The whole stay from start to finish was exceptional. Incredibly welcoming and efficient check in process, even allowed us to check in slightly early as our room was ready. Super friendly staff, and an excellent little breakfast questionnaire so you can choose your continental breakfast, and they have it waiting on your table when you come down. The most attentive and accommodating staff serving/waiting in the breakfast room, nothing is too big of an ask, really prompt and doesn't miss a single thing, breakfast can be as huge or as small as you like, and such lovely quality food too. The room was super cosy and clean, incredible shower, lovely facilities, even a tall fan in the room, which is much appreciated in the heat of summer, TV with Netflix etc available, teas and coffees provided, even decaff! Hotel location was absolutely ideal, walkable in minutes to everything you could need on your trip, and for such a modest price too, absolutely blown away by what a fantastic stay we had. We would 100% stay here again, without hesitation. Even had the privilege of meeting the owners pup, and what a friendly and polite chap he is too! Bonus points for that! Thankyou for making my husbands birthday trip one to remember!

Literally nothing at all to dislike, everybody is catered for somehow!

Location, service, quality of food and staff was great

Unfortunately the night we stayed was stifling hot and we eventually figured out that there were wooden wedges to hold the sash windows open, there was a fan in the room but the heating was on and couldn't be turned off which led to a tough nights sleep. Having an issue with heights, there was a slight issue with access to the rooms as you go up a narrow curved and open staircase, that whilst very decorative, was quite tough to negotiate when you suffer with a heights phobia not to mention with your suitcases etc

The breakfast was superb with plenty of options. The staff were always attentive and helpful and cheery especially the breakfast staff. The quality of the breakfast food cannot be improved upon. The room was airy with plenty of light and with radiators that could be turned off. The windows could be opened to let air in and the cleaners didn't keep shutting them.

The only down side was a security light either of this hotel or adjacent property which shone into the room all night. Partially alleviated by drawing a blind but not fully. I like t-bone steaks and that wasn't on the menu and so we ate out during our stay the BITTER END public house does a good ribeye steak.

All was very good. I had a single room, normally I would have a double but it was comfortable. The staff are very good, I had a very nice evening meal and a few drinks in the restaurant. There is also a nice separate bar. Very reasonable price, for the room, meal and drinks. Very good breakfast included in the room price. I was stopping over on my way back to London from Larne Northern Ireland, so only had 1 night. I will book a double room for a few nights with my wife when we visit the Lake District.

This is an old building, but this does not detract from the quality of the hotel. There is not anything I can think of that needs changing. The location is great. The value for money is very good.

Breakfast was excellent, with a lovely cooked option too. The room was very well-appointed, with plenty of storage space, excellent shower area, and good selection of tea, coffee and biscuits. Quiet location, but the windows wouldn't open properly (sash) so it was rather stuffy. Good blackout curtains though. Mattress was a little soft for our taste, but the bedding was very warm and pillows comfy. All staff very friendly and helpful.

Mattress a little spongey. Windows didn't open.

We stayed two nights to attend a wedding nearby. Building is beautiful- old and grand but very welcoming at the same time. Lovely bar area, really well stocked and attentive staff. Had dinner there the first night and it was delicious- particular shout out to the chicken/mushroom dish which I've since tried to recreate. Rooms were clean and comfortable, nice high ceilings and plentiful toiletries.

Breakfast was a little on the slow side given it's pre-ordered the night before- it's not an in and out affair, you'll definitely want to allow 40 mins or so. Delicious though and huge portions.

A lovely old house in the centre of Cockermouth with comfy rooms and excellent food. The breakfast was huge. It was clear that great care had been taken to source high quality ingredients, and the cooked elements were skillfully handled. The bar was cosy and intimate and the cocktails were great.

The food is lovely, but the dining area was functional and seemed a little 'cold' in decor. Midweek, it is only open to residents and thus there can be fewer diners. Dressing all the tables, not just those in use would help. The window area would be a prime site for tables but this is left empty. A touch of interior design would help the room match the quality of the food. This has been successfully done in the bar which feels warm and a place for lingering and sipping delicious drinks.

The food, service and the staff were excellent. The owner couple are also the chef and the manager respectively, and they were superb. The breakfast staff was lovely. At dinner, the serving staff was fantastic. The food at dinner was marvellous, if a bit pricey. The single room with the skylight was nice.

There was nothing in the room to explain how the skylight works. They just assume that the guests know how to. A simple notice on the back of the door would be really helpful. I discovered that the skylight can be opened on the 2nd day, and that there was a blind to close the light on the 3rd day, only through trial and error. At one point, I was forced to climb onto a chair to open the skylight, as it was jammed. The other thing is that the stairs to the first floor are very tricky to climb with luggage. They are not only narrow, but also continuous, without a break. They should offer to send someone to carry the luggage up to the second floor - esp as they could see I am a senior.

We occupied a twin room which had plenty of space and en suite facilities. The bar was roomy, and the staff serving were very friendly. Prices not exorbitant as can often be the case in hotels. There was a good range of spirits and cocktails. The chef is a magician! The food was superbly cooked and there was no skimping on portions. He also makes is own bread rolls to have with dinner, and bread for toast at breakfast, which is THE best bread I have ever tasted. Dining room staff also very helpful and efficient. The hotel is perfectly located for the town, being ony a few minutes walk away, and Wordsworth's House even closer! It's also a good base for visiting both the Lakes and the North West coast. Overall, this was a gem of a hotel that I probably wouldn't have found without Booking.com. Will definitely be recommending it to family and friends

There was absolutely nothing to complain about!

The building is amazing, we loved it!. Our room was compact, clean & comfy. The Breakfast menu had a good choice range, the cooked breakfasts were 'Hearty'!. All the Staff were Hard-Working, Friendly, Helpful & Professional

The train journeys both ways were appallingly abysmal and an embarrassing indictment of the rapidly declining Railways system standards in the UK
