were in middle of refurnishing kitchen. Soap/shower gels were bottles which have been used by several visitors rather than new small ones for each guest. Location in rough area
