As most previous comments suggest, this hotel has a lot of quirks. To many this is a negative but to others a positive. It all depends on what you want from a hotel. The positives include a unique position in the centre of town in a street that contains many good restaurants. If you need to stay in Stortford itself there is no alternative. It is also reasonable value for money. And a refurbishment of the rooms a year or so ago made a big difference. I believe all rooms contain coffee and tea making facilities and a flat screen tv. The beds are comfy and clean. The George is many centuries old and that can be experienced when walking around it with steps up and down and irregular shaped rooms. The reception area is not the most welcoming of places. An old wooden door on the side of the building always open/ ajar and a small unmanned reception desk with phone number to call if requiring attention eg when checking in. There are a host of little things which might be too much for some people. For instance in my room there is a bathroom mirror with three identical lights above it. One light is bright white, one gives a softer diffused light and the third doesn’t work at all whereas all are supposed to be identical. Secondly there are no coat hangers or wardrobe for shirts or trousers just a few hooks on the wall. Thirdly the kettle will not fit in the basin to allow water in to fill it. Bit of a challenge that one. If you can accept these sorts of things - different for each room - then this hotel might be for you. If not then find a modern hotel on the outskirts or nearer the airport with all mod cons and each bedroom identical. I have stayed here a few times and will continue to do so. There are no meals on site but many restaurants literally just a few seconds walk away. The manageress is friendly and helpful, location ideal, comfy beds, reasonable price. And that’s all I’m looking for

Very good location, close to the airport, with excellent access to the airport by public transport even in the middle of the night! I do not understand these negative opinions, after all, everything about this hotel is described on the website! It is true that there may be no one at the reception, but just call and someone will always come. Lots of shops and restaurants nearby. We had a nice room with a bathroom and above all it was very clean .. and there is really nothing to complain about, you can always go to the centre of London. I highly recommend this place, we will definitely come back.

The George is situated near the centre of Bishop Stortford on a quiet street. It is an impressive heritage building. It is within a short walk of many affordable restaurants. The local people whom we met were very friendly and helpful

The main door into the hotel was closed, but not locked. The reception was untended apart from a note stating that we should ring a phone number printed on the note. However, a call to the number resulted in clear instructions as to how to get to our room. I looked on the fact that the building was open and untended as an indication of how safe the area was. Luckily, I was right!

The hotel is clean and convenient for Stansted airport. Situated in the town centre, for breakfast just walk down the hill and find two cafes to choose from. I stay here when I need a room in Stortford, never been disappointed.

The only problem with the property is it's situated opposite a very busy restaurant and a night club and on Friday and Saturday they don't stop partying until the early hours, so if your a light sleeper it's not for you. But you will pay double or more for any other hotel in the area.

This is a really old property . Some parts are 16th century . Floors are uneven . It’s a bit rickety but I love that . i had stayed here before it had the conversion and it was a beautiful old Pub /hotel . There is a Prezzo underneath now which was a shock . i had a great nights sleep & my room was spotless . i needed somewhere close to the airport and paid a really fair price . I had a good stay & would stay again . next time I’m staying in a haunted room ! because it is Haunted I did a ghost hunt in there 2009 !!!

Comfy room without alot of fuss. Nice clean basic room. Everything was clean and tidy just stopping in overnight. Catch the 510 Bus from the airport for 2 lbs. Download google maps before hand and you can use the free WiFi to find your way around if you do not have cellphone service in Europe or UK. Nice quiet spot after 12 when the 4 pubs around it close.

Room was spacious, not luxurious but had everything we wanted for a pre airport stay. Bed lovely and comfortable and bathroom/shower sparkling new. Parking very close and only have to pay until 8.30pm with early morning departure. Location superb on High St lots of restaurants. Easy drive to Stansted in the morning.

Entrance small and a bit scruffy with a tel no to call. No probs though Dee soon came down and took us to our room.

After climbing a few stairs and going though what felt like a door from Harry Potter, we were shown to a lovely spacious room, which I have to say I was very surprised at. It was very clean and well laid out. The bathroom was a good size with a walk in shower which had really good pressure to it.

No parking on site so we had to park over night in a public cark park, which I ended up with a parking fine due to not getting a new ticket before 7.30 am! The mattress for me was too firm but you can't please everyone

This is a handy little hotel for our purpose. With shops being a very short distance away, it meant we could buy food etc from supermarkets and save a lot of money. The shower is lovely and clean towels, teas, coffee etc were all provided as needed. The staff were pleasant and didn't disturb unnecessarily.

The only real drawback was the noise from outside, which can't be helped- traffic, nightclubs etc. But there are double-glazed windows, which did help.

Double room with en-suite which was perfectly good for my needs. Hotel is in a great location close to bars and restaurants. Room I had was opposite 'Host' which does stay open until the early hours of the morning (around 2am) so the room I had wouldn't be ideal for anyone who wants an early night as it gets quite noisy outside. It was fine for me as I had a late night anyway.

Nothing I didn't like. I'd already stayed at the George before so knew what to expect. Wouldn't have re-booked if wasn't happy with the hotel / location. Each time I've been the ladies who have shown me to the room have been very friendly. No complaints from me.
