Lumley Castle is an amazing historic building, so different from most hotels .It is set in lovely grounds and not too far from Durham. The dining room was particularly impressive and we enjoyed our breakfasts there .

There was a great deal of noise late into our first night Whilst this was due to inconsiderate people in the room above us I think the hotel should consider improving the sound insulation of the rooms outside the main building .Our room was also rather cramped due partly to the arrangement and type of furniture The TV was also quite small.

We loved the castle state room. It was like stepping back in time (in a good way). The fittings and decor were delightful and the bed was comfortable. We enjoyed an undisturbed quiet night. Dinner was delicious and the service friendly and professional. Breakfast was the same - the Craster kippers hit the spot. Every interaction with staff was positive. Highly recommend the woodland walk behind the castle. Very relaxing after a lovely night.

The plumbing was quite loud and you could hear pipes from other rooms but that's absolutely to be expected in an ancient castle and we only heard it while we were already awake.

Room was amazing, food was exemplary and having worked at Gleneagles Hotel previously, the food was far better in my opinion. Staff were lovely and very helpful. All in all and excellent venue and one I will be back to visit socially. The whole venue gave a sense of comfort, well being and decadence without the silly hiked up prices. The mattress was brilliant and the most comfortable nights sleep I have had in along time!

Parking to get to the rooms was difficult just due to the number of vehicles trying to get into the courtyard and no bay marking. No disabled spaces that could be prebooked so to allow easier access to get to my vehicle. No electric charging points seen if you were to have this type of vehicle.

This is a charming, well run hotel set in beautiful surroundings and with a golf course for a garden! That close. The breakfast was brilliant and served very efficiently by charming staff. All members of staff were extremely friendly and helpful but if I have to single anyone out it would be Nathan who, because we needed to change rooms after one night, more about that in the didn't like section, cheerfully and willingly helped us with our baggage. I have no hesitation in recommending this hotel for it's charm and professional services but for anyone with even slight mobility problems I suggest they mention that when making a reservation.

Because I had not told them in advance that I have a mobility problem, I was allocated a beautiful room on the second floor in a part of the main building that does not have a lift. The stairs from first floor to second is part of the ancient Castle's very narrow stone spiral stair case and quite a challenge for anyone who is not fully fit. This is where my hero, Nathan, sprung into action, taking our 5 pieces up on day one and moving them down again to a ground floor room on day two. The ground floor room in the cottages was quite cold, well below comfort level but reception told me they would have provided an electric fire had I asked, I didn't.

Castle interior and our room were fantastic. Visible mould on bathroom grout however. Dinner was excellent and fantastic silver service, excellent. Breakfast not so good. They brought toast and tea first then forgot to take main order, so had to re-order toast and tea. 'Smashed' avocados were actually sliced, quite different and one of the poached eggs was underdone. Staff congregating at service station and chatting, joking. So some bad but offset by the grandeur of the place and professionalism of the evening staff in the dining room. Very helpful in sending on some clothing we had left in the wardrobe. We will return! Recommended.

The room was beautifully presented and clean, with all the necessary facilities, tea-making, iron, hairdryer etc. The castle itself is stunning and the dining room was beautiful with original features. It has been carefully thought-out to ensure diners' privacy and yet it is still very convivial (and clearly poplular!). The dinner we had was absolutely delicious. As a vegetarian I have rarely raved about hotel food, but this place is a real find. The staff were delightful - very helpful and happy to make an extra effort.

The bar was a bit noisy from clattering bottles, not condusive to a quiet pre-dinner drink.

Lovely setting. Very spacious and quirky room - we were in a castle state room. Lovely onsite restaurant with very accommodating staff. One member of the party was vegan which we'd notified the hotel of prior and all the staff were very attentive to their needs.

Personally, the lack of shower in the room. It was a floor standing bath with a hand held hose only. This made is quite awkward to shower in the morning. I'd stay again but would ring up to book to ensure there was an over bath shower. We also have a king size bed at home so being in a double felt cosy :-)

We visit Lumley Castle often and we find the whole experience from start to finish excellent.. The staff are wonderful and very polite... If any issues they go above and beyond to help and to make things right.. Beds are very comfortable... My only problem is that our visits go by so quickly i look forward for the next time we plan our stay... I especially love the decor, old fashioned,, dark reds and gold fabrics,, some rooms four poster beds.... Its very apt for the ghostly goings on we hear about... not forgetting Poppet..

I think i mentioned previously that I wish every room throughout the Castle and courtyard had one channel with films throughout the day and night... sometimes after our meal and drink in the bar my husband and myself like to have hot chocolate snuggled up in bed and watch a movie.... Comedy or something lighthearted to finish of our day..

The castle hotel was in the perfect location for our visit to Durham Cricket ground at the bottom of the hill. The hotel has a lot of History and you can spend 20 minutes just walking inside the castle hotel looking at all its contents , It is easy to walk to the cricket ground it will take about 10 minutes and it will save you £20 in parking fees and a long wait getting out after your event.

Our room was very cold and damp, we had to use the Electric Heater to keep warm and this was in JULY Breakfast you have to book a time slot in advance and once seated and our order was taken we then waited 40 minutes for our food to arrive. and even longer for toast that we asked for both white and brown bread but only white bread arrived The staff are all very nice people that waited on us in the Morning.

Beautiful hotel in picturesque surroundings. The food was good, but they alternate chefs. One of them cooked to extremely high standards. We stayed in a courtyard room, which was pleasant but small, dark, and dull. Plus, when we arrived, the smell of sick hit me as I opened the room door. I found a large soaking wet smelly patch on the floor. Someone had been sick all over the floor and had not cleaned up. Plus, the cleaner did not clean it either. I reported this to reception, but no joy there. Eventually, I was offered another room, but that one was ghastly. In the end, I decided to stay in the original room if it was cleaned properly. The member of staff rubbed it off with a towel, then left me with an eliminator spray. Then sent me a £3 bottle of alcohol free wine as compensation. To top it off, people woke us up at 3am banging on the walls, running up/down steps and partying..

The hotel is a piece of history and interesting to walk around. It has outstanding beauty. Our room window was cracked, and it did not lock. Safety issues. I think we were unfortunate because its a fantastic place, but for £325 for 2 nights, I would have expected more. Definitely not a 4* hotel.
