The location was very good for what I wanted to do. The pub was very friendly and the locals made me feel welcome from the start. The breakfast was excellent and did till evening meal time. Richard was very friendly and made me feel very welcome, nothing was too much trouble and kept an excellent pint of beer.

The wash basin in room 2 was very small in the bathroom. With a glass shelf over it. So it was very difficult to wash and rinse my face as I could not get my head in over the basin when shaving but there’s ways of doing things. The removal of the shelf to one side would make it easier. But this would not put me off going back as it was a very relaxing place.

I picked the perfect spot for my solo stay to break up my travels. Richard was the perfect host, great local pub, friendly punters. The single I room I had was perfect, super clean and modern and the bed was SO comfortable and it’s on suite bathroom was a lovely surprise, for the value I didn’t expect it’s comfortably! Richard makes a lovely breakfast using all local produce, delicious, great coffee, juices, bread for toast making and cereals in the pub’s lovely setting. Don’t book a travel lodge book here! you won’t regret it! So important to keep these rare local pubs going! Free parking at the pub, just around the corner to the town centre (where I had a decent Thai dinner) was very quite in the room - I had my window open all night! Loved the sky sports to watch with a beer or two before sleep as well and great chats with his lovely locals. Yep loved it. Thanks Richard!

Comfortable, easy going especially as I was on my own I felt safe the entire time

Had a warm welcome from Richard the proprietor, made to feel at home, it was nice to spend time in a traditional pub where the landlord and customers were really friendly. A little concerned that they did not offer evening meals but that concern was soon put to bed by Richard who recommended a Turkish restaurant literally a few minutes' walk away which was really nice and large portions. Room was clean and warm and had all required facilities, comfy bed so had a great night's sleep. Breakfast which had all local produce was brilliant. A most enjoyable and memorable stay, looking forward to returning.

Nothing at all.

Really comfortable beds. Quiet room at the back of the pub overlooking the beer garden. Excellent breakfast. The pub itself is a traditional 'locals' pub, but we were introduced to the regulars and made to feel part of the 'family'. The beer was well kept, and there was a good selection. The wine and the whisky were excellent. And although evening food was not available at the pub,, the landlord recommended a fantastic restaurant less than five minutes' walk away where we had a superb meal. There are multiple other options for food within five to ten minutes' walk.

The Dog is a proper local hostelry - friendly landlord who knows his customers - we were made very welcome. The building is old with lots of character but certainly our room was fresh and clean with tea/coffee making facilities - comfy bed nice bedding and pristine towels + toiletries. Good size shower room - modern shower with plenty of hot water. They don’t do food but Halstead has lots of restaurants - we booked Whispers Tapas round the corner which was fab! They do do Breakfast though - it was extra but well worth it - anything you wanted freshly cooked to order including local bacon and sausages. Big plus for my partner was real ale on the pump - a find and would definitely stay there again. Oh and there’s a garden + free parking 😊

Tea and coffee at breakfast was DIY - urn for hot water and as a tea drinker that just doesn’t do the trick!! But there was fresh orange juice so just a minor niggle…

The price was very reasonable and the breakfast was really good. The room itself had everything you needed, including plenty of tea/coffee and biscuits. The bar itself had some excellent real ales and Richard, the landlord, and his customers were all really friendly. We felt that if we'd stayed much longer we would have been classed as locals!!

Nothing at all.

the property was in a good location, the staff and locals where amazing! I’m a pretty anti social person, and they managed to get me singing and laughing! honestly one of the most incredible stays I have had! And I travel a lot! it’s a very British pub so it’s got that very nostalgic vibe! rooms where clean and were given hot chocolate which was so good! I will stay again and I loved it! Also helped with booking taxis! and recommend amazing local restaurants!

honestly there isn’t much I can say I dislike, the place was lovely! the only even considerable downside would be the shelf in the skink, it’s directly over and can be a bit Inconvenient to brush your teeth, but honestly that’s just nit picking! the place was perfect for me!

Just got back from a 4 day stay. Richard the Landlord was such a character & couldn’t do enough for us. The pub was just what you would expect from a village/town pub. The locals were so welcoming. My room (5) was fantastic. The double bed was so comfortable. The room was immaculate. Breakfast was fantastic. You were asked what you wanted the day before as a cooked breakfast, but croissants, cereals, filtered coffee etc were also all provided. Great location

Lovely place to stay, and will definetely stay here again.
