We had a pleasant stay. Parking was a bonus in the centre of town.

Not the hotel's fault, but Colchester's traffic system is a nightmare for a visitor. You can only get to the hotel via a restricted traffic zone from the top of the road. To do this you go through a sign that says buses and access only. We read that as deliveries, police, ambulances etc. But you can go through it!

November 2021

I stayed for one night as I was attending a friend's 50th birthday in Colchester. The greeting from the manager on arrival was warm and welcoming, and he even helped me drive into the car park (it's a *very* tight access). My room in the Stable Block was very comfortable for me, and should be good for a couple, although it was not that big. The Stable Block has some low roof points, so tall people will need to mind their heads at times. The shower room was a little small, but it was clean and the shower had great water pressure. The room was quiet and warm (in November) and the Full English breakfast hit the spot in the morning. The hotel is located 100 yards from the High St, so easy to walk into town. The car park is gated at night and so very secure. Overall, the hotel was just what I needed for my stay.

The only negative was somewhat self-inflicted. The hotel car park is accessed via an old gated archway under the hotel. I drive a Range Rover, and the width of my car meant that even with the wing mirrors folded in there was about 5-10mm of space on either side of the car going through the gate. Even with help, I got it wrong on the way out and scratched my car a little (although the scratches have now all gone after some hard work with T-cut). Most normal cars would have less trouble getting through the arch, but if you drive a large SUV be warned that it is incredibly tight. After checking in, I discovered there is a large multi-story car park just behind the hotel, which would probably be the better option if your car is large.

The spanish host in Danny (Daniel) made us feel at home from the outset, guiding us through the narrow entrance to the hotel, and explaining all the specific room and overall facilities available to us, even his own personal long serving history in the UK was very engaging. Nothing was too much trouble, and he kindly extended the use of the car park whilst we had a meal at a nearby restaurant after check out. He was a credit to the city and hotel accommodation business in general. The location was perfect for all our nearby shopping, eating and social drinking needs with our accompanying friends. A definite consideration on any next visit. Highly recommended.

Although only continental breakfast was available, there was a considerable choice of cereals, fruit, teas, juices, toast, croissants, preserves and more so plentiful and satisfying all our needs to start each day of our stay.

Although only continental breakfast was available (no chefs employed due to post Covid none being available), the choice was wide and Dan made scrambled egg for me! Dan and his staff were extremely friendly and helpful.

My room was upstairs in the stable block - very comfortable and quiet but access was by the stairs which, although not too many, are steep and with small treads. There is no lift or air conditioning in the stable, BUT, this is a very old listed building, full of character, so modernisation is not possible. Dan will help to carry luggage up the stairs so no real access problem.

Pleasant manager , all the team very friendly from Sophie , to the night manager , and bar staff, made to feel welcome . We were in rm 1 which is queen premium en-suite with shower , absolutely lovely , it has a wet room , newly decorated, attention to detail , and everything you could need . The patio area out the back lovely , nice to relax out there with a drink or coffee . Well breakfast continental , but I have to say what an amazing spread , they can even do you scrambled eggs via a machine and Sophie does it for you . We will be back sometime definitely.

Absolutely nothing —- only parking is by travelling up a narrow passage at side of hotel , plenty of parking when get up there , we have a Toyota auris and it was fine , a larger car I am not too sure ? But on saying that there is a car park about two doors down pay and display .

Greeted with a very pleasant welcome, Daniel was most attentive and thorough with his introduction to the hotel and our room. The room was small and compact but delightfull and well presented. Also well situated outside the main building close to where we parked, making it easy to transport our luggage. Beautiful decor throughout, interesting old building with plenty to look at in the breakfast room. Breakfast was contintal but plentiful. In fact the biggest selection of breakfast items I have ever seen in a continental offering and presented to perfection. We were made to feel very welcome and comfortable. The pillows were especially comfty and we were permitted to leave the car in the car park before check in time and past check out time, enabling us to visit the wonderful Colchester Castle on the sunday.

could have done with a light above the sink to see better in the mirror. Very compact which was fine but not much room to put or empty out our luggage. Maybe instead of a safe, an exra shelf for laying things out?

This was a lovely hotel that was right in the heart of Colchester! Near to shops, railway stations and bus stops!! The room we had was a good size as was the lovely bathroom with a big ensuite shower!! All the staff were polite and friendly and we appreciated the upgrade we were lucky to get! There was plenty of choice for the continental breakfast and there is also a restaurant here and you can have high tea!! If you want a place that's near to everything including the Castle which is well worth visiting this is the hotel to stay in!!

There wasn't anything we didn't like about this place!! Nothing was to much trouble for the staff!

The hotel is in great location very close to high street. The staff were very accommodating as I arrived couple hours earlier than their stipulated check in time but as my room room was ready was allowed to drop of my bags. There is no cooked breakfast (which did not bother me) but there is a very good continental breakfast selection (and nice large cup of coffee). The room itself was very comfortable and had the basics you would expect. e.g en-suite bathroom, tea/ coffee making facilities, free WiFi and TV. There is also a small car park at the back.

Did not find anything to complain about.

While not a hot breakfast, the "continental" spread was amazing - large variety of cereals, breads, cheeses, cold meats, fresh fruit, jams that were constantly being replenished. Excellent hosts - both Danny the GM, and his assistant a tall gentleman with grey hair whose name I did not get. Looked after me very well! Would definitely go back.

Nothing - except that I would have liked if they had had a coffee machine rather than serving instant coffee and if they had given a choice of cream or milk rather than just serving milk.

Comprehensive instructions on location and approach to the hotel were much appreciated. We were shown to our room, which was beautifully appointed and the bed was very comfortable. there were plenty of complimentary drinks and toiletries. The towels were soft and large, the wet room shower was good and the courtyard quiet. Staff were very polite and friendly and we will definately be staying again.

The kettle was too tall to fit under the basin tap, however we were able to fill it from the bottle of complimentary drinking water. It would have been useful to have a hook in the shower room.
