This hotel is a piece of art. The hotel is very old and has a great atmosphere. It shows an old English style on the inside which I love. The rooms are good size and beds are comfortable. Though in warm periods the rooms can get a bit hot. The breakfast is good. Full English as expected. And the staff is very nice and show interest in your stay. First thing asked by the reception desk was what brought us to colchester. Which was a nice touch. I’ve been to other hotels where they just check you in and have no further interest. We also had dinner in the hotel and this was fine as well. Though not all items were in stock at that moment. But this could have been a temporary thing at that moment. The location is great. It's in the middle of the center with a lot of things to see and do. And good food options nearby. I would stay here again if I were to visit Colchester again.

Rooms can get a bit hot in summer. But it’s an old hotel. It’s to be expected. Parking is unavailable at the location so it’s a small 5 minute walk to the nearest car park. Because it’s in the center of the main city area. But this is a small predicament.

Extraordinary historic building, medieval - Elizabethan beamed room, 4 poster bed. Breakfast in a similarly sumptuous Elizabethan room. I personally was very happy in the 'faded glory' but renovating the hangings and a proper hostess tray would have been welcome. However, the room was a privilege to stay in and half the price of what it would have been if it had been 'done up'.

Well, the building and hangings haven't really been attended to since Queen Elizabeth! And scaffolding holds up the central light well. Could do with a new TV and proper hostess tray.

A privilege to be able to stay in this 500 year old building in this historic town. Impressive period features worth stopping to look at. The furniture in the rooms blends well with the "old style", whilst the bathroom, TV etc are suitably modern and smart. I could not hear any noise from neighbouring rooms. The dining room is impressive with its period features, though I did not eat there. Friendly, efficient 24 hour reception. An excellent location in the centre of town, in the Red Lion Walk precinct of boutique and independent craft and food shops. Easy to walk to the two train stations, Castle museum, shops and leisure facilities.

The mattress on the bed could have been better. It can be a little noisy outside with the bars and restaurants, but you either embrace this as part of the charm of being in the city centre or stay outside of the city. The floorboards creak! - but it is an old building.

Angela is fantastic . Runs a lovely hotel . Plenty of character in the building and the resident ghosts . Alice. The monk and the little boy and girl make it very interesting indeed . There are more ghosts than just the 3 ive mentioned . You really cant go wrong if you stayed here friendly manager and excellent. Breakfast .Look no further if staying in Colchester .

Had to complain about people making noise at 1am .Tv on loud .But to be fair went down and told ngt security and was sorted instantly .This is one reason like staying any problems get sorted instantly .

I liked the location, the people working their are super nice, as well as the building and the old style. I liked the style of the hotel from the building itself to the furniture but you will like only if you like traditional old styles. I don't recommend it to someone who like fancy super stars hotel. not because it is not nice but because they will put bad reviews because it won't meet their expectations

The only thing that i didn't check if there is a lift or not. I had heavy bags and this concerned me but the workers their always willoffer help

Staff couldn't have been more friendlier or willing to help - the best staff of any hotel I've ever stayed in. Hotel was an amazing beautiful & historic tudor building (complete with ghosts too} Meal was delicious & homemade again in atmospheric surroundings. Bed was very comfortable. Location was right in the city centre.

wi-fi wasn't great in the room but staff went out of their way to find a better location for zoom meeting in the hotel.

Really personable staff, clean and comfortable, nice atmosphere, great location. Overall would recommend.

Shower was either boiling hot or freezing, and the water didn't drain properly for ages. The heating was turned up exceptionally high, and there was almost no noise reduction from the window to the street below, which was disruptive as the location was so central. Didn't bother me too much, but people who are lighter sleepers probably wouldn't get a restful sleep.

The main building is beautiful, really lovely and decorated in excellent Tudor antique style.

The rooms were very basic compared to the rest of the building. The shower was from the 90s and had temperamental heat controls and rubbish water pressure. The remote control was very hard to use for the TV, had to press multiple times to get anything to happen and often the buttons would get stuck.

Stunning hotel with lots of history. The location was in the high street so had a good choice of shops, bars and restaurants. The staff were really friendly and helpful. Lovely spacious room with character to match the theme of the hotel. We also enjoyed a delicious breakfast in the morning. We have stayed at lots of older hotels and have to say how impressed we were with The Brook Red Lion. I would highly recommend and we will most certainly be back in the future.
